Saguenay

We were just notified that our departure time for Saguenay has been changed from 5:00 to 11:00PM. Is there anything to do in Saguenay in the evening? My impression is that it is a small community and the nearby National Park is the principal attraction. We were supposed to have a scenic cruising on the Saguenay Fjord as we departed Saguenay. We will now miss the legendary scenery of the fjord, as it will be now be pitch dark when we depart. Not sure why our cruise line thought this a good choice?

I am wondering if the change is due to the high water levels that the St. Lawrence River has been experiencing since early summer. The dams are releasing record amounts of water to lower water levels in Lake Ontario. Many changes have occurred in the area this last summer due to the high water situation. Hope you enjoy your cruise despite this change.

Which cruise line? NCL cancelled Gaspe entirely and replaced it with Sydney as the speed limit in the St. Lawrence has been reduced because of the whales being killed.

I am booked with a tour in Saguenay and hope they don't change our times.

That's right, we did have extra time in Saguenay. But nothing to do at night! The hop-on-hop off bus ends at 4:00, and cars had to be turned in by 7:00PM. Only 3 or 4 restaurants within walking distance of the ship, everything else in town was closed by 6:00. So not a good choice for an 11PM departure!

We were on the Zuiderdam in september with a stop in Saguenay. Wow! first the welcoming committee was incredible. Poeple all dressed up in costumes of the early settlers, square dancing, free blueberry pie and juice, maple candy...lots to see right there on the docks.

We bought a 4 hour tour right outside the cruise terminal from a local operator (they sell online). We were lucky to get on cause they only 4 spots left to sell and there was quite a line up for this tour. Apparently they usually sell out 4 or 5 months in advance but on this day they added an extra bus (they use 24 passenger buses that are quite confortable). The tour took us to some nicevillages, the scenery was great and we were right in the prime of fall folliage. We went to a village with a covered bridge with paintings from local artists on the walls, went up to the national park and did a short hike to 3 observation decks overlooking the fjord, just amazing! We had a short break for coffee in the village and also stopped at another park where there is a permanent nativity scenes exposition. Our guide Denis was excellent, his english was perfect and gave us lot's of information about the area without being boring. He treated us to some local pastries, local cheese (he says that Queen Elizabeth orders it for herself) and some chocolate covered blueberry. You can look them up on trip adviser, they have great reviews there. I'm not sure but I think the name of the company is Tours Fjord et Monde. Well worth the price, cheaper than on board tours that use the large buses.
