Smoking on a balcony I have questions and need answers!!!

Hello all cruise critic members my fiancé and I will be sailing on the freedom on nov 10 for our honeymoon. This will be her first cruise and my fifth but it will be my first time having a balcony. We are both smokers(I know horrible habit please no lecturing on that) not heavy ones but we do smoke. I know carnival allows smoking on all balconies, but how much would our smoking on the balcony affect others around us? We probably wouldn't be out smoking every 5 minutes may only be out a couple times a day. Some nights when we have been drinking it may be more often then that later at night. I would like to be able to enjoy my balcony and smoke on it but also would hate knowing I am ruining my neighbors cruise with smoke blowing into the balcony. We are on deck 7 midship. Any suggestions are appreciated as well as past experiences.

As a smoker myself, I smoke on my balcony. I do try to be mindful of others and often I am not out when others may be. Policy says you can smoke on your balcony, so no need to worry be too apprehensive.

Thank you for the comment. If I may ask another question do they give you ashtrays on the balcony? Or should I bring my own

The militant non-smokers claim they can catch a whiff of smoke 5 cabins away.

Some non-smokers have said they don't smell anything.

Smoking is allowed on balconies so I wouldn't worry about it.

If it does bother your neighbors, they may say something to you.

If they're polite, work something out. If they're rude, smoke more.

I am a smoker too:o:o Always book a balcony for this reason. Just try to be conscious if your neighbors are out, and if they're not, CHAIN SMOKE:D:D When the ship is moving, I don't think it's too bad, but you will always have a chance of getting that neighbor that mutters something about SMOKE, and then they slam their balcony door, when going back inside. SHIP happens. Just try to be courteous and you should be fine. P.S. Five cartons onboard for $125. Not sure how much they cost where you are, but $8 per pack here in CT. It was a STEAL!!!!! Have a great cruise!

Ask your room steward for an ashtray and he will provide it for you. Thanks for being such a responsible smoker. Since you aren't a heavy smoker, I doubt your neighbors will have any complaint with you.

Ask the steward for an ashtray if there is not one in your cabin.

I bring a butt-bucket. You can get them at Wal-Mart for a couple of bucks.

We've never had a balcony and we don't smoke, so I can't really answer your question.

However, this is a very, very thoughtful post.

I have read on here about non-smokers being bothered by neighbors who smoke constantly on their balcony. You don't plan on doing that.

As a non smoker, it still doesn't bother me. Like others have said, be mindful and don't blow it directly on to an occupied neighboring balcony, and you should be fine. I figure, even if I can smell it, who cares? We encounter unpleasant odors from tons of sources every day. I'm in the open water. It's not like I'm stuck in a closet with you and can't breathe. I know others have different views on it, but I personally don't get hung up on it. Enjoy your trip!

I quit about 25 yrs ago, if someone is standing next to me smoking I move, if your out on your balcony smoking that is your right to do so, you paid for that balcony. As long as your not out there chain smoking I dont see a problem at all.

Thank you for all the replies. Seems like for the most part the smoking isn't a issue if I see that my neighbors are non smokers I may just let them know if I am bothering them to just be courteous and let me know.

I have read on here where some people take a water bottle and half fill it with water to use as an ashtray. From experience, even with an ashtray, the ashes fly around because of the wind out there when the ship is underway.

Please be careful when standing at the railing while smoking. The ashes have a tendency to fly around again because of the wind. In our seven cruises, we have never encountered a neighbor that has said anything about us smoking. Maybe they were smokers too.

Good thinking. Water bottle sounds like a good way to go for that reason.

I always pack a couple of plastic ashtrays when I travel, the last time on the FAsciantion, ashtrays were at such a premium on the Kido, I took mine with me when I went up there to have a smoke. When I left I made sure it was cold, and dumped it myself. Cruise happy, and thank you for being a considerate smoker. We are out there, but as said, there is someone who may complain because they smelled smoke from 15 cabins away, just because they can comlain. They can also focus on something else.:)

Buy a Butt-Can at Dollar General, Walmart or any auto parts store. It is made to fit in the cup holders of a car and has a lid with a hole so the butts go down into it and don't fly-away. Some of the butt-cans have a glow-in-the-dark rim so you can see it at night.

