Kugel Posted February 16, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 16, 2018 my group is spending October 9th in Quebec and want to tour out on the island. Since it is Thanksgiving Day there does anyone know if restaurants in Quebec City will be closed. And shops also?
maryann ns Posted February 16, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 16, 2018 I presume you mean Ile D'Orleans? I would be surprised if places were closed. Canadian Thanksgiving is not quite such a big deal as the American one. It is a good day for locals to go for a day trip.
Rare martincath Posted February 16, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 16, 2018 That's not Thanksgiving - it's Monday 8th this year and Monday 14th next (always second Monday of October). Even if you mistyped the date and you are there on Thanksgiving, restos are never required to close (so very few do - I've yet to meet a single Canadian who actually has the big family dinner on the day itself rather than Fri/Sat/Sun since everyone has to be back at work on Tuesday as normal - the day itself is mostly a travel day) but retail stores in general have to either close or offer overtime pay. Touristy areas, with a cruise ship in town, it's worth staying open as extra profits from you guys offset extra wages. IIRC Quebec has some specific provincial rules that ensure small businesses can stay open, and anything deemed important to the public (e.g. pharmacies, food sales), so it would really only be a problem if you wanted to go hit big stores selling 'luxury' items rather than necessities like Best Buy.
