Carnival Liberty Evacuation

We are in St Thomas on the Carnival Liberty. All passengers were evacuated off the ship at 11:45 am. We do not know what is going on.

Staff and crew are now being evacuated. Fire trucks are arriving. We heard something about CO2 being released in the engine room. Everything seems orderly at the moment.

Based on the announcements, it appears that the captain and the cruise director are still on the bridge.

Thank goodness you are in a port. Prayers to all for a safe resolution to this issue.

We just spoke to a crew member who either will not say what is going on or does not know what is going on. We, like many people, do not have a photo ID or money on us.

Oh goodness, hope all is safe and you'll be able to resume your cruise!!

It appears that the police are directing all traffic away from the ship with the exception of emergency vehicles. A lot of passengers are returning from shopping and look confused about what is going on. We have situated ourselves away from the ship, just to get out of the sun.

Announcements are being made from the bridge, but it is difficult to hear since there is now a helicopter near the ship.

It appears that close to 1000 crew and passengers were evacuated. The rest of the passengers are most likely on excursions or are shopping.

Although we are docked in St Thomas and not at sea, a lot of passengers left the ship with their life vests. Most likely a visceral reaction to the situation.

This is certainly peculiar. When we were on board, we thought that this was a drill, but the way the staff and crew were running to their emergency stations, it looked like they were concerned. I would not say they were panicked, but you could tell that this was something of concern. I stated earlier that there was a helicopter near the ship, but I can not see it visually. The noise may be a helicopter or a similar noise coming from the engines of the ship.

So the noise I mentioned earlier is definitely coming from the ship and not from a helicopter. There have been no announcements recently from the bridge.

If its CO2 leak that will definitely not be good if someone walked right into a pocket of it. It will kill you dead instantly. I just went through confined space entry training at my job and CO2 is an instant killer. I"m sure the ship has air monitors all over and if Oxygen levels drop below 19.5% alarms sound and monitors tell bridge what the monitor is sensing and they take the action necessary for the safety of passengers. if your at sea then everyone is told to go outside until the leak or problem is found. Ships crew train for this all the time. They have all the necessary breathing apparatuses, fireman suits for things like this.

Prayers are being sent for everyone involved.

Do you see anyone on ship in full oxygen mask and oxygen tanks? Lots of cargo doors open on the side of the ship trying to vent it?

And the helicopter-like noises the OP hears could be emergency ventilation for that area of the ship.

An ambulance just arrived. I am not sure if it is related to what is going on onboard the ship or if a passenger off the ship needs medical assistance.

Hopefully it's something that can be resolved quickly and have them on their way today. It would be a nightmare trying to move a ship full of people by air back to home port.
