Hurricane irma....ugh

Recommended Posts

We lost our home, our cars and all our possessions in 2012 when Sandy hit New York. We disembarked from a TA on the Ruby Princess on Sunday to find that all flights to NY were canceled. We were stranded. We found rooms at a motel in Pompano Beach and had to stay until Thursday when we could get a flight home. The hurricane hit the next day. We have had several strong hurricanes hit Long Island in the past and had only minimal damage in our neighborhood, which is a seaside community,so we really weren't that concerned. Silly us. So the hurricane hit. Only a few shingles gone and lots of trees down. Than the storm surge, something that had never happened before in the 35yrs we lived in our home and we ended up with 5ft of water in our home. We were homeless and had to live with relatives for 6 months until our home was rebuilt. My point; it wasn't the hurricane itself it was the surge after the storm that turned our lives upside down.. Everyone needs to pay attention and be mineful when the weather person talks of surges. Just because the storm had passed it doesn't necessarily mean the danger is over. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by Irma.

I got to thinking about the people that chose to ride it out. If I did that I would put up the boards on the inside of the home. That way if glass breaks there is still something there to kind of keep the condtions out somewhat. I have have never seen anything like this and I don't live there.

latest update:

Weather Update – 09/10/17 – 7:00 PM (EDT)

All ships in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet are safe and positioned well away from the storm. Our guests on extended voyages are well taken care of and continuing to enjoy a great cruising experience.

Rest assured, our Fleet Operations Center will continue to work throughout the storm to ensure critical functions continue to run smoothly and we will provide you with updated news as we have more information. Forecasters expect the storm will exit the Florida area late Monday, into the early hours of Tuesday. We are in regular communication with the port authorities for updates on when the ports will reopen. At this time, PortMiami, Port Everglades, Port Canaveral and the Port of Tampa remain closed.

We are working on outreach and support for those islands already impacted. We have been in communication with officials in many of the Caribbean islands and have activated a plan to begin delivery of supplies on both an immediate and sustained, longer-term basis. These deliveries will be worked into ships’ cruise itineraries as part of our ongoing operations. And, as we await news of the full impact that Irma will have on Florida, we stand ready to provide support as needed to affected ports and communities. Carnival Corporation foundation is also beginning to evaluate the best channels for support in the Caribbean, as well as Florida (once the storm passes through the state).

Due to the storm, the following cruises have been cancelled:

Carnival Liberty – September 10

Carnival Paradise – September 11

For all canceled cruises, a full refund will be automatically processed, including Fly2Fun reservations, pre-purchased Carnival Adventures, Fun Shop purchases and beverage packages. The refund will be processed to your original form of payment.

Guests on Carnival Paradise's September 7 voyage will overnight in Cozumel this evening and depart at 2:00 PM tomorrow to make their way back to Tampa or Port Canaveral, depending on the availability of the Port in Tampa. If we are unable to debark in Tampa, the ship will proceed to Port Canaveral where she will dock on Wednesday. Guests may elect to be transferred to Tampa or the Orlando airport via motor coach or remain in the Port Canaveral area until we reposition the ship to the Port of Tampa next Saturday.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Our intentions are to operate the following cruises from South and Central Florida once the port reopens. Guests who choose to cancel, will automatically receive a future cruise credit in the amount paid. This will be automatically processed and you do not need to call us if you decide to not travel.

My flights with air Canada into Ft Lauderdale are cancelled for tomorrow as the airport is closed due to Hurricane Irma. They could get me on at 5.50 am for Ft Lauderdale Tuesday but what if there is no power, and the ships doesn't"t make it back to port by Tuesday ? I can't honestly see the Conquest getting back from Mexico by Tuesday given the hurricanes ?

These last minute decisions are difficult for those out of country .....I think Carnival should have just cancelled. Flying in for a 4 day cruise with one port is not appealing on rough seas and not worth the money to get to Florida for 4 days? Anne else feel the same ?

Ok but isn't the reason you board up the windows is to keep the glass from breaking if something should hit it? If it's boarded on the inside the glass would be broken. Not expecting Hugo we were not prepared and we had a couple of seals broken on our windows. Had we boarded them on the outside they would have been okay.

From the Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale newspaper) website (www.sun-sentinel.com):

8:40 p.m.; Airport, port and shelters:
Broward County officials hope to have Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport partially open for flights on Tuesday and Port Everglades ready to accept cruise ships on Wednesday.

County spokesman Ric Barrick said officials plan to inspect the airfield Monday and depending on the level of debris and damage, airlines could be allowed to reposition their planes to the airport to begin flights on Tuesday morning. However, that’s far from certain as officials are already aware of flooding on the western portion of the north runway that could delay the airport’s ability to bring planes into the airport.

Crews will also do an aerial survey of the port with the Broward Sheriff’s Office to check out the channels and to see if the port can bring in cruise ships currently scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, Barrick said.

The other reason for boarding outside is that the wind can't blow the board into your home because it's.....well, outside and larger than the window opening. If it's on the inside, it could be ripped loose by the wind and become a projectile inside the home, along with all of the now broken glass.

From the Broward County mayor's recent press conference thanks to the Sun-Sentinel website.

AIRPORT: The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will open Tuesday at 4 a.m., Sharief (the mayor) said.

PORT EVERGLADES: The port, which receives and distributes fuel to 12 counties, is being assessed for damage.

I noted that there was no mention in the article about the status of the return of cruise ships to Port Everglades.
