Facts about my family

We're a family of 4 which include mom, dad and 2 boys aged 6 and 14. We live in Virginia right at the North Carolina border. Mom is a nurse and I own an IT firm. We're both in our 30's.

Planning

I booked this cruise in January 2017 when they had the $50 deposits. It was kind of a spur of the moment booking. We didn't book due to the ship or the ports, I am not even sure why we booked this cruise. I emailed my PVP and told her to let me know which rooms were open. I always book through my PVP because she lets me know of rooms that aren't available on the Carnival site. (I would never use a TA, I am fully capable of handling my own planning. It's half the fun for me).

As soon as I made our deposit, I went ahead and started getting gift cards to pay off the cruise. I ended up saving $400 by using the gift cards to pay off our cruise fare + grats. On April 26th 2017 FTTF opened up so I snagged it as well. On December 13th the dates opened up on Southwest for us to reserve our flight so I went ahead and did that as well. Once I was done with that, I was able to really start planning our vacation.

We typically go to our destination city a few days early to begin our vacation then stay a few days later as well. Also in December I went ahead and paid off our cruise balance, printed everything that we needed including the health questionnaire and signed it, which we would end up not needing.

In March Carnival announced the new Pixels package where you could get all of your prints + digital for $249. I went ahead and purchased that for my next 3 cruises. Boy am I glad I did! (I'll touch on this later)

From this point it was a waiting game until it was time to cruise in May!

Wednesday, May 16th - Raleigh

I checked my kids out of school at noon so we could begin our vacation. Let's face it it wasn't the kids who was most anxious, it was mom and I. We got them from school, went to Chick-Fil-A for lunch then headed 2 hours to Raleigh to get our hotel and spend the day around the triangle.

20180516_162319-1008-x-756-300x225.jpg

We made it to Raleigh, checked into our hotel at Days Inn. This is a no frills hotel which we just booked primarily to keep our car there while we were gone. They have a free shuttle to/from the airport. It's not a bad hotel by any means, just not something we typically stay at. The cost for the 2 weeks we were gone for 2 double beds (EEK) was only $109 which included the parking. We ended up going to the mall so mom could get her nails done and my son could blow $200 on some Apple headphones. Once mom was done with her nails, we would end up going to The Cheesecake Factory for some dinner. The service here wasn't great nor was the food. I've never been a fan of The Cheesecake Factory. After dinner we just went back to the hotel because we had an early morning ahead of us.

Thursday, May 17th - Raleigh, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach

We woke up and got ready to begin our vacation in Florida. We got on the 4am shuttle at the hotel and headed to Raleigh/Durham International Airport. RDU was actually fairly busy that morning when we got there. The line inside at Southwest was pretty long to drop off luggage so I used the skycap outside. Gave them 10 bucks and was inside in no time. We went to our terminal where we'd sit and wait on our boarding.

We arrived at MCO and quickly deplaned and made it to the other building to get our luggage. Once we had our luggage we went to find the car rental places. I had originally scheduled a shuttle to Cocoa Beach through Cocoa Beach Shuttle but we wanted to go to Kennedy Space Center instead, so I rented a car ahead of time. We found National Car Rental and since I am an Emerald Club Member we were able to bypass the counter and go directly to the lot to pick out which car we wanted. I ended up grabbing a Nissan which had just come in. I grabbed our car and off we went to Kennedy Space Center.

Thursday, May 17th - Raleigh, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach (continued)

We got to Kennedy Space Center a little early (before they opened) so we ended up going to Cracker Barrel in Titusville for some breakfast. Food and service was good as always. Once we finished eating, we headed back to Kennedy Space Center. Now I knew we'd be tired today so we planned on making this a short day there, then going back tomorrow. I did the pricing online and realized that season tickets were cheaper than 2 days there + parking + the bus tour, so that's what I did. We got to KSC and had to to go guest services to get our permanent passes. Once we got them, we started checking things out there. We spent a lot of the day there, but were just exhausted by around 2p so we headed to our hotel.

I had booked the Courtyard by Marriott in Cocoa Beach since it was on the beach and had great reviews. Plus I am a Marriott Reward member.

20180516_162319-1008-x-756-300x225.jpg

For 2 nights with 2 queen beds + sofa bed + ocean view balcony was $491. We got settled into our hotel and unpacked. I think we even took a nap!

