A few tips & feedback from Adventure, Canada/New England June 29/18 (Cape Liberty)

Recommended Posts

A fewobservations from our cruise. First andforemost, I do not profess to be a cruise expert…..for your reference: we are afamily of 4 (2 tween/teens) with a long list of travel but only a few cruises (1Carnival, Disney for another). Most ofmy “comparisons” will be to Disney (Caribbean out of Miami on Magic) as thatcruise was only 4 moths prior to this one.

I know someof these topics can be hot topics, please note these are only my opinions andobservations….they may not be the same as other people (and that's ok ;);)) but I am hoping they may helpothers as so many people have assisted me on these boards.

APDMOM hasposted an EXCELLENT review with pics of our cruise. I recommend reviewing it…..I won’t duplicate(or will try not to) but will try to add a few observations and comparisonsfrom a first time Royal Caribbean cruiser.

Adventure asa ship

Great ship –larger than Disney Magic we were on a few months ago but not so large wecouldn’t manage it. Lots of space and didn’t feel crowded. Overall it is clean and tidy although therewere a few corners where you could see “dirty” (think along the windows inWindjammer, floors in buffet area, carpet in common areas). Beautiful to walk aroundand I enjoyed looking at the little quiet areas, art and ship replicasthroughout the ship. Promenade was anice central spot and liked the design of the outside rec areas. Comparing to the “before” pics I have seen ofthe rooms and common areas it was nicely updated in dry dock earlier thisyear. Having the dining room on 3 levelsreduces some of the congestion on the stairs and at the door of the diningroom. (more on dining to follow.............)

We alsoloved the process of embarking & disembarking the ship – so quick and easy! From the first day through to each and every port everything ran smoothly – efficientand easy!

Staff

Overall friendly,A+. There are a few cranky folks but overall,we found the staff very helpful and friendly. The room attendant (Tudy) was friendly; we seldom saw her (3X total) butwe left the odd note for a laundry bag, pillows, etc and the requests werealways met before we made it back to the room. Our interactions were friendly and helpful.

Servers

We had Artan& Jovenito – in a word - wonderful. Helpful, friendly and engaging. Theyremembered our preferences and went above and beyond on the evenings we were inthe dining room. We did experience the“hard sell” others had mentioned about the ratings on the after-cruise surveybut I understand they are pushed to ask this so we just let it slide…frankly Iwas going to rate them a 10 anyway! They WORKED - seriously I couldn't believe how many tables they had to manage, and they did it all with a smile. Hands down, they were the best service on the ship.

My timedining

OK so Itotally misunderstood this until I read these awesome boards. I thought I could just show up any ol' time and get a table. ha ha ha ha - I quickly realized after the first night that the looooooooooooooooooong line at the door was people just like me that didn't make reservations (I had made for 3 nights, quickly fixed that after seeing the line and hearing people get upset.)

It is “my time” but you really need a reservation. You can even make it that day on board (or beforethe cruise online)….we did both. Peoplewalking up to get a “walk in” table were having varied measures of successdepending on group size. Some folksnoted waits +1hr at 6:30pm.

I am notsure of the system being used to seat folks on Deck 3 (My Time) but honestly itdoesn’t work. The lines seemed longwhether you had a reservation or not some nights. Weare on vacation so really, it doesn’t hurt to wait but for some folks (mobilityissues, etc) the standing and waiting was a bit of an inconvenience. In retrospect…..we would have just reviewedthe port times earlier and chosen the early dining time knowing that we couldmake it work most evenings. Tip: my personal suggestion would be to eitherchoose early/late dining time or make reservations for “My Time” every night. I wouldn't suggest just "showing up" and getting a table at peak times.

Hoping this is helpful to someone.............I will work on some comments for the rooms next.........

Would you mind if I changed the AOS in the title to Adventure, so that people seeing the list know which of Adventure, Allure, or Anthem is the subject of this thread?

thanks to Bob for fixing my thread! First time on here posting in detail so learning as I go (sorry about the spacing...something is wonky when I cut and paste into the boards)

Let's move onto our room. This is compiled from my kids and DH so we have a few viewpoints in here:

Room

We had 2 connecting Promenade rooms. The size was good and while there were lots of shelves/storage I would have to say Disney does this better. If you have ever been to a Disney hotel or ship you know – they are master’s at design for families.

