We've done Olivia cruises and love the experience, but find we can get much more for our dollar on regular cruises. We've been together 9 years and love to cruise. We've never had a bad cruise experience, but would enjoy more "like-minded" company to share the adventures with from time to time. We usually plan at least one cruise a year and we'd love to be in contact with other women who regularly schedule "non-lesbian only" cruises.
Out next cruise is 2/25/07 on the Island Princess to Hawaii.
If you're out there, let us know. We can share experiences and potentially plan something together.
Guys...you're not excluded. We'd love to know of you're going to be on any future cruises so we can meet.
We just learned about FOD on our last cruise. Didn't know it existed prior to that.
Good sailing!

Hi,

My partner and I like to cruise too. We did 3 Princess cruises in the last two years and our next cruise is Olivia's Mexican Riviera in Oct. 2007. I was on 3 Olivia cruises back in the 90's but my partner has never been on one yet. Now that I've gone on Princess I want to compare it to today's Olivia cruises.

Hi Gator,

Thanks for the reply. Olivia's Mexican Riveria with Lily Tomlin sounds great! Let us know if you think it was worth the extra dollars. We'll be cruising to Hawaii on Princess this year at the same approximate time as your Mexico Cruise. We're considering the 2008 Olivia river cruise on the Danube. My heritage is Germanic, so I'm fasinated by the idea...but I'm always conscious of the cost of Olivia verus "regular" cruises to the same place.
Do you mind if I add you to my "buddy list" on Cruise Critic so we can say i touch?

I will be interested in hearing about the worth of the Olivia cruise as well. My partner and I just discovered cruises and love them, but the Olivia cruise sure seems expensive. We went on Carnival in November and are going on Princess in June to Alaska. We are also considering aHawaii cruise sometime in the future. Let me know how you enjoy your cruise as well. Thanks!

I also have wanted to try an Olivia cruise, but feel the same way about the cost. We can take 2 or 3 non gay cruises for the price of an Olivia cruise. The only cruise we have booked right now is the Carnival Conquest out of Galveston, TX in Sept. 2007.

My partner and I are also interested in Olivia cruises as well...but find them so expensive. We got engaged on the Norwegian Sun 10/05...had a quick getaway on the Explorer of the Seas 9/06...and will be on Adventure of the Seas for our honeymoon this August....(Yay Jersey!!). Our next adventure appears to be a European cruise in 2008...or Hawaii...that one we haven't decided yet. We only know we'll be on a ship going somewhere!! Question: has anyone sailed on AOS and what did they think...and secondly, other than the comfort and freedom to express yourself completely...how does Olivia rank next to, say, Royal Caribbean? Just curious to hear your answers. Thanks!!

Hi Jay and T,

I've sailed RC twice (Caribbean and Mexican Riv.). I thought their service was great. Since Olivia uses Holland America a lot for their cruises, I can say that the only difference I can see is the comfort of being around all lesbians and the specialized entertainment for us.
I was actually on the very first cruise that Olivia did with HAL, and the crew, although somewhat tentative at first, ended up really enjoying themselves. There was a big "Thank You" at the end, and it was very sincere.
I just looked at the price difference for Olivia's Danube River Cruise in 2008 and compared it to the normal price for Viking. It was $1,000 a person higher.
You have to weigh just how much the specialized "Olivia" experience means to you (especially during a anniversary, etc.) compared to a regular cruise environment.
My partner and I will be celebrating our 9th year together and our 4th anniversary on our upcoming cruise to Hawaii.(We we're married in Portland during the few weeks that it was allowed.) Since it's a fairly expensive trip, we opted to go with Princess and book a Vista Suite for the 15 days. The price is comparable to a suite on a 7 day cruise with Olivia. Hope this helps a little.

I'd like to hear what you think of Carnival when you return. I thought it might be too much of a "straight party" ship, but I have nothing to base that on. let me know.
By the way, my partner and I are in Northern Idaho (kinda far from most port cities with the exception of Seattle). Anyone else from around this area?

