When they will learn that We are on a vacation and most people don't have the free bag in the major airlines, no space for the penguin dress

Never had problems packing my dinner suit when flying to New York to cruise with Cunard or flying to the Caribbean to cruise with P&O. If there is the will there is a way.

The vast majority of my cruises and crossings with Cunard have involved flying in at least one direction... to or from the ship, and sometimes in both directions.

Despite being on holiday/vacation, I have always packed my dinner suit (and accessories),

Sometimes I take one case, sometimes two (either because of the airlines free allowance, or I've paid a very small supplement).

Therefore, for this traveller, taking a formal suit for evening dining has never (ie not even once) been an issue.

Happy sailings.

Because it’s Classy and even in this day and age people don’t want to look like slobs/tramps even when on Holiday!!

Airline luggage weight limits when flying can be a problem. Thesuitcases themselves contribute to the weight. We purchased light weight butrobust suitcases which has allowed us to pack everything required for ourcruises, (including formal and informal dress).

Yet on other lines I've read of people wanting to bring elaborate door decorations, fans, and even hammocks. All of which take up more room in a bag than "penguin dress". (BTW black tie is the most ingenious ensemble ever designed for men. All men, regardless of age or physical build, look great wearing it.)

I love people that will pay thousands on a vacation and balk at a $50 luggage fee.

A bit like the mad scramble to save a fiver on a bottle of spirits when you've spent best part of £10K (0.005%),

However, I just received the following email:

Thank you for youremail. I apologise for the delay in our response.

Please be assured, although we have changed thewording of our dress code, the requirements under our attire guidelines havenot changed.

We have refreshed the guidelines to allow better definition of the dress codefor our daytime and evening attire, including which venues are available forthe more relaxed attire.

Formal attire has been renamed as 'GalaEvenings' and Informal attire has been renamed as 'Smart Attire'.

Relaxed attire is not something we have newlyintroduced, we have always had casual venues and casual daytime attire, we havejust changed the lanuage used to make it easy for all our guests to understand.

Kind regards

The standard corporate reply.

The final straw to relocate was on asking Cunard to answer this question with a simple YES or a NO.

Question:

Pursuant to your new wording, will swim-ware without any type of coverup, be allowed in all public areas of the ship?

Back came the same corporate reply.

Draw your conclusions.

Dumbdown day of 11 June now appears confirmed.

From Cunard's PR department:

"We haven't made any changes to the day dress code in any way so it will be exactly the same as before. The only changes that we have made are to the Pub and Casino where we have relaxed the attire based on guests feedback and how they have told us they like to dress in these types of areas - as they are in very close proximity to each other on both the QV and QE it has also made a lot of sense. All other areas remain the same as before, we've just changed the descriptions."

I must admit this does make sense. On QV we wanted to watch the NFL game in the Golden Lion pub, but it was on a formal night. The atmosphere was totally ruined and the American style buffet looked completely out of place. There are plenty of places on board to dress up. The Golden Lion is the ideal place for relaxed attire. Also one afternoon a number of us wanted a leisurely drink and chat in the Golden Lion. What happened ? They had BINGO!! We couldn't chat, so left. Bingo should be held in another venue. With a little bit of thought, most tastes can be catered for.

Indeed, and men have the advantage of being able to wear the same outfit every formal night. A second shirt is handy but, with the laundrettes and laundry service, not essential.

Finally... someone says what we men all knew all along... guys must have invented the whole "Dress for Dinner" thing from the get-go since, as David points out, it's like a uniform for men and the easiest possible "rig" to pack and wear. I never understood why men at least seem to be ones most resistant about it. It's like a school uniform for grown ups.

And yes, it's amusing how folks spend thousands on a Cunard cruise and then get wallet angst over one excess bag fee or drink in their cabin on Tesco sparkling wine rather than drink in the bars. The cheapest cruise is always, always the one you don't go on at all.

It's the same half story we've all been getting ....

I agree Hattie, regardless of whether or not the 'changes' bother or don't bother us as individuals it is difficult to deny that Cunard has made definition changes and casual location & clothing (jeans) changes.

Cunard has not been transparent and has not advised anyone, agent or passenger, in advance of the 'changes'. As a loyal Diamond World Club passenger with x4 more cruises booked with them I am insulted and very suspicious of the actual motive for the changes.

Cunard PR/Guest Relations team clearly told me by 'phone "Cunard are improving the 'White Star Training Programme' and will be ensuring that ALL relevant ship board crew are empowered and required to ensure that the dress code is adhered to by all passengers", BUT I AM NOT CONVINCED, AND LOOK ON WITH A GREAT DEAL OF INTEREST.

I do not want to pre judge or ruin our next four Cunard Cruises before we sail but should the dress code standards go further South, "right down the Head", then we will be cruising with another line after 2019. BUT I DONT THINK CUNARD CARES.

For the record, Cunard confirm they have trained people to ensure the the new dress code, as from 11 June, is enforced.

The new code is

During the day, feel free to relax and dress as you please in all areas of the ship.

So Cunard staff are to enforce the "anything goes" dress code?

Well, that's excellent news. Isn't it?

And yet Cunard's website now says that jeans are appropriate for the Yacht Club and G-32. This was not the case before.
