We are on Marina at the moment and I wrote on my half cruise comments sheet that I was disappointed that hardly anyone uses hand sanitizers, public areas or wipes (in the gym).On all the other cruise lines that we have been on,there is always a member of staff prompting people to do so.I was told that this company treats adults like adults and expects them to do it themselves.Well clearly they are not.Now what?? No salt and pepper pots, paper menus etc etc..and people still not taking any precautions that may have some effect.

I hate to hear about that, exactly what are you saying.

You can't control other people but you can lessen your chances of getting sick.

Hand sanitizer is useless against viruses so it won't help if there is noro-virus or flu or even colds on a cruise or anywhere else.

Wash your hands often and hope that the people that are preparing your food wash theirs.

At the gym I never depend on others to wipe equipment. I do it before and after I use it. Not because it will prevent illness but because I don't like other people's sweat.

Ok, you get the virus by putting it in your mouth or nose. So wash your hands and then use a napkin to touch any service items, chairs, etc. Don't eat with your hands, always use forks, etc to eat even a sandwich, fries, etc. Those things are under your control. Maybe that is what the other passengers are doing that you are worried about. I hate the sanitizers and always wash my hands before going to eat, so I would look like the unwashed masses too. If I am forced to put the sanitiier on my hands, I like to go wash it off as soon as possible. JMHO to give you a different opinion.

Just come off Sirena and there were continual announcements re hand hygiene and most people sanitised before eating. Oceania pays huge attention to hygiene. Every table was cleaned and mats replaced before next people sat down amongst many other precautions.

Level 2 here now.No Trivia, card, board games etc.No main computer use.Executive lounge and concierge lounge closed for any snacks or hot drinks. No tables set at any restaurants until you are seated.Suddenly two sanitizer dispensers at every entrance.People confined to cabins, even if one is sick.Im not worried it’s good to be careful at last.

We had similar situation on Marina in 2015. We were turned off by the way the staff communicated precautions, threatened to take drastic steps, such as closing self serve laundries, then after several days of threatening did so, even though they admitted fewer people were ill every day. Turned us sour on Oceania and we stayed away from them for over two years. Now back for a few cruises...we will see. One thing Oceania has going for it when these things happen is that guests already are served by staff in buffet, so fewer changes in food service procedures are required when noro virus situations arise.

Been there done that, no fun for me, but I’m a worrier.

Where is the Marina?

We are in South Pacific.Just left Pitcairn island.Strangely islanders were brought onto ship and had their wares to sell, touched by everyone over and over again.

Total shutdown now for at least 5 days.We are on sea days at the moment. Waves is shut,Barristas is takeaway only.Dinners with staff cancelled, lounges emptied of food, drink, menus etc.Not sure about afternoon tea.

Thanks.

I do find it unbelievable that we cannot use a washing machine yet the casino is still open! All the machines are in use and all the tables are in use...

It is miserable eating in the evening. All the wonderful dining experience of Oceania gone,Just a cafe style set up.:(

I was in Riviera last November and I saw people using the hand sanitizer when exiting the ship and again when they got to the bottom of the steps. A bit of over kill if you ask me. If you are that worried about germs, there are other issues at hand.

That is ridiculous. When we had this situation on HAL they closed the casinos along with the library. They did leave the shops open, though you had to use the sanitizer before entering. No food or bar venues were closed. Just no self serve of anything. Food or paper goods.

Do you mean a "cafe style setup" in Terrace? Is the GDR closed? That certainly would take away from the cruise

Jim & Stan, I found those polka dot gloves when packing up my mothers house last year. Had a Bonwit Teller tag on the inside, NYC, circa 1960. So elegant!
A great reminder of Mom. Will you be taking them with you on your up coming cruise being mindful of the motto and "Be Prepared", but with decorum.

All visits to Pitcairn from all ships, mean the islanders come to the Island. We experienced this, when we were there with Crystal.

Unfortunately many people avoid the hand sanitizer. When we were on the Sirena, the personal at the buffet served us themselves during 35 days cruise. Despite this, some passengers were touching food with their hands when they were impatient.

All restaurants are open.Terrace is same as usual with sanitation restrictions and paper condiments etc.

Grand dining room is open but last night was our first experience in there in the evening.

When you sit down, the table is totally empty.Cutlery delivered rolled in serviette. Then water glasses appear.Paper menus,no bread basket, packet butter and you are not allowed to do your own salt and pepper.

The food is still excellent but the ambience is gone.

Privee still open too.

All public toilets have main door left open.

Lifts have all exterior and interior knobs covered in sheet of plastic.Concierge and executive lounges sealed off.

No trivia but bingo still on.

We are ok with it.

I do have issues with germs James,as I’m a trained nurse, trained in cross infection and I worry for the frail, elderly and disabled. And that was before this outbreak.

This actually seems a little stricter than when we were on Riviera that actually had noro on board. Of course due to where they’re at and where they’re going it doesn’t have to be reported. General practices may have become more standardized since then, as they seemed to be flailing around and at a loss of what to do at that time.

When we were on the Marina departing from Valparaiso going up the western side of SA the procedures were very strict also.

I can understand how what you describe would change the ambience of the GDR. Necessary procedures, and glad to read they are taking precautions but it would affect your enjoyment. Good that you are rolling with it.

I'm not a germaphobe on the level of Howie Mandel but I've always struggled with picking up salt and shakers and chair armrests. Until I read of precautions taken on cruise ships I had never thought of handling a menu and admit it is now something that's on my mind. That said, when out in public we touch so many surfaces handled by so many people who may or may not be as concerned with personal cleanliness but we've survived with reasonable precautions.

Hope it ends on your cruise soon.
