Booked an Alaskan for next August. Good grief the waiting is the worst!!!

you know pan my only issue right now is this i got a handicap on the epic when cabins were 499 they always cost more so mine was like 100 each more

now the cabins are 349 for inside but the obc they offer me and( there is never an upgrade cause the cabins are so few )are not what they are offering the other people in our roll call. I just think thats not very fair. I can not park the scooter else where or i could sleep in the inside cabin just fine. I think ncl should be a little fairer to us handicap people.

It is a shame that you must take an accessible cabin just to park a scooter. Have you tried asking if you could park your scooter someplace other than the corridor? I sometimes see them parked elsewhere.

Hi Kenosha,

The bench/handicap seating is usually at the upper back of the theatres. You have to up the stairs or access it from the upper level. If you go to http://www.ncl.com/cruise-ship/pearl/overview then on the right hand side midway down there is a 360 virtual tour. Open that up and look for the theatre. When the camera pans around the upper seating is to the left and right overlooking the regular seats. Looks like the "fancy" section but it has bench seating up there.

Hope that helps

Nicole

I wonder if it's something they added/changed. When i was on the Pearl in 2010, i didn't find any bench seating. I had worked with Charlene (the groups/accessibility co-ordinator) and she actually had to bring in a chair for me as there were no benches in the theatre. She put the chair in the main theatre, at the back in a little alcove area. The first time, the staff misunderstood her, i think, and hauled down a friggen sofa from Spinnaker lounge and put it in the theatre for me. I was totally mortified lolol. I didn't see any bench seating in the upper section and she didn't mention any either. When did you sail on the Pearl?

Last year I was on a Princess Carib scruise. A man had a scooter that didn't fit in his cabin so they let him park and plug in next to the elevator. One morning he went to get his scooter and somebody had pulled the plug!! NOT Funny!!!

i am like your fiancee. I make sure i research the cruise ships and look at tons of pictures of the public areas on the ship before i make any reservations. I would suggest you find any photos of the bathrooms in the cabin and if they are not appropriate, see if there are any wheelchair accessible cabins available. One thing ppl think, when viewing a larger passenger, is that they aren't handicapped cause they aren't in a wheelchair. But simply put, on some ships, it is an impossibility to use the bathrooms in the regular cabins. In those instances, an accessible room is the only way you'll be able to cruise. While the toilet is still often situated near a wall on one side, it has no wall on the otherside, which allows for accessibility. My first 2 cruises, the toilet was in an ok spot so i could use a regular cabin. On this cruise, it's tucked in a little alcove/stall.

Please be sure to contact the accessibility department of the cruise line and let them know your fiancee will be requiring alternative seating in venues that only have armchairs in them. It's a PITA to have to do that and quite embarassing to have an extra special chair hauled in, but it's necessary in order to have full access to all venues in the ship.

As far as treatment, ppl view BHMs in a much more positive light than BBWs, even the "supersize" ones so i wouldn't worry too much as to how he'll be treated. Besides, you'll never see these folks again so screw them if they have an issue. Just be nice, smile and kill them with kindness.

as for excursions, some excursions have a weight limit so you'll have to research those. THey're mainly the physical ones like parasailing, zipline, cave tubing and airboat riding. He probably won't be able to participate in them anyway but it's something to keep in mind.

hmmm, trying to think of anything else. Obviously, there's the airline issue but i'm sure he's had to deal with that before. There are plenty of elevators on the ship, so no worries about that. I would say my biggest piece of advice, is to reasearch, research, research. I am going on my October cruise, knowing that there are only 2 spots in the entire ship that i cannot have access to. But the accessibility department is also working with me to resolve that issue.

Tell your fiancee to go, have fun and live life to the fullest. Good luck and Bon VOyage.

Lots of great comments here.

Try YouTube videos to get an in depth look at your ship. You will be amazed what you can find. Find out what her sister ships are as well......broaden the possibilities for video. Photos and videos will go a long way to answer questions and relieve a wee bit of anxiety.

Have a wonderful trip!

Just wondering why you don't contact the Tuxedo people before the cruise and arrange for the tux to be in your cabin when you embark? We do this with my DH (who is large as well) We have learned to bring extra shirt that we know will fit as that is the one piece of the rental we have had problems with. That would solve the no tux problem if you really want to attend the Formal nights.

I cannot get a tuxedo rented from a cruise line in my size. I have tried on CCL and Royal. They just dont carry them in the size I need.

