Keel Laid for Royal Caribbean's First Quantum Ultra Class Cruise Ship

It is the new Icon class ships that will run on LNG not the Quantum ultra.

Ken,

That´s correct. The only thing I wonder is why are they building the engine room section in Warnemünde at Neptun Werft. Meyer Werft had a big announcement that all LNG engine rooms are built at Neptun Werft (which is owned by Meyer Werft as well). Just a couple of weeks ago the first "half" of the AIDAnova engine room / keel part of the hull was finished and shipped through the Kiel Canal and on to Papenburg. The second half followed on later.

Here´s a press release by AIDA including a photo of the first segement. And another news report showing it in the Kiel Canal.

Neptun Werft built a new hall in summer 2017 especially for the engine room segments and started out with the AIDAnova. It was then reported that four engine room segments are built per year ("makes" two ships). And it was specifically mentioned that those segements have either LNG or fuel cell engines.

So for the Norwegian Bliss blocks were built at other locations as ususal but not half of the hull part with the engine room section. Engines were built in at Papenburg.

There was also an announcement by RCI that they are testing fuel cells (and they currently have one for testing) on an Oasis class ship and the new Quantum plus ships - that announcement was in March this year. Recently with the "SeaBeyond" announcements it was confirmed that the Oasis of the Seas is going to get a fuel cell engine (for producing engery for hotel operations) during the dry dock in 2019. There hasn´t been any confirmation that the Spectrum of the Seas and Quantum plus 2 (or Quantum 5) will get LNG engines. But I think that it´s now more likely with the engine room sections being built at Neptun Werft.

Interesting.

It does seem odd though that they have announced the LNG for Icon class as well as made announcements about the fuel cell technology that they would omit any mention of engine changes for Quantum Ultra class especially when the recent press release seemed so heavily focussed on technology. Then again sometimes there is no understanding Royal and their announcements or lack thereof.

  • 2 weeks later...
Runs on LNG. I think that's what makes it ultra.

Had a chat with the captain on the Anthem last month and as far as we can tell, there will not be much difference

Although the casino will be much larger for the Asian market - the speculation is it will take the ground floor of the Music Hall
