Rome on Your Own? Tuscany Bus?

We are docking in Civitavecchia for a day next October and we have been to Rome several times. We simply want to transfer to Rome, spend a few hours in the area of the Pantheon, Trevi, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps......have lunch.......return to the ship.....ship is in port 7-7.

We prefer not to take the train and unless we can share, private transfer are too expensive. The cruise line offers a transfer to Rome which then allows you 5 hours on your own ($77pp). Tuscany Bus (?) offers departure at 9:30 outside port and return to port by 5:30. Know nothing about Tuscany bus so the cruise excursion might be a safer bet.

Both drop off at St. Peter's which is not where we want to be.

What would be the best way to get to/from our desired area? taxi, #64 bus? How long should it take?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Without knowing exact drop-off spot at Vatican (car park? San Pietro piazza?), it's difficult to say precisely.

With time of the essence, I'd probably suggest you just get a taxi from the rank just outside the colonnade around the piazza of San Pietro (to the right if facing the basilica....) and ask them to drop you at Piazza Navona. From there you can easily walk to the other destinations on your list, but you'll have to get back to your pickup point.

There is another taxi line just on the right side of the Pantheon, if needed for your return. Or if you are at the Spanish Steps, which would be the far end of your ramble, you could take the metro red line to the Ottaviano stop, which is closest to St. Peter's.

The problem with taking the buses is that the traffic in Rome combined with the many stops made by the bus often mean you could walk to a given point more quickly than riding there on the bus.

Just FYI, taking the train would probably allow you another couple of hours in Rome...

We have actually stayed at the Albergo del Senato adjacent to the Pantheon. Just hesitant about taking the train on a port day. Don't mind taking a taxi from and back to the bus drop off point which I believe is St. Peter's Square (although the fine print indicates if it is too crowded there the drop off alternate is .5 miles from there.) How long a taxi ride from St. Peters to Pantheon? Cost?

Wish there was some other option from Civitaveccia......we have been to Rome a bunch of times.

Thanks

do you mean another place to visit apart from Rome?

Tarquinia with ancient Etruscan tombs is interesting

I used Tuscany bus in July last year (family of 4) and they were no problem, very relaxing. We walked up to the Vatican took a few photos then found a taxi rank and from memory it was 10 euros to get to the colloseum and 10 minutes. All went well for us with no worries about if we would have a seat or air conditioning etc.
