Feb 15 is a Friday. What time is your flight?

NYC taxi fares to Newark Airport can be unpredictable because it's an interstate trip and is metered. You pay the meter, a $17.50 surcharge, plus round trip tolls ($19.30-22.20) and tip. Booking a car service like Dial7 or Carmellimo is generally recommended to get a fixed base rate quote plus tolls and tip. Folks also use Uber and Lyft.

Frequent NCL sailing in/out of NY as it is our homeport, looking at the Gem, it's at the end of a long 19 days Panama repo, 3 full days at sea prior to with a 10 am scheduled arrival. Please, do NOT book weekday airline flights (whether it's out of EWR or JFK, etc.) as disembarkation can be delayed & randomly unpredictable, allow plenty of extra time in getting to the airport ... even if you are planning to do the Express Self Walkoff and/or getting escorted Priority Disembark with all your own luggage & belongings.

Most definitely, best to use a car service, as 138east/Carol & others like ourselves do ... price the confirmed quotes from Dial 7 and Carmel as you get closer to the sailing, currently, I show a standard/deluxe/luxury 4 door sedan rate of under $60 for the base fare (for next Feb.) plus toll & tips - no surcharges (unlike NYC's Yellow Taxi, which will be on a metered fare rate + surcharge + round-trip tolls + tips) ...

For domestic US flights, cruiseline now recommend booking airline departure 5 hours after ship's scheduled arrival ... even for the mid-sized ship like the Gem, it can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes, sometimes 2 hours to actually get off the ship (all the way past CBP) and outside, ready for ground transfer by car service or being picked up. The ride to EWR on a typical weekday late morning/noon-time is somewhere between 45 to 90 minutes, if "everything" is routine & weather permitting (it's mid-Winter in NYC)

If the Gem arrived earlier than scheduled and disembarkation is a breeze, then ... excellent & great, you don't need to be in a hurry to leave the ship, enjoy a full & hot breakfast, complimentary of NCL, in the MDR - then take your time rush & run for the long lines ... Feb. can be brutally cold in NYC to stand outside on the cruise terminal - lines as long as 1/8 mile + along with entire length, to get inside & downstairs.

We used, nowadays, Carmel most of the time as we also get a little bonus airline miles credited and it has its own mobile App, much like Uber & Lyft, with real-time GPS update on the vehicle/driver once assigned & dispatched for the pickup.

For simplicity, as it can sometimes be a traffic nightmare waiting 15 to 20+ minutes for the car service/driver to fight her/his way to get into the cruise terminal area to pick you up. We exit the cruise terminal building, which is right at W. 48th Street & 12th Avenue (pedestrian walkways) on the southbound side - wait & cross the traffic light at W. 48th Street and wait about mid-city block on W. 48th Street for the driver/car service to come up the one-way street.

There is a yellow taxi stand on the corner of W. 48 & 12th Avenue, big crowd there and lines on ship days - we move away from that area.

Heading to EWR, the driver picked you up & down 1/2 a city block, make a right to go south on 11th Avenue for about 10 or 12 city blocks and take one of the less congested "back" entrance into the midtown Lincoln Tunnel to head out to NJ, for the airport via Rt. 3 to the Turnpike. If there are last minutes "traffic" surprises, the driver will usually opt for a different routing, as they said, they aren't happy themselves sitting in gridlocks with upset/anxious riders worried about missing their check-in cutoffs, not good for earning a nice tip.

Do come back here 4 to 6 weeks before you sail for Panama to see if there are any "winter" alerts for NYC and EWR airports, etc. Of course, checkout Flyertalk's destination forum on flight related matters.

We took the shuttle to and from EWR, stopped at port authority which is very close to the Manhattan cruise terminal. Was very efficient and affordable.

thank you all for replies. We are not comfortable taking anything but most direct to airport. At this point in life, willing to pay $$ for easy peasy to get off Ship and to Airport.!! Have looked at NCL transfer from Ship to EWR, but did this once before, another cruse and it was a not good experience. So will keep all your suggestions, thank you, into consideration. Just wanted to know the possibility of getting a taxi after getting off Ship to EWR.

Know costly but in case wanted to now if doable.
