Radiance of the Seas Alaska Northbound, May 18, 2018

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am just checking in right now. The internet is very slow as we sail through the inside passage. Once it gets better, I can start answering some of the questions that have been asked.

The MDR menus are the new ones. I have taken photos and am collecting the Compasses.

What is the best way to post photos?

Jennifer

Jennifer

The easiest way to post photos is to use a smartphone app like Tapatalk.

Otherwise upload the photos to a photo sharing site like FlickR and post links to the photos in your CC posts.

Started to worry that either the internet was that bad or you were having too much fun to post. [emoji4] Looking forward to everything else you have to share!

The internet is still not great even after getting past the inside passage.

We are in Ketchikan today. The weather is cool and it started raining around 1:00. We chose not to do an excursion today, so walked around the town and had a good lunch at Bar Harbor.

First formal night was last night (day 2). My observation is that more people dress for formal night than our other cruises. Most aren’t super dressy, but there were very few in jeans, t-shirts or casual clothes. We always dress up and this was the first time the guys did not wear a tie, but did wear pants and a blazer.

Cruise director is Ken Jones for those wanting to know.

We are going to Samba Grill tonight.

Thank you for the updates. Curious to hear your thoughts on Samba Grill. That is one of the specialty restaurants we have not been to before. Thinking of trying it.

Not everyone in our family is Diamond, so we have only been to the CL, but I will try to stop in there one evening when we get a chance.

No worries, thanks. Just curious if it's crowded or any more casual than in the Caribbean as I've read. Don't go out of your way though if it's a hassle. I know from speaking to the DL staff in the past that the crowds can vary greatly from one week to the next.

Thanks for the dinner menus. Can you also ask if they are offering a Pie of the Day... I know Indie, Navigator and Symphony are but that may be geared towards the Europeans

Just noted spag Bol twice in 3 days!

We also have Samba booked so interested in your thoughts!

Thanks again

Samba Grill was very good. In addition to a small salad bar they bring out a few side dishes. They then serve seven types of meat. The dessert was also good. My one recommendation would be to not eat several hours before going. It is a lot of food!

We had Ken Jones last summer on our Baltic Cruise and really liked him. He and Chris Hopkins were hilarious together. Sometimes in the past we have been very annoyed by the cruise director so good to see Ken is at least for now the CD.

A few answers to some of the questions. I am still working on the others.

There is a corkage fee of $15 for wine brought on board.

It is day 4 and so far there has not been a 10 Drink Card special.

I have not seen anything about a Pie of the Day.

Casino Royale info was in stateroom on first day for all Crown and Anchor members. Hubby is Prime, but everyone else is Choice. They are getting to be sticklers in casino about rules. One example, if both dice do not hit the wall in Craps there is no first warning, they immediately call it a no throw. I can imagine what will happen if someone hits their point and a lot of money is on the table and that happens.

I am happy to answer any questions or try to find the answer.

When I get home I will write up a report and provide a link to all Compasses, menus, etc. I have been trying to remember to get the kids and teen compasses, but did miss day one.

Today we are at Icy Strait Point. Most of the group went halibut fishing. It is chilly with on and off light rain. We did see three whales and a sea lion as we were approaching the pier and there are a lot of eagles.

Tomorrow we are in Juneau and since there are seven of us we are doing a private Canoe paddle and Mendenhall Glacier Trek. We did this last year and loved it. It is the same company as the ship excursion, but not with a group.

Thanks for posting the dinner menus. I feel as though I am gaining weight from just reading them! Have you tried the pizza on the ship yet? I think I heard from someone who was on another RC cruise that the pizza was good. And how about a hamburger bar? Do they have one onboard, and, if so, how is it?

Thanks again for taking the time to provide us with all this valuable information.

Not trying to speak for the OP but figured I could answer some stuff until she can.

Most people have a very negative opinion of the RCI pizza. Personally, I have found times when it was terrible but on the whole I have no issue with it. There's a long thread with lots of strong opinions if you're interested... https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2610575

No, there is not a burger bar. They have burgers in the Windjammer buffet but they are not very good (the patties are cooked and thrown into a metal pan, like most buffet food). I like to eat a lot and I'm not picky but I rarely eat burgers on cruises. They're edible unless you're picky, but there are too many better options IMO... random buffet items, Park Cafe inside the Solarium with the famous roast beef sandwich (Kummelweck) along with made-to-order salads, paninis, and other snacks, and the "Dog House" with several different types of hot dogs). Those are your main options for free casual food. Naturally there is also the MDR and the specialty restaurants.

Hope this helps.
