Hi

Wanting to hear from expereinced cruisers - which side do people think would be best to the book for the Athens to Dubai cruise? We have a balcony and want to maximise the view.

Thanks to all

When you get to the Gulf of Aden you will be on 'Pirate Watch' so you will not be using your balcony and the banks are more distant here. This is only for about 6 days or so.

During the transit of the Suez it is fairly boring, lots of sand either side, dotted by camps, guard towers & heavily armed protection forces, so side does not really matter. It also depends on the time you do the transit & your position in the convoy. When we did it we had to be at a mustering point off Port Said by 7pm. Our transit started about 10.30pm. We arrived at the Great Bitter Lake early morning, so wasn't much to see in the dark. We started the 2nd leg at about 1pm and we were at the beginning of the convoy, although again not a huge lot to look at. About 30 minutes of watching the banks saw me done. Depends if it particularly interests you. The initial passage may be more interesting if you do this during day light hours.

Others may have more info. Hope this helps.

As Ann mentioned the best place in the front of deck 11. If it's too hot for you the Living Room is a good substitute. I've found that trying to optimize which side to book does not really work since you'll be away from land for most of the trip and the captains seem to randomly choose which side of the ship to dock

.

Additionally the blackout period is only at night, and on our last crossing was only for 4 days. It is very interesting to watch the " specialists " get on and off the ship in international waters and the large amount of " equipment " that is in the boxes they bring.
