Shanghai Boashan to airport

Anyone go thru Shanghai Boashan port recently and can share wait time for new Chinese fingerprinting/photo/customs procedures? We were notified by Celebrity less than a week before our cruise that we need flights departing after 6pm the day we disembark to accommodate this! We booked our flights last year for 1:30 pm based on 7:30 am arrival and last minute changes cost too much. We are worried about the wait and traffic to airport in the morning! Leaving April 1. Thanks!

I haven’t gone from the port to the airport but have done PVG numerous times. Six hours is enough. Taxi takes not more than an hour. Custom is easy. Chinese has a bad habit going to the airport late so airlines are well prepared for the last minute rush.

We are getting on the ship on the day you depart. We have been told there will be delays to your disembarkation, so our embarkation will be delayed by a few hours. If the ship docks at 7am, surely you can approach them and explain that you have to leave by 10.30 at the latest. In the past, we have had to ask for permission to be amongst the first to disembark because of transfers to flights, and they have been really accommodating. Wishing you really good luck and an enjoyable cruise.

Tips to OP, flying home PVG (non-stop ??) to YVR - have a printout of your homebound flight(s) / itinerary to show to PRC border control/immigration and customs, for disembarkation in case you need to cut ahead of the queues (long lines) and running late with the ship docking, etc.

April 1st being a Sunday, traffic should be better than on a weekday - just make sure the taxi driver knows you are going to PVG (Pudong) Int'l Airport that most overseas travelers use; and, not the smaller but equally busy domestic airports for "internal" flights.

Getting to PVG 2.5 hours before departure would be good or 11 AM - but at 2 hours or 11:30 AM should still suffice, as we're driven by our local tour guide & driver after a morning of last minute sightseeing after our hotel breakfast; and, assured us that we are fine with just 2 hours to spare once on the curbside.

As you would most likely be checking luggage & ground agent will be checking passports, etc. - they will help you rush thru or get onto the fast track to speed thru immigration & custom, on your way to the departure terminal & gate. Early boarding start early, especially with jumbo/wide-bodied aircraft but they make good use of 2 or more doorways for F/J and Y class passengers ... last time we flew/transit thru, secondary security screening & passport checks were done just before boarding the plane in the jetway/corridors, beyond gate/ground staff.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just wanted to follow up and thank everyone for the intel. Just got back after missing my flight, not because of security but fog which delayed our arrival. Stayed an extra couple of days in Shanghai. FYI the security was about the same wait as other Chinese customs. Thanks again to those who shared!

You are welcomed and thank you for a post-visit followup.

How did you find PVG airport's facilities and their highway system, compared to the Americas ... :halo: Any surprises and unexpected ?