Hi Funlady,

We're considering a Princess cruise to Alaska in June as well. We we're there with Olivia back in 2001. We're thinking about the Sun Princess on 6/10/07 that circles out of Seattle and back so we can just drive over and save on any airfare. Which cruise are you booked on?
I'll be sure and let you know what we think of our Hawaii cruise as soon as we return.

Hey there Mithryl,

Thanks for your response...I guess you're right...I think it's a pros and cons game when it comes to vacationing...value versus comfort etc. It's a tough call, I think. For our honeymoon we had tossed around the idea of an Olivia cruise...or something Olivia...but then we got this hairbrained idea to invite our families along with us. We've been together a little while...and thought since we're so fortunate to have a wonderful family that loves and supports us, we figured we'd keep the party going and bring them with us. My mom thinks we're absolutely nuts for doing this...but she was the first one to buy her ticket!!! We'd also love to check out RFamilyVacation cruises...that way everyone is included. I hope one day to not even have to discuss this...and that it will just be what it is...and no one will turn their head. I keep hoping. Hey...congratulations on your years together...that's fantastic!! Two of our sponsors in our wedding (it's a Filipino ceremony) have been together for nine years...and they are truly an inspiration. They also happen to be our cruising buddies...but we wish you many more wonderful and happy years together. We look forward to getting there ourselves!

Hi Mithryl, We are going on the Golden out of Seattle on 6/16/07. It's my college roomate's big birthday and she is going to join us. Wish you all would come on our cruise . Picked this one because of work schedules and we have some frequent flyer miles with Southwest that will cover airfare.

Hello Ladies,

My sweetheart and I have only been on one cruise (Adventure of the Seas-South Caribbean), but are booked for a Baltic Cruise on August of this year. We are really excited about our upcoming cruise. Although we usually like to travel independently and on land, we are finding cruising more and more attractive. We are truly in love with Europe, so we try to go there as often as possible.

Let me introduce us. We are 52 and 49 years old, and live in New Jersey (although I grew up in New York). We both work in New York, and communte every day. Traveling has become a passion for us both, so on our daily commute to and from work, we enjoy discussing our upcoming adventure, or the one we want to do next year. We love exploring new places, so our August trip to Scandinavia and Russia is just up our alley. If we could choose a place to live in it would be Italy. Simply love the country.

We have considered an Olivia cruise, but in the early years they chartered really old and awful ships, at ridiculous prices, so we were somewhat turned us off. Now that the ships are much better we would seriouosly consider going on one of their cruises. We have no problem with going on a straight cruise, if the itinerary is right, the ship is good and the price is right.

J and T congrats on your upcoming marriage. I see you're from New Jersey, whereabouts? By the way, Adventure of the Seas is a really comfortable ship. Although it holds 3,000 or so people, we never felt crowded. The fitness center was very nice, and we put it to good use (did not want to feel too guilty what with all the food we were eating). The food was ok, not terrific, but not awful either, although the service at the main dinning room was really great. We did not see any obvious gay couples, but then again we were really not looking, since we took my mom and stepdad as a present for mothers day, and spent most of our time with them. The room was a nice size. We had a really good time in the ship.

This is a nice thread. Let's keep it going.

I was killing time checking out the boards and stumbled on to this thread. My better half and I just got back from a cruise on RC out of Baltimore. We chose that cruise due to the fact we could drive to the port. We had a great time with everyone we met. In fact so much so we are going again with the same bunch next October. We looked in to an Olivia cruise but got scared away by the price. It didn't seem important enough to be with "our kind" when we could go on a RC alot cheaper. We had no problems on our last cruise and are really looking forward to doing it again. Sure, we got some looks but we get that everywhere we go.