Hi there-fluffy girl here! Cruise is booked for South America for 31 days. OMG

I have many concerns and fears regarding this cruise. We are in a balcony room on the Golden Princess, and I can make do with the shower. Armless chairs will be the way to go for comfort. Hello Maitre'd. My biggest concern is getting on and off the ship and/or tendering. Steps are not my friend---I really want to see the penguins on the Falklands. I just hope I can get on and off the tender :o Otherwise I am on board for 31 days :(

I am also looking for one of those canes that has a seat on it that supports 350 lbs. I tire out and need to rest for just a bit. I found business class on COPA airlines for 2,000. pp. It is like first class. The flight is a minimum of 18 hours and my poor DH didn't want to be squished. We have purchased the 3rd seat before on Southwest when we flew to east coast. Well worth the money, plus you board first. On COPA we will get treated like first class. Free drinks, food, etc. Cross it off my bucket list.

Thank you for sharing all of your ideas. I really like CC.

You don't need the Maitre'd's help to get a chair with no arms in the dining room on Princess. All you have to do is mention it to the waiter as he escorts you to your seat, and he will immediately procure one for you. They are interspersed all through the dining room, so it won't be a problem. Believe me; I know. This is how I've done it for years.

Ms Rabbit is right research research research. I love cruisedeckplans.com. Not only able to see where you don't want your cabin but they have tonnes of pics of cabins. I don't make a booking without it!!!!! Just enjoy. I remember how worries I was but after I just politely but firmly made my needs known and relaxed about what I couldn't do it was all good!!!!!!!

From another big and fluffy guy, yes, I've tried that as well. It seems they don't have any in "Omar the Tent Maker" size. I too had to do without.

I am hoping that someone here can give me some guidance.

I recently flew home from a cruise with my mother who sufferer from Alzheimer so flying is challenging enough for us. We were on a totally full fight and had Economy Comfort seats with Delta. Sitting next to Mom was a POS. Mom started to freak out about it so I traded seats with her. We are both those less than 150Lbs people (Mom is less than 115Lbs). I did have my armrest down but the POS wouldn't fit in his seat with the armrest down. He complained to the flight attendant and I was asked/told to raise the armrest. When he sat down he took up at least 1/3 of my seat. I am sorry to complain but I was not happy. He did make a passing remark about it being a good thing Mom and I were so small. Trying to be funny?

During the flight my fellow passenger could not put his tray table down, due to his size, so he proceeded to put mine down and use it for his items (tablet, phone, work papers, snacks, ect.). This was done without asking me. I was so shocked I didn't say anything. When my mom need to get out to use the restroom we got a comment of "you should have gone before you boarded the plane." I do understand that moving in and out of a seat for a POS is not the easiest thing but come on. I do realize that he had to pick-up his stuff so we could get out and then pick up again when we returned, which is a pain. When I returned to my seat I refused to put my tray table down again in an effort to regain some of my space. Yes, it was passive aggressive, but I was at a loss of what to do with out causing a scene and also upsetting my mom more.

I do realize try to understand that POS do face challenges we, so called "average sized passengers" don't even think about. I am not trying to cause trouble here but what is the proper etiquette when dealing with a POS next to you. I don't want to fat shame but I don't feel I should have to give up part of my seat for someone else either. How should we have handled this?

Unfortunately Delta's policy concerning "Customers requiring extra seat space" only suggests that someone needing extra space actually purchase an extra seat. However it's implied that the person should be able to sit in the seat while the arm rest is down. These days the airlines do not want to kick anyone off a flight that could possibly cry foul as being disabled and some consider being a POS a disability.

If you are unable to sit in your seat without encroaching into the seat next to you while the armrest is down, please ask the agent if they can reseat you next to an empty seat. You might also consider purchasing an upgrade to First/Business Class.

We will do all possible to ensure your comfort but you might consider booking an additional seat in order to ensure your best comfort during your travel. Please call Delta Reservations at 1-800-221-1212 and they will be glad to assist

As it's not indicated in your post it can only be assumed that you may not have spoken up to the flight attendant which was certainly your right. Therefore the flight attendant made the judgment call by having lifted up the arm rest. Should this ever happen again you need to be knowledgeable of the Airlines policy and speak up.

I'm assuming your mother had the window seat and your were in the middle. To minimize the chances of this occurring again suggest you check on the type of air craft and select seats on the side of the plane in which the aisle seat armrest collapses. Most aircrafts generally have this feature as it allows for easier transfer of a wheelchair bound person into the seat. Generally it's the right aisle when facing towards the cockpit and begins a few rows after the bulk head sits. If you were aware that if the aisle seat in your row had this feature than you could have suggested that the aisle armrest be collapsed instead of the middle arm rest as it would allowed the person the same comfort and minimized the encroachment into your seat.

