What happens when they skip GSC

Just as the title says, I'm curious as to how the itinerary changes if the captain decides to skip GSC due to weather. Does the ship go to Atlantis and spend the extra day there?

Thank you. Hadn't ever given it any thought til reading a couple posts about it happening sometimes especially in february/March. I wouldn't care either way, especially if the extra time was spent at Atlantis!

Atlantis is a resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, If you would like to go there, you need to purchase an expensive day pass or book an expensive excursion. We’ve made it to GSC three out of four, when we skipped the ship headed to Nassau a day early, in the late afternoon, no time for Atlantis.

Mostly it becomes a Sea day. When possible and your next port of call is Nassau, they sometimes will dock in the evening (after the other ships that day leave, so you could spend the evening in Nassau. Down side of this is that the shops and casino will be closed. And for us, we would not venture out after dark in Nassau.

Do you mean Nassau? It would be up to the Captain. Atlantis is a Marriott owned resort that is a 15 minute taxi ride from the dock. It costs a lot of money to use their facilities. I spent $900 for four adults and 2 children for everything. I wouldn't be able to do that a second day.

when the breakaway missed GSC due to the weather, it sailed straight to Nassau arriving around 4/5pm and doing an overnight in the port

March 2017 wifey and I did a four day on the Epic. Stops in Nassau and GSC.

Seas were too rough for GSC, so the captain decided we’d stay overnight and the next day in Nassau.

However, they did open the shops and casino after 7pm that first day, and kept them open until about 3-4 am the morning of our return. So the ship was operating like it was a sea day, but we were still docked.

I’ve missed both GSC and LSC (aka Coco Cay - Royal’s island) and both resulted in a day at sea. Pre-booked cabana cost was credited back to my on board account, not the credit card used to book. Hoping to make it there this year - it’s been a while!

One of three things, and usually in this order:

1. Day at sea.

2. Side trip to Nassau

3. Side trip to Freeport.

If you spend the day at sea you get a small refundable OBC for the port fees and maybe a tiny OBC.

As mentioned, it is up to the captain. Normally it is just an extended day at sea. The ship may head to Nassau but normally not. We have had this happen to us on NCL, RCI and HAL. Always we have just sailed around and enjoyed the sea day.

It's not entirely up to the captain. It's also depends on whether a berth is available at another port.

(Alaskan cruise in a couple of months where the weather can be unpredictable). To the OP when we couldn’t go to GSC due to rough seas we had an extra sea day.

One year GSC was scheduled for our last day of the cruise. We missed GSC and it became a sea day. Last month GSC was scheduled for our second to last day as we were due in Nassau the last day. We missed GSC and arrived in Nassau around 1pm and did an overnight. We received $6 refund per person

If you skip GSC, most likely I am on the sailing because I seem to be the GSC Jinx.

With all the times the port has been cancelled on me I've never actually made it there. I'm starting to doubt its existence.

We've either gotten an overnight in Nassau or a sea day (the sea day is the preferred option in our book).

We went to Nassau for the second time in the 7 days. Joy!

It happened to us on the ESCAPE in Nov 2017. they made the announcement while I was in the Buffet area. A rather loud round of applause occurred and overall the majority of the ship was happy to be going to Nassau instead.

As far as I know, yes. I’ve pre-booked 2 cabanas on 2 different cruise lines, and both times the cost was refunded on my on board account. I wouldn’t hesitate to prepay gratuities, as those would only need to be refunded if the entire cruise were cancelled. :eek: I’m a fan of pre-paying gratuities, as it leaves me with a smaller on board account.

We were on the same cruise! I was so happy they opened the casino, otherwise it would have been very boring. We don't care for Nassau, so were disappointed in staying there. However not as disappointed as a large group on the ship. There was a wedding scheduled to take place on GSC, and many of the people on board were there for the wedding (all had matching t-shirts throughout the week). Instead, they were married in Spice H2O.
