NFL shown on ships last night?

I’ll bump this back to the first page. I know I was on Triumph the first week of the season last year and they were not able to pick up the Thursday night game in the sports bar. They had the college ESPN game though. Two years ago they did get the Thursday night nfl game. I’m just booking the last week of August now.

As you can see from, my screen name, I am a huge Giants fan. We are on the Pride, end of October, and I asked this question of the board here, if I will be able to watch games while on the cruise.

From the responses I got NO unless it is on a cable outlet (ESPN). Seems Carnival didn't pay their bill and are not showing any NFL games that are on broadcast TV, so any games on FOX, CBS or NBC won't be able to be viewed on the ship. At least that's the last word I heard about it.

Cheers

Len

You just made this up, Carnival did not pay their bill, seriously? The Masters was on CBS in April on the conquest. The sports bars can play anything they want. They removed the networks from the staterooms, as satellite commercial services pay per capacity.

All they showed on Dream last week was ESPN, ESPN2, and SEC Network. And I know the FB group had an event scheduled to watch Alabama/Louisville on ABC...it didn’t happen.

On Breeze in March...conf basketball tourney week I saw the RFP bartender flipping channels and the channels were ESPN, ESPN2, SECN, and FS1.

I also recall someone posting that during the World Cup they didn’t get the live games. They got the FS1 rebroadcasts.

The bars on the ship cannot show anything they want. For the NFL if you want to show games where alcohol is served you pay per game and per seat in the venue. It is not cheap either. If a bar wants the game they will pay dearly for it. On the last few sailings I have been on the bars have had a few ESPN channels and little else. In the rooms only Carnival barker channels and a small package from Spectrum (who bought Time/Warner Cable a couple of years ago.)

Pay per view is coming. The technology is on Horizon, but for reasons I don't understand (perhaps billing) it is not implemented. It might be because they are tweaking the internet pipe to make higher speeds available to guests and crew. TV from the satellite provider may come later.

Here is some positive news. A lady on the Breeze wrote JH complaining about SNF not being shown on Lido. Apparently it was shown in the casino and RFP last night. John said that will continue unless it’s the local team playing then they will show it on Lido. He mentioned they have MNF and daytime NFL games as well but didn’t give us any idea of which games.

Yesterday the Triumph showed the New Orleans/Tampa Bay game on the Lido screen and in the Sports Bar but not on the TV in the cabins. Now and then it would lose reception for a short time but the annoying part is that just when a big play would come up, the captain would make a long announcement and they would turn the TV off during the announcement.

The sports bar was jam packed and the Lido deck was so hot and sunny that it was torture to watch it there plus the picture was bad since it was so sunny. It would have been great if they had shown it in the showroom.

On the Valor 9/2 they just had espn in the sports bar. Personally, I didn't care but tennis and MBL were on and SEVERAL LSU fans were really ticked. They were told no ABC broadcast available. So, Im not sure about any game/channel they want as has been posted. Ive seen games Fox broadcast NFL several times in the past (even some in the room w an aft view. Not so much a few days ago on Valor.

Carnival no longer carries network channels. like many of the other cruise lines they have all dropped network channels and numerous other channels to save money. the reason you were able to watch the masters in april was because the ships have espn deportes and espn deportes has the rights to show the masters along with lots of other sporting events i will post below. they also have the rights to NFL but only monday night football, superbowl, pro bowl, and 1 wild card game.

They are somehow getting more than that because it's been reported that Sunday Night Football was televised...which is a NBC game. It was reported that the Saints noon game was televised..which was a Fox game.

Hopefully people will provide more feedback over the next few weeks on what NFL games are being shown on Carnival ships. I have cruises scheduled over Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. I am curious what NFL games will be available on board. I enjoy watching football on a cruise, but I would never give up cruising over the holidays even if no football of any kind was shown during the cruise.

We just got off of the Pride on Sunday. The Ravens were on in the Skybox Sports Bar on Thursday night. Only problem was they didn't have enough chairs to sit in. kept me from staying long, since I can't stand in one spot for long and I certainly won't hold a cold drink in my hand at the same time. They might make more on drinks if they would move chairs into the bar.

First week of NFL on the Horizon. Lots of football games.

Thursday (9/6) - game on in sports bar. Didn't check anywhere else. it was crowded

Sunday (9/9) - at least 3 games on in the sports bar. We didn't stay. 2 games on in the casino bar (no sound), 2 games on in the Pig & Anchor (with sound).

Monday (9/10) - both games on in the sports bar. Didn't check anywhere else.

No games on cabin TVs

Generally they would not change the games that were on - needed to call a "technician" but I understand completely because they can't put on ALL the games and someone would always be disappointed.

They probably could show anything Miami wants to pay for.

I was on the Vista 9/16-9/20... in the SkyBox sports bar they showed KC/PIT and MIA/NYJ at 1pm and JAX/NE at 4pm. They also showed the Sunday night and Monday night NFL games. It was packed in there and an awesome place to watch the games!

That’s interesting. No Fox games. All CBS day games....

Not sure about KC/PIT, but they would tend to show local teams (Florida). Once they paid for one channel. might as well just show whatever else they play.

John Heald made some mention that there would be an announcement coming regarding what NFL games would be shown this year. Maybe they have some kind of deal.

I hope so...ive cruised afew times during NFL season and its always a crap shoot as to what games you are going to get. Not even the bartenders know. I'm also a huge Eagles fan. I was told that (usually) the sports bars get the national game which would be Fox at 1pm and CBS at 4pm that is your only option. So we got to the sports bar over an hour early for the Eagles/Redskins game last year (knowing they where the national game). 1pm rolls around...no game...we waited about 10 mins and another game on so we went around the ship thinking making we could find it somewhere else. We came back 15mins after that and the sports bar had the game lol!! Complete crapshoot

I don’t know about a noon fox game being national. Usually the “game of the week” is a late game. Last year was a bit crazier than other years because that was when they got rid of the local channels. Prior to that it seemed like they got the Miami area games. What was reported on here for last Sunday mostly makes sense for Miami with the dolphins early and the patriots late. The only thing that doesn’t fit is that Steelers game. Miami wouldn’t have had two noon CBS games...they wouldn’t have had any noon games up against the local team. They would’ve had the dolphins at noon and the patriots at 3 along with a 3pm fox game. Maybe they have the ability to pick any three games they want....and they choose the local team (Miami) And then two teams with national interest (Pittsburgh, New England). I’d be interested to know how they do it. Of course the best bet is to not cruise on Sunday during football season.
