Glad you had a good time on the Caribbean Cultures trip. We will be going on May 7th.

Would appreciate your input, especially on Dominican Fiesta and Santiago El Morro ship's excursions.

Thanks

If your are paying out of pocket for the Santiago El Moro excursion, I would say no. Stop at fort was too short. Hard to understand guide on bus with her limited command of English. The show we attended was all in Spanish. Just stared and had no clue. Lunch was at an Italian restaurant, but food served was Cuban themed and was decent. Just expected a real Cuban restaurant. Did not like the stop at the monument honoring Castro and the huge machetes. I did not get off the bus. Last stop downtown was only a few blocks from ship. Did not reboard and just toured on our own and walked a few blocks back to ship and did not feel the need to reboard bus to get back to the ship.

Fiesta was decent. Stopped in downtown Puerto Plata before meal. Interesting to see the local town square. Rum punch was free flowing on bus before and during dinner. Empanadas were good as an appetizer and the dancing onstage. The major disappointment was fried chicken and spaghetti as the main course. Excursion was advertised an an authentic Domican feast. Really? I truthfully would of stayed on ship and saved the money and not paid for this excursion had I known the meal was what you would of expected in the States.

Disappointed to read this about El Morro Tour and also Fiesta which I thought would have a Cuban flair.

Did anyone on this thread take the other Fathom Tour, El Cobre (sp?)? Wondering if that was better.

Thanks.

Not negating the other poster's experience, but as a counterpoint...

I did the El Morro tour over Christmas week and found it very interesting. It is NOT dealing with La Revolucion (that is a different tour) and as such would not get out at the monument with the machetes. We did get out at San Juan Hill, and we also had enough time at El Morro. I didn't time it, but I'm pretty sure everyone was back on the bus before our deadline. The buses go to different restaurants and are limited by availability - there is no place that could take even more than 2 buses if that. Just like anywhere else, there are going to be different types of restaurants - for example, Havana once had one of the largest Chinatowns around, and I know there are a number of Cubans with non-Hispanic heritage. My bus went to a private beach club. Other buses went to government-run restaurants. It all depends on what is available restaurant-wise and what they have available food-wise. Unless you are talking those affiliated with a hotel such as the restaurants at the Hotel Nacional in Havana, the restaurants are not like restaurants we in the US are used to. There may be a couple of choices food-wise, but largely it is whatever the government has provided when you are talking about the government-run places and what the owners have been able to get if you're talking the paladars. The cultural presentation...not sure why that being in Spanish was a surprise - from what I heard on the Christmas cruise, everyone had some kind of musical presentation...not a lecture or anything, so language is not really a barrier as music is a universal language. I looked at is as cultural immersion. I found the tour a very good introduction to Santiago.

I'm opting to do El Cobre on the 4/9 sailing because I've done El Morro and while I enjoyed it, forts and military stuff is not really my thing, so I didn't want to repeat the El Morro one and the one about La Revolucion has little interest to me.

In terms of the Fiesta, I agree that fried chicken and spaghetti seems odd...but not sure why you'd think that would have a Cuban flair as that's in the DR?

Is anyone on this post going on the Adoina April 9, 2017?
I'm Bobbie and I've been on the Adoina twice and I'm taking my 9 year old Granddaughter for Easter. I'd like to start a thread, but don't know how. If anyone is going on the cruise April 9, please meet me for lunch in front of the deck 5 restaurant on Monday April 10.

There is a thread on the "Other Cruise Lines Roll Calls" board. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2416790

I'll be on the ship, but I'm gluten-free, and can't do the MDR lunch - nothing on the menu works for me (was on the Adonia over Christmas, and looked then - breakfast and lunch are no-gos in the dining room as were most of the dinners). So it's buffet or Luna bars I bring myself for me. But have fun!

Fantastic Bobbie. Don't know that we'll be able to make lunch, but my family and I will be on the April 9th cruise. I have a 14 year old daughter and a 13 year old son. Hope to see you there.

Hard to believe it has been a year since we sailed on the Adonia! Met so many great folks on this cruise. Wish the Adonia was still doing Cuba and D.R. Fathom cruises offered on Princess just don't compare to a day in Santiago and overnights in Amber Cove. Mom and I plus some friends are doing 6nt RCCL Majesty of the Seas cruise out of FTL on Nov 5, 2018 that will overnight in Havana and also stop in Nassau.