During the flight my fellow passenger could not put his tray table down, due to his size, so he proceeded to put mine down and use it for his items (tablet, phone, work papers, snacks, ect.). This was done without asking me. I was so shocked I didn't say anything. [/Quote]

You should have politely addressed your concerns with the passenger or called the flight attendant to address the issue. Remaining silent just sent the message that you had no issue with the passenger using your tray table.

When my mom need to get out to use the restroom we got a comment of "you should have gone before you boarded the plane." I do understand that moving in and out of a seat for a POS is not the easiest thing but come on. Comments such as what you expressed above happen regardless of a passengers size as most people don't want to be disturbed. Something tells me that this individual would have made the same comment even if not a POS. Personally I just ignore snippy comments .

I do realize try to understand that POS do face challenges we, so called "average sized passengers" don't even think about. I am not trying to cause trouble here but what is the proper etiquette when dealing with a POS next to you. Most POS understand how other passengers feel and go out of their way to try not to impose any further discomfort to others. ( Myself included). For the few exceptions such as what you experienced you should have politely spoken up at the time and addressed your concerns to flight attendant.

I think it is a difficult issue if you are trying to be polite. I always book an aisle seat because I don't want to feel "trapped" if I need to get up. On my last flight there were two seats (no middle) and the window one was occupied by a large man who barely fit in the seat and who took over the entire armrest between us. I am a small woman and didn't really "need" more room, but it was impossible for me to get into a comfortable position to read a book. I didn't speak to the flight attendent because there was no alternative seating, and I'm sure that the man was uncomfortable too.

I would have told him that if doesn't take his stuff off of my space I will toss it into the aisle. I had a similar thing happen to me in a hotel dining room, long story, but it wasn't connected with weight. By the way, I had a friend that weighed in at 130+ kilo, and she paid for the extra seat rather than be a PITA

Anyone have experience with Spirit airlines? I haven't had any trouble on Southwest, or any other line, though one Delta flight, I wasn't sure the seatbelt would make it. But I'm nervous their seats might be smaller. Their flight times are the most convenient on an upcoming trip.

Being a super big lady, flying is terrible. Most of us (not all) hate invading other people space and avoid it whenever possible. I look for planes that have 3 seats and then both my husband and I have the space we need when booking the middle seat. (Seatguru.com is a wonderful site)

I have to fly this month alone and though I can cram myself into a seat and work real hard to fasten a seat belt, I overlap onto the person space next to me. I either have to purchase a second seat or go first class.... whatever is cheapest.

The last time I flew, these are somethings others that don't have to do this might not realize big folks have to tolerate.

If I fly Delta, I must book through an operator, I can't get 2 seats online. That is $25 charge. After purchasing 2 seats, I still am not permitted to take a second carry on. If the flight isn't full, like mine was flying to and from Europe, you don't get any money back for the additional seat you purchased. (meanwhile, our friend who purchased 1 seat and ended up with 3 seats to himself to stretch out on for the 10 hour flight) Later discovered, if I would have purchased my tickets with Air France, I would have gotten a refund.(it was the same plane) Southwest will also refund the cost of a 2nd seat if the plane isn't full.

When I tried to book a second seat on a Air Tran or Trans Air, I forget their name, the booking agent (remember I couldn't book on line) couldn't figure out what I was talking about and it took me forever trying to explain why I needed a 2 seats in the same name. He charged me a fee for calling to book. Later, I spoke with a supervisor and they did take the fee off.

I want to thank those follow passengers that have been kind enough to tolerate the big folk in the seat next to you and speak to us in a considerate manner! Not all of us are inconsiderate to others comfort.

I just wish it didn't cost me even more (fee's for having to call and no extra carry on) plus making it so difficult to do "the right thing"... Airlines wake up and make it easier.

All airlines have seat belt extenders just ask the flight attendant.

I would avoid Spirit for many reasons, but to address your concern; The pitch for Spirit's seats is only 28". This is very cramped.

If you must book Spirit, make sure you understand all the additional fees you will pay, their limited schedule and the fact they have no interline agreement with any other airline.

If it's impossible for you to book online, they should waive this fee. Next time, ask them to do so.

Southwest will also refund the cost of a 2nd seat if the plane isn't full

They will refund this cost now, even if the plane is full. You just have to submit a form. Details are on their webpage.

Thank you. They do have ridiculous fees. I am leaning away from them. There are so many bad reviews. It's a direct flight so I'm still considering it. I will get an aisle seat due to handicapped boarding, but that pitch does sound very cramped. Might have to up my pain meds.
