No Gambling in Bermuda may prevent Breakaway sailings

I am cruising to Bermuda in late April on the Star but I feel this may be my last booking for the Bermuda itinerary. I really want to sail on the Breakaway but if Bermuda doesn't get on board with allowing the ships to gamble when in port, I will do the Caribbean ports instead.

We pay good money for our cruises but can't even use the all the amenities of the ship. Every time the cruise line puts this up to Bermuda, they vote it down. Some cruise lines have already taken Bermuda out of their cruise destinations. Everyone looses. The cruise lines loose money, the passengers loose and Bermuda gains nothing.

Maybe the ship should leave port and cruise outside Bermuda to open the Casino then re-dock. ( I know, it will cost more to re-dock 3 times)

I wish the Breakaway chose the Bahamas itinerary instead. Or only do one stop in Bermuda then head to Great Stirrup Cay and another port in the Caribbean.

This way the Casino can open every night.

If anyone knows a website that we passengers can let Bermuda know how we feel, please pass it on. Sorry, just venting. This has been something that has been bothering me for quite sometime now.

In addition to the 7 day cruises to Bermuda, the Breakaway will be doing 7 day cruises round trip from NYC to Nassau, Great Stirrup Cay and Port Canaveral.

I am not a big gambler so I would not know this. If this is true, I am shocked that NCL would dock a ship for 3 days with no casino. The casino is a huge money maker for any cruise line. If this is true, someone at NCL screwed up big time not thinking of this.

I cant remember but isnt the casino closed on most port days anyway?

We have never been able to gamble while in port on any of our previous cruises. I believe the casino and on board shops are all closed while in port. On carnival they closed 2 hours before docking and were closed until 2 hours after leaving the port. I've never found it to be a problem, as I get off the ship when it docks and get back on when its leaving. Then its nap time. I'm not sure why this is an issue?

The casino is closed in port. However, on the other itineraries, the ship is moving in the evenings/overnight - so the casino can then re-open for that time between ports.

Since my DH and I don't really go to shows, etc. - we do enjoy the casino. It's the one thing that stops us from booking the Bermuda run. We're not into the overnight stay as it is - and since we wouldn't have the casino on those nights, it's definitely a no-go itinerary for us.

We simply use other itineraries. It would be nice to stop in Bermuda for a day though. But, it is what it is.

Actually, the passengers probably lose less . . . . :p

NCL and Bermuda have a long-term agreement: link. I imagine that before entering into that agreement, NCL took into account the loss of casino profits. Obviously none of us are privy to specific details, but Bermuda probably made it worth NCL's while.

Its pretty sad when someones vacation is effected because they can't gamble for a few days............maybe I just don't get it. Then again I drive by homeless ex gamblers a few times a week:D:rolleyes:

Looking at the NCL website and getting a bit confused . Moving forward, other than the Breakaway which other ship will be doing that itinerary:eek:. I'm sure they won't be having 3.

Anyone heard anything?

thanks:D

People cruise for different reasons and find different things important. That's why there is variety. :)

There are a lot of things discussed here as "deal breakers" that I would never even consider as part of my cruise plans (casino, booze policy, bathroom layout, brand of soda served, etc.). However, I'll be hard pressed to take a cruise that requires me to dress up again. :)

Its not about the gambling so much but more of the atmosphere. We pay good money to use the cruise ships amenities but when one of the major ones is not allowed for 3 of the 7 days, it is a loss.

My issue with Bermuda is most passengers are on the ship at night anyway. Bermuda is not loosing any of its tourist money. It is another venue for the passengers to hang out in, mingle and gamble if they like. If Bermuda allowed the casino to be open from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, what would be the harm.

I do like to play but there many times I enjoy just watching others play. Again, it is something that we pay for and is included in the cruise. It is easy to just take a different cruise to other ports but it is an issue that should be able to be addressed.

All good points. And some may not even be deal breakers but worth consideration in the pros and cons when it comes to choices.

I know I personally take tons of things into consideration when I plan on any large expenditure such as a vacation.

It has been addressed, several times.

Bermuda does not wish to allow casinos to operate in their country. They've cited both morality and the concern that cruise pax will stay on board in the evenings instead of spending money on land. The latter concern is reasonable; since the ship docks overnight, many passengers do stay on shore for dinner and entertainment.

As another poster mentioned, the casino time you miss out on during those two overnights is more than made up for during sea days, which would be port days on other itineraries.

I agree that the casino should be open at night, I disagree that it something you paid for or something that is included in the price you paid.

At no time are guests told that 7the nights of casino are included. They didn't charge you for something and then not deliver.

I don't intend on going to Bermuda (for my own reasons) and respect their right to make their own rules but I did want to address this statement.

As someone who enjoys to gamble on land and at sea. No, those overnights may not necessarily be made up during sea days.

As stated by someone else, you will probably be back on the ship in the evenings. If you are not a person that enjoys stage shows or the bar scene but enjoys time in the casino as your nightly entertainment, it has nothing to do with "more than made up for". It has to do with thats what you enjoy to do in the evenings.

Honestly, this is the way it has been for decades with cruises to Bermuda and do not see it changing. I am a gambler and it would be nice to gamble at night while in port but it is not a deal breaker; as others have posted you have plenty of sea days and nights on that itinerary. And believe it if the cruise line thought this was cutting into its bottom line they would stop doing Bermuda as a port.

2 cruise lines have already removed Bermuda from its itinerary.

Its a matter of choice. Some like the shows, some like the dance clubs. Some like smoking cigars on deck at night, some like hanging in the casino. Some like eating at speciality restaurants, some like the MDR.

Its what we like. Cruises have always had formal nights, I remember bringing a tux on the ship........thank goodness for Freestyle.

My point is just because it has always been done that way, does not mean it shouldn't change. Change is good as we all know because we all love Freestyling. BERMUDA is messing with our free styling LOL.

Because the Bermuda cruise sits in the dock for three days not 8 hours like most other destinations. While it may not impact some folks, there is a segment of the potential market they are losing as some people that will not take a Bermuda cruise because of this. The fact that the cruise lines keep pushing Bermuda to vote on it is a good indicator that they are feeling the pressure.
