Does Ncl have duty free shops on board?

I have never cruised NCL, only Royal and Carnival. I was reading NCL is American so they don't have duty free on board? Also does anyone know what cigarettes they sell? Thanks!

All the ships except PoA are registered in the Bahamas so are not American while the line has its headquarters in Florida so probably is. The laws applying to the PoA are totally diiferent to those applying to the rest of the ships.

Yes they have a very 'large' shop on board where you can buy alcohol and cigarettes that you get the last night to be taken off the ship which are "duty/tax free". I don't know how the prices compare to land prices nor to the prices you can buy 'over the counter' on the ship. They also sell a wide range of other goods; clothing, souvenirs, jewelry etc.

On the last cruise they had Marlborough splashed everywhere!!

In Europe if your itinerary doesn't leave the EU VAT area, tax is collected on purchases throughout the cruise. The onboard shops still remained closed in port, I believe, even though they are not duty-free. If I recall correctly, they don't open the liquor/tobacco shop on those cruises at all. But if you buy something in the gift shops while at sea on such a sailing, they collect tax on it.

To clarify the cigarettes may be taken back to the cabin at time of purchase, alcohol is held until the morning of disembarkation.

Also keep in mind that items purchased in the ship's store need to be declared on your Customs form. If you exceed your exemption you may be required to pay duty (duty free refers to being free from export duty from the country of manufacture).

Hi.

We will be sailing around Australia (Sydney to Singapore) in 2018 Does anyone know if we will be able to buy cigarettes on board this sailing?

Take great care going into Singapore. IF your last port before Singapore is in Malaysia then there is NO duty free concession on alcohol or cigarettes. (It may be true if you visit any port in Malaysia before Singapore)

Be careful about buying jewelry on board -- as in don't even think about not declaring it. We bought some for my wife a few years ago (on Carnival) and had to be escorted off the ship once we docked and to the Customs agent who proceeded to grill us on what we had bought and why. Then, we he realized we did not go over our exemption, he said, "Oh. Well. Have a nice day." Apparently, the cruise lines (Carnival, at least) informs the Customs people about what you bought. Lesson learned: if you want to buy jewelry, buy it on land in one of the ports.

Thank you for replying Mike. You must be going on the longer voyage than me next year. I'm not really looking for duty free prices (although that would be a bonus) just wondered if I could buy cigarettes on-board instead of looking for tobacco shop in Sydney. We're there for 3 nights before the cruise

We cruised Rome to Singapore and lots of people bought cigarettes and/or alcohol on/off the ship and were going to debark with it in Singapore. The previous port had been Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur) and when we had left there was a letter delivered to all staterooms stating the cost of taking alcohol/cigarettes into Singapore as there was no Duty Free Allowance going from Malaysia to Singapore. The cost was horrific. After discussions with the senior staff on board there was a decision made that people who had bought alcohol on board could cancel the purchase without penalty.

Unless you buy it on the last sea day. Then we just take it to our room.

We are meeting friends in Cochin and would like to take a couple of bottles of liquor off the ship with us to give to them. Do you think they would allow us to do that? We would have to buy it on board, due to the no liquor rule, and would be quite happy to pick it up the morning of arrival in Cochin. Would this be possible?

We are cruising NCL from Miami to Key West then to Cozumel. When will they open the shops on board?

Please don’t re-open threads that are almost five years old.  better to start a new thread.

in answer to your question, the shops will be open when the ship reaches international waters.  I’ve never done a Key West sailing, but I imagine they will go out to sea the first night.  Shops and casino usually open around 2 hours after Sailaway.

I agree, but how many times have you seen, "Did you do a search? There are a gazillion threads on this subject". None of which seem answer want you want answered.

Not for alcohol and cigarettes, which is why there are such strict rules on how much you can bring back. Not much -- 1 carton of cigarettes and 1 liter of alcohol.

Not true about Key West. Welcomed with open arms, smiles and very polite people. Tram ride and free bus are great. Enjoy Key West. Its a great place.

Also shops open when in international waters.
