Just booked this yesterday. Originally my wife and I were supposed to be going to the Western Med on the Epic but flights to Barcelona were going to be way too expensive.

Hope to have some people join us and countdown the days.

My wife and I are taking our granddaughter and step granddaughter on the July 15, 2012 cruise to Alaska on the NCL Pearl. This is for their high school graduation and a little R & R for us. This is 2 weeks after my wife has decided that she will be retiring from work. It has been nearly 20 years since we sailed on Princess to Alaska, but only 2 years removed from cruising on the NCL Jewel in the Balkin's.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Welcome aboard! This will be my 16th cruise and my wife's 5th. Our second on NCL but first time to Alaska.

That's awesome your wife is retiring. Were about 35 years away from that LOL

Hi Matt.... Thanks for the response. We are excited about the Alaska cruise and wish it was a lot sooner than 9 + months away. We have booked a room on Deck 11 of the Pearl. While I am retired I'm actually trying to convince my wife to retire even earlier than June of next year.

We reside in Phoenix, Az and intend to do a lot more crusing and travelling when she finally settles on a retirement time.

BTW ... one additional tidbit. I noted in your profile - that you were born on that golden date of June 13? My same birthdate !!! Ironic huh? Only thing is - we are in our early 60's.

Regards,

I'm so glad that you posted this. I booked a cabin on deck 11 as well. We are a family of four traveling with my two sons, ages (by cruise time) 20 & 17. We live in Massachusetts. I can't wait to start planning our excursions. We plan to spend a couple days in Seattle before our cruise to get used to the time change.

Matt, I originally was going to book the Epic but when I checked into the flights, lets just say sticker shock.

Welcome aboard! Hey neighbor...were from Connecticut. We plan on flying out to Seattle on Friday morning. That will give us Friday afternoon/night to get settled and all day Saturday to check out Seattle.

Yea i was expecting them to be expensive but not that expensive! I couldnt justify spending $1,600 a person on airfare. Actually if we wanted a direct flight from JFK to Barcelona it would have been even more.

As of right now JFK to Seattle is at $393 through Delta. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger soon and booking because i dont see it going down much more than that.

Thank goodness I don't have to fly as far as both of you, Phoenix is far enough and surprisingly the airfares are not much different in cost than what Matt mentioned.

We are arriving in Seattle on the 12th, and staying at a hotel in Pioneer Square with some touring and a dinner at Ivar's for sure on the agenda. Should be interesting travelling for me with 3 girls, (wife and two 18 year old granddaughters). The granddaughters are both pretty active, so I am sure I will get "dragged" to various places, both in Seattle and along the cruise stops.

We have been tentative looking at the Mendenhall Glacier tour in Juneau, The Zip Line in Ketchican (for the 3 girls), and not quite sure about Skagway yet. Anyway it is great seeing fellow cruiser's here, and I look forward to more 'chatting'

I think I am going to give Virgin America a try out of Boston. Their fares are similar to Jet Blue. I probably won't be able to book until around Christmas. I haven't planned anything yet. I just booked the cruise last week so there is much to do. My boys want to go see the Mariners. They'll be home against the Rangers. It's funny because if we had booked at the end of June the Red Sox would be in town. Because of my son's college schedule and online classes we couldn't go until mid July. Did either one of you spring for a balcony? I went with an inside cabin. The 2000.00 extra for a balcony wasn't worth it to me.

Hi again Sheila,

We did book a balcony....in fact a mid ship mini suite. There were a couple of reasons for us: First the size of the rooms, (inside appears smaller) 2nd the fact that Alaska has some of the best scenery of any place I have ever been. The balcony was a big plus, as this 'opens' up the room and gives a bit more breathing room, and a place to watch for whales, and glaciers etc etc while cruising. I read many posts here and at other sites and the mini suite was the answer for us.

When we sailed in Europe I was in an inside cabin and (myself speaking) vowed I would never sleep without at least a window. A personal preference for me.

As I mentioned this is a cruise with 3 girls and me, so I am going to be the odd "man" out, and space is going to be at a premium for us.

Were in an inside as well. Its funny i was telling this to my last roll call that there is no rhyme or reason to what type of cabin I pick. We had a balcony in August on the Jewel but yet we have an inside for this cruise. I guess it depends if I'm in a spending mood the day I book lol. I certainly have no issue with inside cabins and find we dont really use the balcony much when we have it. Although being Alaska I'm worried we'll miss it. I'm hoping if prices go down at somepoint we might be able to get to an outside cabin. We'll see.

I had an inside on the Disney Wonder and then went with a window on the Dawn. I picked inside because I prefer to sleep in total darkness. We really don't spend a lot of time in our cabin so this time it made sense. When I factored in all the other expenses involved, it was the way to go for us. I may regret it, I may not. I've never had a balcony so I guess I don't really know what I am missing.

We have been looking but have not yet booked anything...... One place you may want to look at is: http://www.cruiseportinsider.com/ There is a load of information. After going to the web site, then click on Alaska, and inside there is information on each of the cities that make up the inside passage cruise stops. There are also various excursions listed with some having video. We have looked at many different things, but until we can sit down with the Grandkids over the holiday's we will probably wait on making specific plans/reservations.

Wow, great deal on the airfare. I'm still waiting. Been checking prices but nothing yet. As far as excursions go, I guess I will need to ask my teenagers what they would like to do. I'll check that website. So much to plan. I'm trying to find a hotel in Seattle right now. That seems to be taking me longer than usual. I was looking for something close to the attractions, free breakfast and good public transportation nearby. Seems it doesn't exist.

Shiela, we found a reasonable hotel (As reasonable as any others we found in the area) in Pioneer Square which is one block from the light rail stop. We intend to take the rail from the airport to the hotel. From what I have been told, this hotel is within walking distance of the Pikes Market, Underground City, and other sites. Unfortunately I don't think they provide free breakfast, but are really close to transportation as mentioned above. I can't remember the exact cost per night but believe it was around $225 or so. If you are interested I can supply more information when I chat with my wife. (she booked the rooms) Even tho it is a bunch of months away... it is still getting exciting huh??
