Best ships for dancing

Crystal makes every effort to bring back the good old days of big band music and dancing. Just remember you must know the music of glen miller and the great tommy Dorsey band. we mad two crossing this year with the tommy Dorsey band. But you have to be of the age when you danced or listened to them both. Crystal has them both. only on crossings they play 3 times a night.

The outfits the ladies wear are over the top. In my opinion Crystal pricing is a lit much but you get everything no extras. The other thing is on crossing they have the best speakers. I am not in sails at all but we have cruised with crystal 30+ times.

We're not shy about getting up and dancing, Latin, Swing, International, American Social or Argentine Tango. We love it all. Have done 15 cruises on about six different lines. But not yet on Crystal.

One thing we've learned is to look for dance venues in the pre-cruise embarkation ports.... FLL, Miami, Vancouver, Venice or San Juan PR.

And top port for a few nights of wild Salsa and Merengue is the big casino hotels along the Condado and Isla Verde beaches of San Juan.

Basically all the ships, be they Royal Caribbean, Princess, HAL or whatever, have a small combo playing somewhere on the ship. So while half the passengers are at early seating dinner or at their cocktail parties, find the near empty lounge with the music.... tip extravagantly... and the floor is yours!

Began reading this thread to ascertain alternative ships for Ballroom dancing. We have sailed Cunard, Celebrity and HAL but each for different purposes, not just dancing. Our first choice for dancing is obviously Cunard but we'd like to find other lines that are suitable. Our home port is Southampton and we are not interested in 'hideous' large sized ships. Any more up to date information would be very welcome.

My travel agent has been on a couple of HAL's refurbished ships in the last year, he says I would not like them, they are completely unsuitable for dancing and he will no longer book dance groups on board.

Although I didn't like P&O Oriana, the music and dance floor were good, it might be fine for you.

I have sailed with Jazzdagen on several HAL ships recently and will soon be back on the Zuiderdam after a hiatus of 18 years, so will make a report. My recommendation is to be creative and have fun with fitting your ballroom dancing into a constrained and crowded space. You can't necessarily keep those elbows out, but it is a fun challenge to see how fast you can weave around the others and with what agility you can make unexpected changes of direction. You will get a lot of positive attention: I've been asked numerous times if I was a ballerina, or if my partner and I were the dance teachers on board, or if we were dance teachers in general. Just take a pair of old slick-soled dance shoes for sticky floors and newer dance shoes for the polished floors, preferably low-heeled or flat, for safety reasons when the seas are high. Each year there are more good dancers out on the ships' floors. 25 years ago we were often the only ballroom or hustle dancing couple.

"Constrained and crowded"- full marks for honesty, but why would any rational person pay money expecting such a miserable experience?

The Wikipedia entry for jazz is pure gobbledygook, but sounds like tempo varies wildly- another miserable experience.