Once we woke up, we decided to go to dinner. We went up to Cape Canaveral and ate at Grills which is near the cruise terminal. EXCELLENT food! In fact I think this was the best food we had all vacation.

20180517_185314-1008-x-756-300x225.jpg

After we ate, we went back to the room to call it a night. We were all tired from getting up at 3:30am and then spending the day in the heat at KSC.

Friday, May 18th - Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach

We slept in today. Once we finally made it out of bed, we went to breakfast nearby to a Waffle House. It was ok, typical Waffle House. After we finished breakfast, we made our way back to Kennedy Space Center. We saw everything we didn't yesterday, and even saw some things again. Today was much more enjoyable since we were rested.

After we finished at KSC we went back to the hotel. On our way back we stopped at McDonald's for lunch. GAG! After there we went to the Winn-Dixie behind the place to get our cruise supplies, 4 sleeves of soda, chips and wine. From there we took things back to the hotel to drop off, then I went to take our rental car back. I took it back to Enterprise at Cape Canaveral. (National is owned by Enterprise). I then caught an Uber back to our hotel from there ($12.68). I got back to the hotel and we went to the beach for a little bit before wanting to go to dinner. My wife wanted to go to the pier, so we caught an Uber up to the Cocoa Beach Pier to eat ($7). We ended up eating at Pelican's Bar & Grill at the pier, which was okay. It was $61 for us to eat there.

20180518_183655-1008-x-756-300x225.jpg

After eating we watched some surfers for a little bit, before getting an Uber and heading back to the hotel. We needed to get rested up because tomorrow was a big day for us. We were all excited!

Saturday, May 19th - Cape Canaveral, EMBARKATION!!!

We woke up early today so we could get ready to head to port. We were going to take a shuttle but it was a shared shuttle so I didn't want to be crammed together with eleventy bazillion other people so we just called an Uber. It took Uber 5 minutes to get to us for an UberXL and cost $26.85 to get to the port.

20180519_093401-1024x768.jpg

We called for Uber at 9:30, he arrived at 9:35 and we were at the terminal at 9:45. When we arrived we waited in line for MAYBE 5 minutes while a space opened for us to park. Once we parked a porter came and took our luggage. I informed him we had FTTF and it needed to be marked priority. He thanked me for letting him know because he FTTF luggage went on a separate cart. I tipped him and in we went. There were exactly 87,962 people in line. I counted. Thankfully with FTTF we skipped them and went to the front to get scanned in. We went to the waiting room for a brief period then we embarked the ship. We were on the ship at Guy's by 10:45am.

We went straight to our room to drop off our sodas and carry on luggage. All we did was set everything down and scurry up to Guy's before they got busy. There was no line so we were able to get our food and sit before everyone else got there.

20180519_111548-1024x768.jpg

For those wondering, our S&S cards were in our mailbox in the sealed envelope. The metal fire doors were closed but we knew we could open them and go to our room, which we did.

SS-1024x768.jpg

After we ate we went back to the room and our luggage was there. Our room was 2282 which was a cove balcony room, right across from the elevators (fwd) and the room location was PERFECT. We LOVED it.

Around 3:30 (I think) we went up to the Southern Lights Dining Room which is where we had our muster drill. All muster drills on the Magic are inside at a restaurant or club. Muster was great this time. It lasted all of 15 minutes and we were out of there. It was raining so there was no sail-away party on lido. Rather, we went back to our cabin to watch us sail away from our balcony.

After we sailed away we took a short nap before dinner. We always do YTD because we don't want to sit with strangers and if we don't like our wait staff we're not stuck with them the duration of the cruise.

We headed to dinner at 5:30 and went straight in. We were sat at a table by the window and our wait staff was Cristian, Beverly and Ireno. I am a picky eater and typically get the same thing at the MDR every night which is flat iron sirloin, 2 shrimp cocktail apps and chocolate melting cake with 2 ice creams.

This was the BEST dining experience we've ever had on a Carnival cruise. The wait staff was PHENOMENAL, the food was good and the best part was we were out of there in 45 minutes every night. It was great. I know some people have to have hours to eat but not us. There's no reason it should take us hours to eat our dinner. 45 minutes is perfect. (At home we're typically done in 10-15 minutes)

We went back to our cabin afterwards since we were tired. We then met our steward, Noel. He asked us what service we wanted and we said both morning and night. He also brought us extra pillows.

I know some people need ice but our fridge kept things very cold, just like a fridge at home. Also our cabin had good ventilation on the fridge so we didn't need to keep the cabinet door open like other ships.