In the big scheme of things this is minor but because Disney is so remarkable with the design (think storage, large tub/showers, bed configuration) I have to give Disney a big win in this category. J

(I must admit the weird closet & bathroom door set-up on Adventure is horrible, but again this is a minor design issue and really doesn’t impact the overall rating of the cruise!)

Note on Promenade room: I have read a myriad of reviews on these rooms. We found they were central (deck 7), window was nice to feel a bit more “open” but yes, you hear some noise. The one night a band had to move inside due to weather and it was LOUD. But it was 1 night, never went past 11pm and frankly….the kids & I still slept through it J (husband would not agree with this…he found it hard to sleep before 11pm).

Tip: we loved deck 7 for our room. It was central for dining, Café Promenade, easy access to everything. Pools/Solarium (adult pool area) and activities were a bit of a walk but not bad at all.

Laundry

There is no self-serve laundry on the ship but you can send things out for return the following day. We waited for the laundry special (day 5) and it was as discussed: put as much as you can in a (thin) plastic laundry back for$34.99. We managed to fit 51 items(yikes!) into the bag. You are allowed to put in shorts, pajamas, underwear, socks, t-shirt’s, swim wear – if you put in other things they will add regular charge to your bill.

The bag is approx. 20” tall, 12” wide. With careful folding you can fit a lot in here! It was returned the next afternoon to our room and everything looked great. I would do this again in a heartbeat.

Outlets

Again, I have read there are a few configurations of these in the rooms. We had 2 outlets by the mirror/desk. No USB on the light fixtures as in some rooms.

Hot water

Again, I read a few comments on this and will add my experience…….during busy shower periods (before dining times or immediately following final embarkation times on port days) there is low water pressure and hot water is limited.

Food – Sapphire (main dining room)

Oh goodness, I know this is a can of worms I shouldn’t open. But here I go:

It doesn’t rank to Disney. Honestly – Disney blows it away. Now that doesn’t mean it is “bad”– it isn’t…trust me we didn’t go hungry ;););):) but the variety of changing dining rooms nightly (on Disney), having different themes and no duplicates of food is refreshing and appeals to every taste. RC was good, but the menus became a bit repetitive each night. We realized after night #2 we probably should have done a dining package and tried the other restaurants…. we didn’t, and it was our loss. I think it would be just fine if you prearrange that variety (I take responsibility for not considering this earlier).

Summary:main dining room is just fine, food is good…just not “great” and the menu is somewhat repetitive. (Note: my husband insists that I put a comment in here about the steak :) Apparently the prime rib, etc is not the best cuts. Maybe it is just because we are from ranch country and are choosy about these things but he insists that others are warned that this is not fine Angus beef nor is it prepared like a good steakhouse. Take that as you wish ;)

Buffet

Disclaimer:I am a germ-a-phobe. Public food generally isn’t my thing, but my family does not necessarily feel the same way. The first day almost traumatized me – seriously we went around noon on embarkation day and it was disgusting. There was such a rush of people, so they couldn’t not enforce hand washing. People were reaching in (think the fries, cheese and buns) with their hands, others were eating while still in line and there was food all over the floor. That said, I got over my experience by day 3 and tried again…….it was marginally better.

Food was Ok, staff were super friendly/helpful finding seats and they cleaned tables quickly. Disney and Carnival seemed a little cleaner (buffet) and Disney enforced that EVERY single person entering all restaurants MUST use an anti-bac hand-wipe before entering. Disney wins a slight edge over food quality at the buffet but wins hands-down on cleanliness.

Note: handwashing stations at the entry of Windjammer are awesome! Convenient and easy! Just need more people to stop and actually use them.

Tip: we did the main dining room for lunch and sit-down breakfast a few days. It was fan-freaking-tastic! Think small buffet (more like pasta and salad stations) or a menu…..much quieter and friendly atmosphere than the buffet. It was awesome – totally recommend this vs Windjammer if you have time…..note they have very short breakfast & lunch hours but it is an alternative to buffet. (For me this was an option that didn't include fingers in the food, much better for germ-a-phobe's.)

Café Promenade

We ate here quite a lot due to location (only 2 floors below our room). It has a nice, quick selection and I prefer this manner of being “served” (handed items from a serving area) vs. the buffet. They offer chicken/veggie burritos, breakfast sandwiches, fruit, yogurt and a few other munchies for breakfast……lunch is pizza, salads, sandwiches and desserts for lunch and dinner.

