Gala evening questions

For a 7 nights cruise, which nights are the gala evenings?

Is the food better with free drinks for dinner on gala evenings?

Will it be acceptable for men to wear a suit with dressed shirt?

1. It varies, but usually second night and then another sea day but never the last night. Ask a restaurant manager when on board and they can tell you (although it can change).

2. Food usually better as one of them will be "Marco's menu". No free drinks (although there will be some bad wine and watered down spirits at the captain's welcome party on the first occasion).

3. Yes but must wear a tie. However the vast majority of men (95%) will be wearing a dinner jacket.

No set time for the night. In general on a sea night and many times second night of cruise or last night of cruise. Will never understand from a marketing point of view last night as limits the number of photo sales. Which is a large profit center for the lines. Dark suit with tie is fine. I have seen sports jackets with ties also.

We have never known a formal night to be the last night, unless you are talking about a 2/3 night cruise, when 1 of them will be formal. On a 7 night cruise as stated one will be the first sea day night (usually the 2nd night) ,and the 2nd one is normally the last sea day..but not the last night, unless the weather has been soo bad during the cruise that they have rescheldued it. I have known them move a formal night as very bad weather expected, but I personally have never ever had one on the last night, when you are packing to leave the ship the following morning.

A dark suit and tie/bow tie will be fine, but as stated the majority will be in dj's.

There is a possibility that the last night may be a formal night on a 2 night Cruise, but never on anything longer. Not on P&O anyway. It is, however, almost always on the 2nd night on ex U.K. Cruises and you can usually guess the others by looking at which days are Sea days and discounting the last day.

Sorry, forgot to answer the question re food. Formal nights always used to have an enhanced menu. Now only some of them do. The first formal night and last formal night are usually Marco Pierre White menus. Sometimes Chaines du Rotisserie menus can appear, but less frequently these days. Other formal nights are regular menus, which does rather negate the need for a formal night IMO.
