Sydney: Great Ideas, Free, Fun, Active!

From the London/UK Guardian earlier this year, they had this headline: A local’s guide to Sydney with this sub-head: "Ringed by national parks and blessed with more than 100 beaches, the best bits of Sydney are outdoors, active and (mostly) free."

Here is more of their profile highlights: “ 'The best things about Sydney are free,” resident Russell Crowe has said. It is arguably the top metropolis on the planet for soaking up the scenery, but Sydneysiders don’t take these God-given gifts for granted. When they’re not out in the surf, swimming laps in an ocean pool, or sailing around the harbour, locals are barbecuing, picnicking, or finding other ways to enjoy the subtropical setting.

Lots of ideas and options, plus many pictures are in this story. Here is their comments on an area that we enjoyed visiting: "The Rocks precinct is a tourist attraction for good reason. The cobblestone laneways and sandstone buildings of Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood offer a glimpse into the lives of convicts, publicans, sailors and wharf labourers. Locals stick to the pubs, such as the Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel, built in the 1830s from convict-quarried sandstone. But for the best panoramas this side of the harbour, take the elevator to the Henry Deane rooftop bar in the reimagined Hotel Palisade and toast to the Harbour Bridge and the peak of Sydney Opera House shimmering back at you."

Nice story that brings back wonderful memories from our visiting to charming and scenic Sydney.

From Bondi Beach in Sydney, here is an example of one picture contained in this UK Guardian newspaper profile of this fun Australia city. Isn't this a great visual? Second is one of their story visuals of the Blue Mountains near Sydney.:

Thanks for posting, Terry. We'll be there in October and always look for new ideas.

How much time, Diane, will you have in Sydney? That's always a major challenge for this great city. So much to see and do there. BUT, never enough time and money to enjoy it "ALL"!! Don't be shy in asking your follow-up questions.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

AFRICA?!!?: Lots of interesting, dramatic pictures can be seen from this live/blog at:

Hi Terry

It is our second time there. We did a bunch of the 'tourist' stuff last time but now making a point of doing things we didn't get to.

We are there for two full days at the beginning and one full day at the end (that's another story ... we had to change our departure date because our airline changed the flight times to before Princess guidelines). We have booked a tour at the Opera House. We plan on taking the ferry to Manly. And also to Parramatta (and train back). If you'll recall from previous conversations, DH tires easily and these should be great ways to spend the day with short strolls at each destination.

Don’t expect much out of the train trip back, not much to see on that trip, river cat both ways might be a better option.

Appreciate these fun and interesting comments and follow-ups. Great sharing!! Lots of debate and questions as to the "best city" in Australia, plus the options for urban exploring versus nature and countryside/shore areas. Australia has it ALL!!

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Not a problem. We'll just see how the day plays out and where we wander.

I love trains, in general, and also love (obviously) being on the water.

So I'm sure either would be fine.

You could always catch a bus to Bondi (the HOHO goes that way but so do heaps of ordinary Sydney buses) and do the Bondi to Coogee Cliff Walk? You can take your time.

  • 3 weeks later...

We disemebarked a cruise in Sydney, rented a car, and drove to Melbourne and then spent several days driving on the Great Ocean Road. It was spectacular. Dropped the car in Melbourne, flew back to Sydney. We started our trip by flying into Gold Coast Airport (near Bisbane), picking up a rental, and slowly making our way down to Sydney. Wonderful beaches.

DW was not feeling well for one day. She remained in the hotel. I took the train to the Blue Hills and then did the HOHO trip. It was a good day for me and DW had some peace and quiet. We love Sydney.

If you have hotel points, this is where to use them as hotels are expensive. We have stayed in several areas but the Rocks are our favourite location to stay.

Spend some time going about on the local ferries.

Bottom line for us is that we enjoyed Australia/Autralians so much that if we had to turn the clock back and emigrate to another country Australia would be at the top of that list.