Free coffee and tea is located here on the opposite side of the restaurant from Starbucks beverages. Starbucks bevy’s have a charge attached (if you do not have a bevy package), other tea/coffee is free. The selections are repetitive daily, but we found the food was pretty good.

Thanks everyone - I hope this is helpful! We are not seasoned cruisers and frankly there are some really good ideas and opinions on these boards......I really enjoyed reading all the info before we went on our little adventure. ;)

I will finish up with my final few categories:

Activities

No shortage here, for kids.....after 5pm. Maybe just the age of my kids but it seemed like most activities for them were after 5pm. Which is OK (and worked) but it is also during early dinner. Something to consider again when scheduling meals.

My kids LOVED the climbing wall (wasn’t that busy, perhaps due to the itinerary although apparently there were 1049 kids on board according to the “Behind the scenes” tour!).

I have seen a few questions on this: no helmets for rock climbing, didn’t see that it was an option or that they were available. Again, seems totally safe and my kids were there every.single.day…………

Flowrider –for reference I had a 12 and 15 year old who loved this. The staff is awesome, they coach new riders and encourage the kids. This is fun for all ages! Kids under 13 need to have an adult present so let's just say I spent alot of time at the aft....by the Flowrider and waterslide outlet. :)

Skating –there are public skating times. We did not partake in this but did go to take a look…..it fills up fast! If interested go early! Note, kids do wear helmets. For any who are squeamish of shared helmets (again, me J) this may be a “skip”.

Other activities included basketball (3-on-3) tourneys, soccer games, ping pong, mini-golf, plus of course the pools, trivia……no lack of things to do J

For adults, the Solarium was nice. I went to relax for an hour here and there and enjoyed the quiet adult area and nice pool chairs. It seemed spacious, cleaner than some other areas and always had a relaxed vibe. Note: again I saw alot of questions on this - the Solarium on this ship does not have a roof.

Quick note about pool and chair “hogs” – didn’t see it at all. RC wins this hands-down. Disney had towel splayed across chairs all day….this cruise (perhaps because of different itinerary?) never seemed crowed even on warm days. The process of checking towels in/out seems to hold people more accountable ad eliminates the abundance of towels piled on chairs everywhere.

Ports

We went to Portland, ME, Bar Harbor, Saint John and Halifax. Lots of posts on the ports (with pics, seriously check it out, some great photographers on here!) I won’t go into detail other than to compliment the tendering in Bar Harbor. I generally do not like tenders, but this was smooth – great docks, fabulous new/large tender ferries…..easy peasy!

If anyone is wondering what we did in ports this is a quick and dirty summary :D feel free to ask questions if I am too vague:

Portland - rented a car. Did LL Beam, other shopping, saw a few lighthouses and then walked around old port. Beautiful. Loved it.

Bar Harbor - loved, loved, loved this town. Got off the ship early, walked the "bar" to "Bar Island". Walked around Acadia (we did 10 miles walking this day, wouldn't be for some) then back to town to witness tide covering the bar.

Saint John - rented a car. Foggy but totally doable.....drove up to see the UNESCO Sea Caves at St Martin at low tide. Beautiful and worth the trip. There is a whole science lesson here on tides (lowest/highest in the world). Not that my kids wanted to learn..............

Halifax - rented a car, went to Peggy's cover then back to see sites of town. Loved it - worth the trip!

Overall my “complaints”are minor – let’s face it we were on vacation!!! The cruise was fun and spending time with family is the most important thing. That said if you are looking for an overall rating I would say Disney wins overall but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t go on RC again. Now that I clearly understand the dining options, etc I would simply supplement with a dining plan to open up a variety of food and pre-book my preference of dining time to avoid the reservation lines at My Time Dining.

My final tally is:

Cleanliness - I am giving Adventure of the Seas a B; lack of enforcement of handwashing, staff seeming a little laid back about non-gloved hands, sneezing when working buffet, etc just bump it down a tad.

Food - same as cleanliness but again, partially my fault. Had I really thought about all the menus I read on here I would have noticed the repetition and should have booked other dining.

Service - good, no complaints. Servers were wonderful.

Ports - got exactly what we were going for. Enjoyed the ports and found lots to do!

Having sailed on Disney multiple times as well as Royal, overall we like Royal better. Again, you have an opinion. I would strongly urge you to try the Oasis class, especially the Harmony or Symphony. The lack of specialty restaurants on Disney is a problem IMO. We enjoy them from Johnny Rockets through the others.

