We are 6 arriving on Navigator of the seas October 20

We are looking for recommendations as we would like to see windmills, Anne frank house and do the heineken experience. Van Gogh museum would be a bonus but unsure if this is all doable.

Any suggestions? We are In port from 7-5

You need to book your AFH tickets online: http://www.annefrank.org/en/Museum/Practical-information/Online-ticket-sales/

You can also book the Van Gogh online to avoid queues: https://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/en/plan-your-visit/tickets-and-webstore

Don't think you will have any time for windmills as your time in port is quite limited and I think it would be wise just to focus on the city itself. There is a lot to see in Amsterdam.

Have no interest in the Heineken experience so can't comment on that. However, I believe that you can also purchase skip the line tickets for the Heineken.

Thank you do you have a suggestion on which order to go to first? Can we walk to everything?

Amsterdam is a very walkable city. If possible, I would visit the AFH first (you can walk or take trams 13 or 17 - it is a nice walk to the AFH) and then take the tram to visit the Van Gogh museum (walk back to Dam & then take either tram 2 or 5 to Museumplein). Also in the immediate vicinity of the Van Gogh is the spectacular Rijksmuseum (about a 5 minute walk from the Van Gogh). You can also book the Rijksmuseum to avoid queues. The order in which you visit will depend on your timed ticket to the AFH. Don't know about the Heineken experience. I also think that "Our Lord in the Attic" is very interesting and worth a visit (https://www.opsolder.nl/en) - wouldn't take much time to do a quick audio tour (located in the red light district just a few blocks from Dam Square).

Ah, so much to see, so little time.

Thank you approximately how long is the walk? Where is the tram in relation to the ship?

Tramnr 26 stops close to the cruise terminal.,however it ends at Centraal Station, where you can change to other trams as mentioned.

Walking from the cruise terminal to AF huis might be around 30 minutes, depending what route you take.

All trams and more info on this website: https://en.gvb.nl/

Absolutely make reservation for AF huis, this can done 2 months prior, do it right away then. It sells out very fast.

Without reservation you need to stay on line for a long time, and only in the afternoon, so forget about it.

There is another release for tickets about 2-3 weeks before but that is incl. lecture etc., and cost a little extra.

Keep checking their website for that.

Also Van Goghmuseum is better with reservations.

You donot have time enough to see the windmills at Zaanse Schans unfortunately.

Windmill Gooyer is closest to the cruise terminal, see this website: https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/search-results?trm=windmill+gooyer&idt=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000

  • 1 month later...

Gooyer isn't open to the public though - you can only admire it from the outside. Zaanse Schans windmills are very touristy. You really have to go to the Schermermolen if you want the authentic experience (it's about 10 mins beyond Zaanse Schans.

Conceivably if you got an early appointment for AFH and a good private guide who knows the area to the north of Amsterdam well you could combine the two. But if AFH is your priority and you don't get an early appointment then not possible.

Definitely pre-book an early appointment at AFH as soon as you can - we had a 10am appointment and there was a 2 hour line for those without pre-booked tickets when we arrived and a 5 hour line when we left less than an hour later. With our pre-booked tickets we walked right in. We didn't visit windmills, Heineken experience or the Van Gogh.

At the end of our cruise, is it possible to just walk from cruise ship to Central train station....then take the train to airport?

We are planning on taking the train to Amsterdam when we arrive pre cruise, then walking to our airbnb that we have for a couple nights before boarding the ship.

We thought we would then use the HOHO for the day. Go to Rijksmuseum Museum with pre bought tickets, VincentVan Gogh Museum (with pre paid Timed tickets), and then wonder through the redlight district, trying to stay up as long as we can!

The next day we planned on going by train to Zaanse Schans, then perhaps a evening cruise.

Our final day we would have pre bought tickets of AFH in the am, then head on to board the cruise ship. We are staying near the Dam area. We are thinking about purchasing the Travel Ticket for the 3 days, (3days train, bus, trams, ferries), but not sure we would need it. the city seems very 'walkable'.

Does this sound reasonable? Any suggestions? Advise?

Yes, it is an easy 15 minute walk, flat surface, no up/down. Just turn right upon exiting the cruise terminal and head down Piet Heinkade - you can't miss the station.

And, yes, the city is very walkable but we do occasionally use the trams.

When we visited Zaanse Schans we took the bus from Centraal Station (Rnet - bus 391- runs every 15 minutes) - the bus stops right at Zaanse Schans whereas the train does not (however, it is a short 15 minute walk if you take the train).

Thanks so much for the info. It may seem like a silly question, but what is a tram? It's not a bus is it?

Maybe you call it a streetcar? Be careful when crossing streets, they travel fast. The same with the many bicycles!

Do we look for the same bus..Rnet 391 to return to Centraal Station after visiting Zaanse Schans?

And if we took the train, is the station called Zaanse Schans? And returning, we just get off the train at Centraal station?

Yes, same bus to and fro. More info here: www.bus391.nl.

The train station is Koog - Zaandijk (20 min train ride + 15 minute walk). Return to Centraal Station in Amsterdam. Here are step by step instructions for taking the train:

Recently the trainstation Koog-Zaandijk is renamed into Koog Zaanse Schans. The stop before that used to be Koog-Bloemwijk and now is renamed into Koog aan de Zaan.
