MSC Opera, Havana Embarkation Day

For those of you who've sailed on the MSC Opera from Havana, how do you usually handle Embarkation Day? Check in and then leave the ship to explore Havana, or explore Havana, then check in? I know Day 2 is another full day in Cuba, but I'm wondering if Day 1 will allow for any sort of exploration off the ship. I will also post this on the Cuba boards. Thanks in advance.