Disney regular staterooms IMO are great- love the split bathroom. However the negatives are too many children, no casino and overall while they do have some adult themed activities, best for families with very young children or Disney freaks- of which some of our adult family are! The entertainment is great on both ships- perhaps more variety on Oasis class ships. Over the years, the price for a Disney cruise has increased significantly, making it very expensive compared to most others.

While I understand your concern about cleanliness, the Disney Wonder was the only ship that my DH contacted norovirus- so the germs are still lurking on board.

It is great that we all have choices and share our experiences with fellow cruisers. We will be trying Oceania for the first time next summer, but have both Celebrity cruises (including the Edge) and one Royal before then. Thanks for sharing.

Hi do you mean going to Kennebunkport from Bar Harbor? Kennebunkport is a few hours away. We love Maine.

Yes we did our own thing in each port....we are comfortable driving in all the locations so we rented cars in Portland, Halifax and Saint John. Being Canadian we also appreciated the signs in KM when we got "home" to the Canadian ports ha ha ;)

Portland was easy to get around, we didn't do Kennebunkport but did the drive up to Freeport instead. Super easy to navigate.

Bar Harbor we just walked - didn't get a car or take a tour. That our phones/Fitbits had us around 10 miles for the day so we did put on alot of miles but we saw some beautiful sites in Acadia. This is the one port that surprised me completely - I literally thought we would be busy a few hours but it turned out we hiked and toured the entire day (first tender, 3rd last back). I loved the park and the trails, so beautiful (and we hike in Banff all the time so it takes some majestic views to "wow" me) ;):D

Halifax is simple if you have GPS but it does have bad traffic around the waterfront. I totally recommend the beautiful drive to Peggy's Cove but if you just want to see things around town I wouldn't bother with a car. You can spend more time sitting in traffic and looking for parking than it would take to walk from the ship. Small city so things are quite easy to find and distances easy to manage on foot (around the waterfront).

Saint John is easy to drive too. We were in line with 4 other families from the ship at Enterprise which was a 10 min walk from the ship. Most of us drove out to Fundy Trail and the Sea Caves. Self guided but easy to find your way around.

The one thing I would note is that if you don't take a ship tour there is always that pressure of getting back on time. We had all the distances figured out and I know that traffic can be slow from Peggy's Cove - Halifax and the Caves-Saint John so we allowed lots of time but it is something to be aware of (i.e. caves are only 50KM from Saint John.....should be 25-30 min drive on regular highways but the roads and traffic are slllllllllllllllllllow.......allow at least 1 hour).

I couldn't justify the price of the excursions for our family of 4 and I like to do our own thing so we went this route instead. The most expensive car rental we had was Portland (because it was in US$) at $65.....Halifax and Saint John were each around $55-60 Canadian. Book early though because the rate did seem to go up closer to the date (I check weekly just to make sure I get the lowest rate).

Interesting reading. We are taking this cruise in August and I've been wondering about the ports of call - whether to take an excursion or just explore on our own. We're from the UK and don't want to rent cars; just walk and soak up some local atmosphere. We've never cruised with Royal Caribbean before so are looking forward to it!

I would say all of the ports have interesting sites within walking distance. Bar Harbour in particular is extremely easy to walk.

It may be my proud Canadian side :) but I would totally recommend either seeing the tides in Saint John or Peggy's Cove in Halifax. Those would both require transportation but if renting a car isn't of interest (I get it, I feel the same way when I am in the UK! Completely understandable!!).......there are tour companies or cabs/Uber that will drive to the sites. I did not personally do this but others on our ship that we sat with and met around the pool did and had favourable reviews.

Have a wonderful trip!!!!

Lots of places!!! There seemed to be no shortage of restaurants or booths around the piers to get something.

Bar Harbor has oodles of restaurants, pubs and ice cream shops a very short walk away (we did Stewmans right on the water, really good)

Portland - lots of restaurants by old town, we didn't eat there (other than the donuts)

Halifax - lots of food booths and restaurants close to the pier (for a snack grab a Beavertail at "Beavertails" - deep fried pastry with toppings....cinnamon sugar is what we call original beavertails) :)

Saint John - we didn't eat in town but the cafe by the Sea Caves is good and has wonderful reviews if you do take a trip out there.
