Question About Personal Item On A Qantas Flight

I know I could ask this on the cruise air board but I think I will get more input on this board since many of you fly Qantas.

We will be flying Qantas business class from New Zealand to Australia.

The Qantas website is very clear on the size of the carry on you can bring on board in Business Class showing the dimensions and giving you multiple options.

It is not so clear on the size of the personal item you may take. I have two different back packs and will take one as a person item but it just says a small item. Is there somewhere where they clearly note the size of the personal item as many airlines do.

Any help would be appreciated.

I realize I can call them but just thought I would try here first.

Thank you.

Keith

As it says:

In addition to your carry-on baggage allowance, you may also carry onboard one small personal item such as a handbag, laptop computer*, overcoat, small camera, a reasonable amount of reading material or a small amount of duty free goods (where permitted).

A backpack would be considered your main carry on item - not a small personal item.

As you are on business class international - your allowance is

2 x 105cm bags

= 48cm + 34cm + 23cm

of 7 kilos per piece.

So you are already permitted two sizeable and weighty bags !!

Thanks I plan to go with the one carry on that meets this requirement:

22in + 14in + 9in

I have a relatively small backpack that holds a laptap computer and a few other items which is what I was considering. I'll try to dig out the dimensions on that one.

101,000 posts on here and you have no idea about air travel? Your backpack will be perfectly fine regardless of what it weighs. Happy travels.

There is a saying that "you are never too old to learn". :p

Yes, while I know a lot about air travel this is my first time on Qantas. ;p

Most airlines do show the dimensions on a personal item.

I am asking more about the dimensions then the weight of the personal item.

I will post a photo of it later today and also the dimensions just to get opinions.

Thank you OSKiwiJJ and GUT2407.

Here is the photo of the backpack.

The dimensions are:

20" height by 14" wide and only 3 & 1/2" depth.

Any additional thoughts are appreciated.

If necessary I will place the computer in my carry on but would be nice to take this bag too.

Fits easily under a seat.

Keith, With Business Class on Qantas you are entitled to two carry ons. Do you have two carry ons plus this small backpack? If you only have one carry on, plus this backpack, you will be within your carry on entitlement.

I usually end up with an extra collapsible bag of newspapers and magazines (it is a long flight), on top of my two carry ons, and it has never been a problem.

You should be OK, Keith. Some women tote handbags that are bigger than a small backpack. :D

No kidding...some women tote “handbags” that are bigger than a small child, never mind a small backpack :'):'):')