20180519_122918-1024x768.jpg

After that though, we never saw him again. No complaints, we didn't need him. It's just the first time we didn't see our steward.

Sunday, May 20th - Day at sea

Today was a good day, we all slept in pretty late. We woke up and went to the MDR for breakfast. Then I ended up walking around the ship to take pictures of everything. While I was out, I stopped at Cucina del Capitano for lunch. I was by myself so I just ordered a bowl of spaghetti. It was good. I don't think I would have been happy had I paid a lot for it but for free, it was good.

I ended up just walking around the ship and watching things that were going on. At some point I think I went and took a nap. This day is kind of a blur for me.

Tonight is elegant night. Around 5 we got ready so we could go get in line at 5:30. We don't dress up, jeans, polo and tennis shoes for me is it. I am on a cruise, not going to prom. On past cruises I have seen a handful of jackets and people dressed up on elegant night but not tonight. In fact my jeans/polo was more dressed up than most people there. Pretty much everyone had shorts and yes, hats on. My meal still tasted great and the service was still top notch. In fact the only reason it stood out to me was because of the complainers on here. Otherwise I wouldn't of even noticed.

Once we were done, I told Cristian I'd see him tomorrow and he said we wouldn't because he was getting off tomorrow being transferred to the Fantasy. BOO. After we left the MDR we went to get some pictures taken. We had the unlimited package so I wanted to make the most of it.

After pictures my oldest went and did his own thing. Mom, little bear and I went to the showtime theater to see 88 Keys perform. I was very disappointed in this. I guess I was comparing them to the 88 Keys on the Splendor last year which were fantastic.

Afterward we went back to the cabin and the oldest had gone back since he was tired. He babysat so mom and I could go to the casino for a little bit. After we got done there we went to get some pizza then to the cabin to call it a night. We had port tomorrow!

Monday, May 21st - Costa Maya, Mexico

We got off of the ship around noon and through the port area. This is a huge port! We found our way to the exit and was able to find the taxis. We got a taxi and had them take us to Yaya Beach ($7) which I had prebooked for $119 for the all inclusive package. It was a nice time there. The only complaint was the people walking by trying to sell crap. LEAVE ME ALONE. We enjoyed our day at Yaya Beach Club and had plenty of food and drink. The kids had a great time swimming and playing in the sand.

P1020337-300x225.jpg

Once we were done, we had our waitress grab us a taxi in which we promptly were in and on our way back to the port. We shopped a little bit in port before heading back to the ship to get ready for dinner.

We made it to the MDR and I knew Cristian was gone. I still asked for his section which we got and still had Beverly and Ireno. We sat at the same table by the window every night also which was great. The new server was Julio though. He was amazing! By tonight Beverly knew what we wanted to eat as well as deserts. Even with Julio we were still out in 45 minutes every night. PERFECT!

After dinner we went to get more pictures made, then went to the playlist show "Country Road". This was much better than 88 Keys. After the show we went to the atrium to watch what was going on there, then we shopped a bit only to head back to the cabin and go to sleep. Tomorrow is another port!

Tuesday, May 22nd - Isla Roatan, Honduras

We made our way off the ship around 9:30 and again made our way through the port area, trying to find the exit. I finally found the exit and made our way out of the terminal, up the hill and then down the hill out of the security gate. We had prebooked a tour through Rony's ($100 for 4 of us) and I promptly found Rony's Tours in the mass of vendors. We got in the car with our driver Arnold and off we went!

20180522_145156-300x225.jpg

Arnold asked what all we wanted to do and we told him. One of the things was to go to Daniel Johnson's and he said it was a small place that got busy very quickly and suggested we go there first to beat the cruise traffic. I am glad we did because they did get busy fast. Thankfully we were the first there and were able to go through quickly. It was awesome seeing some of their monkeys and birds. They were very well kept and treated. My favorite thing and probably the highlight of our trip was seeing and holding a sloth though. She was so little and cute and soft. I would love to have her at home!! Daniel Johnsons was only $10/pp to get in btw.

IMG_0836-300x225.jpg

After we left Daniel Johnson's we headed out to explore. Arnold showed us his neighborhood, where he lived, all of the good and bad of that side of Roatan. It wasn't bad, just impoverished. After we saw that side, we did a little shopping at the highest peak there in Roatan where we could see all of the island almost and mainland Honduras. There were little shops there as well. We bought a few things from the locals. From there, we headed down toward the opposite end of the island, near Coxen Hole.

