Well, I've found lots of free animated gifs, and can download them to my computer. Can you explain a URL ... is that my web address? My email address? Not being a techie, I'm still a little lost on getting my avatar going. icon_eek.gif

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator - a fancy way of saying webpage address. It's what's at the address field at the top of your web browser right now.

Just right click on any avatar on any website and click on "Properties". You can see the URL of the image. Cut and paste it into the custom avatar field in your profiles. BTW, feel free to steal my Hokie avatar. icon_biggrin.gif Good luck.

If you chose an avatar off the web -- One thing to keep in mind is that every time someone opens a page that contains your avatar, it will cause a hit to the website which stores the image. You might want to be cautious about choosing an avatar off the web. I used to have some sports-related pics on one of my websites, until a few people started using them as avatars. It caused as many as 10,000 hits a day to my website, so I quickly deleted the pics.

Good point. Linking to a free icon site or at least a website owned by a company that expects large traffic will be better. Also, there is less chance that the link will change as with smaller web servers. Remember that the longer it takes to retrieve your avatar, the longer it'll take you and everyone else to bring up the threads with your posts on it.

Also remember that when you change your avatar it changes in all of your posts. For a while several of us were playing the "Lets be Newt for a day" game and setting all of our avatars to his.

Luckily sanity prevailed and we all went back to our usual ones.

High Seas gal. The avatar is supposed to be 48x48 pixels in dimension. So when you are looking for an avatar, you need to find one on a site that allows you to reduce the dimension to what you need or find one that is already the right size or smaller. I am sorry but I do not know how to reduce the size of an avatar once I have downloaded it so I picked one that was already the right dimension.

If you right mouse click on any of our avatars and click on properties you will see the size is 48x48 pixels. Likewise when looking for an avatar, right mouse click check properties to find the dimensions.

Someone correct me if I am wrong about this and give highseasgal a hand with the resizing.

Alright. I give up! I've gone to one of the CC standard avatars, much to my disappointment. I've tried several animated sites, and even had a working avatar for some hours before it left me. So, here you have the moon and space. A little tribute to the days when, as a youngster, I wanted to be an astronaut! icon_rolleyes.gif

It doesn't have to be exatcly 48x48 pixels. The program will reduce it for you. You get a chance to preview the avatar to see if you like it. They are fun to play around with.