My dh buys a new one before each cruise and then just throws it away before we debark. They are only $2 at Dollar General so no great loss. He also takes a small box of sandwich sized zippy bags and will empty the butts out each day, seal up the bag and put it in the trash for the room steward.

:)

We just got back from our cruise on Wednesday. I am a non-smoker and don't like smelling smoke. Now, to be clear, I'm not one of those people who will lecture smokers or do the fake cough or any other drama queen stunts that I've seen from non-smokers. But I still don't like the smell.

We had a balcony cabin next to my brother and his wife, she is a smoker.

Honestly, I could sometimes smell the smoke on my balcony and sometimes I knew she was out there smoking because we were talking while she did, and I didn't smell it at all.

BUT, even when I did smell it, it was briefly!

When the ship was moving there was always a breeze, it would blow it off the balcony as fast as it blew it on the balcony.

Good to hear that from a non smoker. I would think it would be more of a problem in port when the ship is still. But even then a slight breeze would probably be blowing.

I am also an ex-smoker but don't have a problem with others smoking unless it's a confined space. The casino is rough but I go anyway and deal with it. Sitting on the balcony in port the smoke may be more noticeable unless there is a good breeze. The only real issue I ever had was on a RC cruise where my neighbor smoked a nasty, stinky cigar and somehow it always managed to find me! I was downwind of his balcony. Yuck.

I am a non-smoker and do not enjoy the smell of smoke. I have yet to have a balcony where at some point I wasn't bothered by smoke. That said, it is usually brief and has never ruined my cruise.

My big balcony pet peeve is LOUD TALKERS! oh, and last cruise someone bought their kid a vuvuzela and he blew it night and day!!!

Thank you, OP, for being thoughtful toward your cruising neighbors -- I do not have to tell you that many smokers are not thoughtful in this way. There is no doubt that there is a good deal of animosity shown on both sides when the issue of cruise ship smoking comes up on these boards. Smokers and non-smokers alike can become, shall we say, agitated.

Of course, being a non-smoker, I lean toward the perspective that smokers impose upon non-smokers -- how can they not? Smoke invades the realms of non-smokers; in the reverse situation, there is nothing which can be said to invade. I find I do not have tremendous sympathy for the plight of smokers who feel persecuted. Yet I recognize that smokers are, indeed, persecuted -- therein lies my mental conflict.

And as with all activities which could impinge on the peace or health or safety or conscience of others, the onus to do one's best not to impinge falls squarely, in my opinion, upon the practitioner of the activity in question. This does not in any way reduce the expectation of a certain minimum level of tolerance and forgiveness on the part of the one being impinged upon. My hope is simply that everyone would make a good faith effort to get along.

You are going out of your way to make this effort, and I commend you for it.

Let me say that I have a very sensitive nose (not always a blessing) and I really do not like cigarette smoke, mostly on principle, not because of allergies or breathing problems. There was a smoker a couple of balconies downwind of us on a Carnival cruise, and we did notice the smoke. But it did not bother us much, and it was not frequent. And we used our balcony a lot, as we always do while cruising. The smoker leaned somewhat over his balcony rail, perhaps to enjoy the view, perhaps to give the smoke the best chance of wending away from, rather than back toward the ship -- who knows? But I am very thankful that the smoker was not on the balcony next to ours, regardless of the frequency of his lighting up.

If you are not a chain smoker (which you say you are not), if you take precautions not to smoke while your neighbors are on their balconies, and if you consider smoking, at least from time to time, in other allowed areas on board, you will be the best "smoking neighbor" one could probably hope for, and hopefully, your balcony neighbors will either be smokers themselves, or tolerant and forgiving.

Again, thanks for wanting to allow others to enjoy their cruise as much as you hope to enjoy yours.