We spent some time around West Bay and Coxen Hole area. We ended up stopping for lunch at some beach restaurant. From there, we zig-zagged the island to head back to the port. We had seen about everything. Arnold was very mindful of our time, showed us everything we wanted to see and more, very polite. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Rony's Tours if you're going to Roatan. They're amazing.

We shopped a little in port, before heading back to the ship. When we got back on the ship we went and played putt-putt since nobody was back on board yet. After putt-putt, we went and got ready for dinner.

After dinner, we did some more pictures then we went to the HASBRO game show. We've seen this a dozen times but it was still fun to watch. From there we were tired so we just went to bed. Tomorrow was another early port!

Wednesday, May 23rd - Belize

Belize is a tender port so it took us about 20 minutes to get to the port. We had a tour booked with King David Castillo. He met us outside of the terminal gates and got us in our ride with Robert who would be our guide for the day. Robert first took us to the Community Baboon Sanctuary, explaining the history and everything we saw in Belize City on our way.

Once we got to the sanctuary, we walked across the street and into the woods with our guide. I thought we were going to a zoo but no, we were going to see these monkeys in the wild!! About 10 minutes walking and we came across a family of 7 Howler Monkeys. They were so amazing. They were as intrigued by us as we were them. They would come down from the trees and take fruit from our hands before scurrying back up into the trees.

IMG_1119-e1527871014327-225x300.jpg

It was an amazing experience and I LOVED this. We learned a lot about them also. Once we were finished in the woods we went to their little museum back across the street.

Once we were finished there, we headed down to Altun Ha mayan ruins. This was an awesome experience also, especially learning the facts about these ruins and some of the things they've found there on the site. It was HOT this day but it was still a great site and we enjoyed seeing them and climbing them.

IMG_1161-300x225.jpg

After we left the ruins, we ended up meeting up with the group David was hosting, so we together went to a nearby restaurant for lunch. It was good food, definitely not American food though. haha

Once we were done lunch, it was time to head back to Belize City. However we had taken some school supplies to donate to a local school there. We stopped at a school to do that. We met the students, the teachers and they were very thankful. It wasn't anything like American schools, that's for sure.

IMG_1193-300x225.jpg

From the school we zig-zagged back through Belize City checking things out, and finally made it back to the port.

One thing I want to say, don't believe everything you read when people tell you how bad Belize is. Belize is a beautiful country with lots of great people there. I never once felt unsafe anywhere. It was a great place and I'd love to go back. Also as far as King David Castillo (Altournative Belize Services), the price he charges includes all of your admission fees and lunch. He is a GREAT guy and is ranked #1 in Belize for tourism. He was VERY mindful of time, very caring about his company and country and I would use him again without thinking twice about it. Belize was great!!

We got back through the terminal security and to our tender. There were 3 ships "in port" today, so it was a lot of people in the port area. On the ride back, my 6 year old threw up on the tender as people were leaving (sorry y'all, we made sure to clean it up). He was just too hot I think.

We made it back on the ship, and went to the Build-A-Bear they were doing. He was happy so that's all I cared about.

From there we went to dinner, then pictures. After that we went to the playlist show of "America Rocks". It was a great show and much better than the country one or 88 Keys. After that, we went to our cabin to get ready for bed. Tomorrow was another early port.

Thursday, May 24th - Cozumel, Mexico

Last night was pretty rough. This morning is no better. We sailed through Tropical Storm Alberto and it was now pouring over Cozumel. We had booked through Mr. Sancho's to spend the day there but with the rain, we decided to skip that. We slept in, and eventually got off the ship to shop a little in port. After we bought $147 worth of rum cakes and vanilla we went to Three Amigos for lunch. It was decent food. I can't believe they didn't have beef tacos though. Get it together Mexico!

This was a pretty meh day due to the rain. We just hung out around the ship once we got back on board. After dinner though, both kids stayed in the room while mom and I had a night out. We went to the casino and comedy club. The comedy club was good, the first comedian was funny but the second, not so much. The sad thing is he was from Greensboro so he represented our home not so great. From there, we had pizza then went to the cabin to crash.

Friday, May 25th - Day at sea

This was our last day so we slept until around 10a. We got up and explored the "secret decks" on the ship, and just lounged around the ship, shopped a little, watched a few things going on in the atrium until dinner.

