Las Vegas

Recommended Posts

We are going on an Alaskan cruise next May which finishes in Anchorage, and thinking of going via Las Vegas if it does not cost too much. , 2 questions 1. Is it worth going to and 2. recommendation of accommodation, any advice greatly appreciated.

Everyone should visit Las Vegas at least once in their lifetime, great fun place and stepping off location to visit the Grand Canyon, amazing sights to see.

Use Trip advisor to research hotels but I am sure someone who has been there more recently will comment. Visiting during the week and avoiding weekends usually means cheaper rooms and more deals to stay, ie free breakfasts etc

Just to add, on our first visit many years ago I booked to go to see Elvis Presley perform, even purchased a new suit for the occasion as I thought I may even get to meet the great man.

Imagine my disappointment at the end of the show to learn that the real man had died a couple of years before and I sat through a show performed by an imposter, good one at that, he sure fooled me!

Make sure you take in a show or get married (again) as there are lots of both going on in Vagas

Hi we did Alaska in 2013, so this is where we stayed.

The Shore Hotel in Santa Monica because it was opposite the Pier, near Venice Beach and HOHO buses take you into town all day long. Then in Vancouver we stayed at Pan Pacific Vancouver (Oceans 999 now) who actually do complimentary luggage transfers onto your ship for you - nice. Spent two days here pre cruise and loved it [emoji175]

I love Vegas, never a dull moment. I recommend any of the big hotels on the strip say between new York new York and Treasure Island. Find a map of strip and you will see where I mean. We stay at Cosmopolitan, it's a 5 star treat. Advice above re staying mid week is spot on. Wherever you stay ask for fountain view if available and you can watch bellagio fountains from your balcony or even from bathtub. Visit bellagio lobby, they do fantastic seasonal displays eg Halloween, Christmas etc. Venetian is worth a walk through. The big ferris wheel, I can't remember what its actually called is worth a go. They have excellent outlet malls for shopping and the mob museum is great. I wouldn't go back to Fremont street, too sleazy. Read up on funny things like you can't hail a taxi on the strip but you can drink alcohol. I could go on. Let me know if you want anything specific.

Really depends what you're into. If you like the shows and casinos on western ships that's what they're modelled after. Bellagio fountain is a crowd pleaser, though has been done other places now since then.

Worthwhile if you can fit it in but for me not must see.

Lost wages is pretty overrated.

BUT YOU HAVE TO SEE IT ONCE.

There’s nothing glamorous about the place it can be quite nasty if you’re not gambling.

A good cheap place to stay is the Orleans.a favourite off the locals.

It’s not on the strip but has a free shuttle to a couple big resorts.

It’s friendly,rooms just been refeshed.and cheap.

If you want to stay on the strip the Luxor is one I like.

United airline usually for a $100 or so will add internal flights.

On the way back to oz .get a morning flight to San Francisco.leave your baggage checked in and catch the train into town for the day.

Your flight to oz should leave about 11.00 pm

Ps if you are a crown&anchor member MGM has a reciprocating deal

Hi Philip, thank you, went to travel agent today, airfares working out really expensive from Anchorage to Las Vegas then to Adelaide nearly $2000, so still trying to work out fares from Anchorage to ??? Really frustrating as return flights are only $1000 to Las Vegas yet one way is soooo expensive

We flew Anchorage to Hawaii with Alaskan Air.

Fantastic flight and if you check them out consider the total cost of all categories.

We didn't fly economy and had really comfortable seats and the best meals ever on a flight.

The flight was just too short.

Flew from Hawaii to Sydney with Jetstar in business class.

The unlimited snacks run out after two hours and we didn't get our choice of meals as advertised. The seats were NOT comfortable and couldn't wait to get off.

I second Porky55 about the Pan Pacific in Vancouver. We had a room overlooking the harbour and watched the float planes come into the harbour with the mountains in the background.

In the morning we looked down from our room to watch the cruise ships dock at the terminal.

No taxi needed to get to the ship just catch the lift down and walk into the terminal.

We are flying from Adelaide to Honolulu cruising Radiance from Honolulu to Vancouver, staying overnight Vancouver then Golden Princess 7 night inside Alaskan passage finishing in Whittler booked I think ANC bus via Wild Life Park, that was all reasonable costs. Thanks for the information re: Alaska airlines, great to get recommendations just trying to work out cheapest way home. I spoke to the Travel Agent about getting return tickets as they are much cheaper, however, she said if you don't fly one way they cancel your flights, such a pain for them to charge so much for one way.

Whatever you decide, we've stayed in Vegas multiple times. I'm sure your TA can work out a good deal for you re flightes. We favour Hawaiian but whatever suits. Vegas is a not to be missed destination. These days we stay at the Tropicana. Prices are good, hotel great and the almost free Duece Bus stops right out the front. What more could you want?

In regards to is Vegas worth it, we went there years ago for two nights to vist the Grand Canyon.

We were ignorant about Vegas thinking that it was only gambling and shows there.

Needless to say we went back the next year for a couple of days to see all the things we missed out on. :D

Some good recommendations here. We go to Las Vegas once a year and always stay at Main Street Station. It is downtown and we like it because the downtown area still has some of the feel of the old LV. We find the Strip to be over-priced and very plastic-y ;). Plus, Main Street has a great microbrewery with excellent beers and very decent food, at reasonable prices. The buffet is excellent for breakfast, lunch and dinner less so. I have read that they are now charging a "resort fee", but it includes internet. I don't know how they can get away with this--they don't have a pool, spa, or even an exercise room :D I think it's $US15 a day, per room.

Buses stop at the end of Fremont St (at end of canopy), so you can use them to get to the Strip if you want. Taxis and Uber too. Buses can be hard to take back downtown from the Strip since they fill up but they start at Fremont St, so going to the Strip shouldn't be a problem.

Also--can't you book using cruise line air for your flight? We booked a one-way fare from LHR to ABQ (home) and got a great fare, business class. Do they not offer this in Australia? Sorry, I am not aware of what the policies are there!

Good luck, sounds like a great trip.

If you are comfortable booking your own flights, I look at Skyscanner for prices

i.e. Qantas - Adelaide to Honolulu and Lax to Adelaide $1212

Then US internal domestic flights - Anchorage to Las Vegas $285 plus bags probably

Las Vegas to LAX - $50 plus bags probably

Total AUD $1547 - then I book directly with the Airlines but then I prefer to do my own bookings.

Best of luck

There's me thinking book everything early the cruise has been discounted and never thought of doing Honolulu return then Anchorage to Las Vegas, Las Vegas to Honolulu? $1212 is a good price :(
