So someone who has 15 drinks in a day while on vacation is automatically an alcoholic?

Myopic much? Just sayin ...

15 x 7 = 105 drinks. Hard to do unless one is used to consuming so much. There is a river called de Nile.

We look at it this way... It's a cost certainty thing for us. It takes 6 drinks a day to break even because we also have multiple lattes in the morning and after dinner. We will lose money on some port days but make it up on sea days. So at the end we usually break even or slightly ahead. But knowing when we leave that it's all paid for is a fantastic way for us to budget and just enjoy the cruise.

And as Florida said it affords us the option of trying new things and if we don't like it..pour it out and try another. No $ lost.

Sure it will but the passengers need something for them selves so they know just how much is left remaining.

Wouldn't want to leave any on the table at the end of the night, would you?

So...do you just play devil's advocate, or are you really as cynical as your responses on these threads would have me believe?

I don't care about alcohol consumption on a ship, from my most recent experience on the Regal we need to limit the number of trips one can make to the buffet line. I was astounded by sheer size and scope of the issue.

Now don’t give Princess any ideas the next thing we know is between 6 am and 6pm you are only allowed 3 plates from the buffet.

I get the limit of 15. But why can't it be shared. If i am allowed 15 drinks then why can't I share it with my hubby who will drink only a few?

NO SHARING!!! It doesn't work that way. Plus you don't NEED to drink 15 per day to get your money's worth.

They are in business to make money and count on people getting the package to not drink enough. Thats why they offer it.

They are not looking to help you out financially on drinks. If you're not a big drinker, its not worth it and you should pay as you go.

No one will develop an alcoholic disorder in a week on vacation. Many people drink more on vacation than they do in their daily lives. It takes a pattern of behavior (occurring over months) to develop a disorder. I’ve never come close to 15 drinks in a day myself, but no need to call someone an alcoholic for doing it once or twice a year on vacation.

If you carefully read my post, I did not call anyone an alcoholic....but simply quoted a government report (and included the link).

I believe everyone's bad reactions in this thread were over misinterpreting lolane's attempt at humor. She has since stated this and I for one am accepting this and dropping it.

Sarcasm and/or dry humor can be missed in the written form. The use of emoticons helps readers see this and reduces occurrences like this.

For my part I apologise for my reactions and wish you all happy cruising.

So, someone help me, because I did get a C in Calculus 3 about twenty years ago, but how is $4.60 per alcoholic beverage a rip off?

I think most folks would be hard pressed to put down 15 in a day, not impossible, but that is a big day of drinking. However, what kind of cruising experience would you have if you did that everyday for a seven night cruise?

I get that nobody likes terms being changed on them, but seriously the limit imposed is at the upper limit of what anyone could claim is responsible alcohol consumption.

Thats $4.60 a drink, "if", you have 15 drinks a day. Now, anything less than 15 drinks a day, your $4.60 goes up. Again, who the heck has 15 drinks a day for 7, 10, or 14 days in a row ???? If your one who does, theres a private club just for you, its called AA....lol lol lol

We just got off the Caribbean Princess and we had the "drink package" as a amenity on our booking. In other words we did not pay separate for it.

We would never buy it since we don't drink a lot on vacation. I did like the idea that I could try different drinks but when it came down to it, I very seldom had more than 1-2 alcoholic dinks a day and maybe 1 coffee and possibly 2 soft drinks.

My complaint came when we were on the Princess private island and asked for something "non-alcoholic" and they brought us "cans" butttttt then they added the charge for cans on our room charges. It seems that canned soda is no longer a part of the AIBP only fountain drinks. But, they do not have a fountain on the island! When I told passenger services to take the charge off, the girl said, "Oh, we didn't think of that problem!" They did take the charge off.

It was very confusing even on board. Sometimes the waiter asked for our card and took it to the bar with him/her. Other times they just looked at it and brought us our drinks. Also, they did not have an acceptable fountain drink for my husband who must have "diet" and it must be "clear" not any type of Cola, for medical purposes. In the past he would get Sprit Zero but that is only in cans not a fountain drink.

15 "drinks" over 15 hours?? - Bottled water, Specialty coffees, sodas, mocktails - not included in the 15 day drink limit.

and it all depends on how port intensive the cruise is, of course - and the length - we take mostly 4-5 day cruises lately...

And that lowers the price even more !

It's a bargain. ;);):D

It isn't a horrible deal if you do drink ... and just remember this:

The reason for purchasing the beverage package is exactly the same reason why we hired the captain to steer the ship. We always take turns on who is the designated driver while at home ... on a cruise ... we've nominated the captain to be the designated driver. Cheers!!

If the cost of what you drink is $10, you would only need to have an average of seven drinks per day to make the plan worth purchasing.

If the drink is $12 plus 15% gratuity = $13.80. After five drinks per day you would be even. I never buy the plan, book cruises where its a perk.

Have used the AIBP a couple times. My thoughts: Not real keen on the 15 alcoholic drink limit but after experiencing Cheers and their limit on a Carnival ship, I can live with it, it's sufficient. Absolutely hate removing canned sodas from the package. Heck even Carnival had these included.

There's no need for punch cards. The current system is fine, plus it gives the bartenders liberty to overlook the limit here or there (or enforce it early if necessary).

With the Cheers package, I'm sure there were times we went over the 15 limit but we were never drunk or unruly (Plus we were in the casino spending money).

Hopefully the new system on Princess is as well oiled as the Cheers program. We'll see first hand in January with a complementary Sip & Sail Premier Beverage Package. Just wish they didn't cut out the canned sodas,

I think that there should be some sort of Casino exemption. If you are in the Casino gambling and you have the beverage plan then your alcoholic drinks shouldn't be counted towards the 15.

Any drinks bought for you by the casino would not count because it is not rung up on your card. Also buying bottles of wine with the 25% discount do not count as well.

Mike, on Princess you can buy the drink package and your wife does not have to. :)

It's a good thing. Sometimes, one person doesn't drink at all for various reasons (pregnant being one of them) ... or very little.

Excellent! The wife doesn't drink very much...

The 15 drink limit will do what it was intended to do... eliminate sharing.

I don't agree with the price hike but we never buy the AIBP with Princess anyhow. We simply take advantage of the wine we bring on board, the BOGO deals and having a few drinks in port. We don't drink coffee or much soda so the perks aren't there for us. We order the cases of water to the room and I'll drink whatever iced tea or lemonade offered in the buffet if I'm looking for something with flavor.

Now with that being said, we do get the package on RC ships because it is easy to make it worth while.... 5 - 6 drinks/day and its paid for. Bloodymary in the A.M., frozen drink by the pool, 2-3 beers while wondering around the ship, glass or two of wine at dinner and a mixed drink in the club, that's 8 drinks over 12-15 hours. We don't bring wine and no BOGO that I know of.

I agree. In fact, they reward play with free drinks but you technically already get them "free" with AIBP so what's the incentive. Something they didn't think about. Mentioned that to the Carnival host and he gave us a free steak dinner. So always talk to the host if you think you've earned something.