After dinner we went to the Lip Sync Battle which was one of the best shows I have seen on a cruise ship, seriously.

After that we went to the atrium for the balloon drop. My son loved it. We then hung out for a while before packing up to leave tomorrow. :(

I did go do laundry first because we still had more days of vacation ahead of us!

20180524_152634-1024x576.jpg

After that we were all packed, ready to go. *sniff sniff*

Saturday, May 26th - Debarkation

Debarkation went very smoothly. We met in the showtime theater at 7:45 and was off promptly from there. We made it into the terminal, found our luggage and out we went. We used Cortrans to take us back to MCO ($80) where we would catch an Uber to International Drive in Orlando where we'd begin another 4 day vacation there. (That's on my blog, I won't waste space here about it)

In closing, final thoughts

I had started a meet & mingle here on CC and we had enough people to make it happen. However it was scheduled for 5p on the second elegant night. I talked to 1 person who showed up and she said there were 5 people show up to it. On our social media roll call, there were 526 people and even the CD was talking about us on the cruise. The group there was much more lively and fun and everyone got to know each other.

The cruise director Cookie is by far the best cruise director ever. He doesn't have the reputation yet since he's new but in the future I would book a cruise based on where he is rather than the ports/ship. He was simply amazing.

20180520_194522-300x225.jpg

Pixels - When I first went to "claim" my pictures in the beginning (which they don't print on the Magic until the end) they told me there was a limit of 50 prints. I told them no, I had purchased the original package where I got ALL of my prints and digitals. I showed them the screenshot from John Heald on Facebook and they made a note of it. In the end, I had 175 prints as well as digitals.

Thanks for taking the time to read my condensed review and thank you more if you visited my blog to read the comprehensive review (and post-cruise). We had a lot of fun on this trip and we're not sailing again until July. We'll be on the Conquest then back on the Magic. I'll do more reviews then. Till then, ciao ciao!

So jealous you got to cuddle with a sloth!!!

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't an amazing experience. It's something I've always wanted to do. In fact we didn't go to Little French Key with our friends for the sole reason of I wanted to hold a sloth. If you go to Roatan this is a MUST!

I love the review- thanks for writing it up. It looks like you and your family had a wonderful time. Our Magic cruise is less than three weeks away (Eastern, though). I really appreciate that you posted the review all at once instead of making us wait for tons of installments. I'll go check out the blog too though!

I'm really glad the muster drills are indoors now, and good to know about the S&S cards being outside the room. We just cruised in October from Charleston but neither of these were in place then- at least not on the Ecstasy.

Great review! We got married on the Magic last year and went again in April. Cookie was the best! The Magic is moving to Ft Lauderdale which is a bummer for us since we live next to Port Canaveral

Great review! We will be on Magic this Saturday. I read along on your blog and noticed that you guys live near Roanoke. That's my hometown, so it made me a bit homesick, even though I've been gone a long time. What a great area!

Can I ask- we have a tour on Roatan through Victor Boddin and wondered what will be an appropriate tip for our driver? We are just trying to plan cash and wondered what to expect. Thanks again for the great review!

Small world! I grew up in Roanoke then Botetourt County before moving down here with my wife 15 years ago.

We're a family of 4 as mentioned with 2 kids and we just had them drive us around for the day. Since it was a private driver, I gave him $20 + bought his lunch so around $30 total I'd say. Normally I just tip $20 and buy their lunch.

Thanks for reading my review! I love doing reviews. They're almost as much as planning since I get to mentally relive the vacay. ;)

(BTW looking at your screen name I am guessing you're a UScar fan? My little cousin graduated from there. Most of my family lives in the Greer/Spartanburg area. I myself went to Carolina. I'm a Tar Heel. :)

Excellent review! Very informative too:)

I loved the Magic when we sailed on her a few years back. Can’t wait to return in two years.

I might have to surprise my daughter with the Sloth visit. She would go crazy for that! How early did you guys get there to beat the “cruise traffic”?

As soon as we got off of the ship (once the all clear was given), we walked straight to Rony's (maybe 10 minutes from ship to car?) and from there went straight there. We were the first Carnival ship at Mahogany Bay that morning. There was another (NCL??) ship at Coxen Hole but I am not sure if they arrived before, or after us.

Thanks for the comments!

Thanks for posting your story. We’ll be on the Magic on June 16th

Don’t want to stir the pot but not big fans of jeans and shorts on elegant night. I wish people made more of an effort . I’ll stop there