Hi Luv2Travel,

We're from Monmouth County...by the shore. My partner is also from New York...swore she'd never be a Jersey Girl...but here she is!! She used to tell people that she was born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens and suffering on Long Island. LOL She still swears she's not a Jersey Girl...but she has gotten some pride in her residence since they passed the Civil Union Bill...and of course the fact that New York voted it down was a big disappointment for her. I'm from Virginia but have been a Jersey resident for the past 11 years. We are excited about AOS...having sailed EOS in September out of Bayonne. Our family and friends will be joining us on the honeymoon and none of them have been on this ship either. We had heard some negative reviews about leaving out of San Juan and though we're firm believers in judging for ourselves, we were curious what others thought of the cruise. I'm glad to hear it was a positive experience for you. Where in Jersey are you two from? We're hoping to sail on the Dawn at some point as well...it's an easy trip up the highway for us....and next year we're planning a European cruise possibly leaving out of Spain. Thanks for the congrats....we're so excited about this....and it's icing on the cake to be cruising right after!!

Hey Jay & T, what dates were you on the Explorer? My partner and I were there for the Sept 8th cruise and met some other awesome couples who we have stayed in touch with and have visited with!

Hi Spikeya4,
Thanks you everyone for their responses. Looks like lots of couples from the east coast. Although we're landlocked in Idaho, it's great to see there are other lesbian couples out there who love cruising. We'd love to do a fall cruise from the east coast up to Canada and/or any European cruises. Id love to see Italy, Greece, Germany, etc. We haven't done any trips to Europe yet, but would love recommendations as to your favorite cruises, ports, etc.
We mainly try to leave from west coast ports, but are open to anything that other lesbian couples recommend. It's a small world and getting smaller all the time. Thanks for participating in this thread. I hope it continues to grow. I know there are many of us out there and it's great to start connecting!

Hey Spikeya4!!

We were on the 9/17-9/22 Bermuda cruise. It looks like we missed ya by two cruises!! We traveled with our two friends...another lesbian couple on both cruises...even attended a few FOD meetings and haven't met anyone...there really wasn't a big showing. Actually, we did meet two women on our Norwegian Sun trip traveling together...they were straight vacation buddies...we hung out with them alot and really enjoyed their company....we got an email from one of them about 9 months later and she had met, fallen in love and moved in with a women! We thought it was great!! But other than that, we haven't had the pleasure of meeting anyone else. My partner is pretty outgoing...I'm generally the shy one but we just haven't been in the right place at the right time, I guess. Who knows? Perhaps on AOS it'll be different. Either way, I'm counting the days until we leave!!

How rude of me. I should have introduced myself before I butted in on your thread. My better half and I are 45 and 43 and as you can see we are from Maryland. We have been together for 13 years and raised twins who have since left the nest. Time to vacation. We took our first cruise together last October.Prior to that we traveled by plane around the world. I guess once you've cruised you must continue. It's nice to see that so many other women feel the same. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Hi all, what a breath of fresh air to have our own thread. My name is Terri and live in NC. Currently I am single , and am going on the AOS next week! I will be traveling with my best friend, my sister. My previous partner and I have sailed together on different lines with our best friends. I never had a problem being on a "straight" ship. Like others have posted, I just don's see the need to travel with my sisters on Olvia for the price they are asking.

I will be posting live from the AOS, starting on 1-28, so if you have any questions, fire away. If you prefer not having the cyber world looking at the questions, you can e-mail me at "[email protected]

Happy sailing to all of my sisters

Hi all. Great thread. My partner and I both in our 40's sailed Carnival in Dec 06. We only met one other queer person on board but there was 8 of us together so we had a blast. We danced together on the dance floor and all the straight people didn't bat an eye. I requested a FOD party and got one.

We are now booked for Carnival Miracle Jan 2, 08 to Costa Rica. I am so excited. I would love to try Olivia one day but for now the price is better on Carnival, and I hear the Miracle is beautiful. If anyone is joining us let us know.
cheers,
Paddy Anne (from Toronto)
