Hello,

Have never cruised from NY. All things equal (price, direct flight, etc) what is the best and/or easiest airport to fly into for a NY Cruise.

LaGuardia, JFK, or Newark?

We would probably arrive late morning, early afternoon. After the cruise, not sure but would guess a noonish flight.

Thanks in Advance.

More questions -
1) What ship and exact date?
2) What is your hotel budget (Manhattan hotels can be very pricey)
3) What do you want to see in Manhattan?

You need to balance time, money, and stress by picking the right airport and knowing your transportation and hotel costs before you make a nonrefundable commitment. New York is complicated with its 3 airports and 3 cruiseports,

Triumph and looking at June 2019.
Hotel we don't want to over spend, but know we are in the 250+ range.
We didn't have any specific plans for pre cruise sight seeing. I think we would make do with plans based on where we end up with a hotel.

Getting to the cruise... into and out of NY with the least amount of worries is #1.

Thanks

You are sailing from Manhattan. $250+ tax is reasonable for a hotel, but you need to make a refundable reservation as soon as you book the cruise. The La Quinta in midtown is in this range, but the rates vary depending on the day of the week.

Fly into LGA. Take a car service like Dial7 or Carmellimo to Manhattan. LGA is under construction and the rules for pickup seem to change constantly and currently involve taking a shuttle to the limo pickup area.

You could also fly into Newark where you can get limo pickup at the terminal. Price Dial7 or Carmellimo to see what it would cost. They will quote a base price. Expect to pay about $20 in tolls plus a 18-20% tip. From LGA tolls can be up to $8.50.

Post back for more detailed advice from our New York experts when you know your airline flight options and costs (be specific about the carrier) plus your car service quotes.

What you need now is advice as to how early you can consider booking a return flight.

Just a quick note about disembarkation @CCL and booking flight home - in general ... out of NY area airports. Please be very conservative and allow generous, extra time for clearing the ship, getting thru CBP, securing ground transportation to the airport of choice (it appeared all the dates are on a weekday !!!) - allowing a minimum of 60 to 90 minutes to get to the "best" airport, which isn't necessary the same as "easiest" or closest airport. I recommend booking flights no earlier than 1 PM ... 1:30 PM or 2 PM and later would be better.

CCL does have the option (upon payment of fees for a pass) for early disembarkation - assumed that OP is familar with her/his option.

Nevertheless, CCL does not sail out NYC on a year-round basis, unless NCL which we sail out of often & more familiar with their "routines" - which is just as inconsistent & unpredictable ... tides at the NY harbor & weather, etc. With the posted 8 AM arrival, assumed you will be off the ship, thru CBP & on 12th Ave for taxi/car service to airport no later than 10 AM - another hour + to the airport, 90+ minutes for check-in and TSA, and at least 30 to 60 minutes with early boarding before push-back from the gate for taxiing to departure.

So we are doing this in September. None of the airports are great, but depending where your located, and airline, this may restrict you. Southwest, for example, only fly's to LaGuardia and Newark. JFK and Newark are about equal distance from Times Square and the port, LaGuardia is closer but probably the worst of them.

We are staying 4 extra days, and as you probably know, NYC is expensive. At least in September, you won't find hotel rates much under $300/night after taxes and fees. We used Hotwire where you don't know the hotel name but do know the location and we probably save about $250 total.

From the airport to cruise port, I would take a shared shuttle. Maybe $23/person one way. You have to plan on 90 minutes. Cabs will be $75+ total, unless LaGuardia, maybe $50.

We were going to stay two extra days, but there is so much to do there, we added two more days. Note, if you do go in summer, it gets pretty hot.

Newark would be the easiest/closest airport. Just across the river.

No...LGA is about 12 miles from the cruise terminal by the shortest route versus about 18 miles for EWR, and it is far more expensive for a car service or taxi from EWR than from LGA. Given the construction at LGA, it may be "easiest" however.

No, Newark is neither the closest, nor easiest: it is across the river - but a good distance south; and involves often delay-inducing Lincoln tunnel or GW bridge and NJ Turnpike. La Guardia is closest - with perhaps $40-$45 taxi fare, then JFK and Newark with likely $50–$60 fare. Problem with LGA is ongoing construction, which makes delay possible.

Absolutely correct, when you ship is in the upper bay, past the Statue of Liberty to sail towards the Verrazano Narrow Bridge is about where Newark Airport is off to the west, you could even see the planes landing/taking off in the far distance.

NY Airports are best based on the price of the airfare plus the cost/time or value of your time of transportation from/to the NY airport, not physical distance.

I have always taken the NJ Transit train from Ewr to Manhattan Penn station. I would guess a cab from Pen station to the dock to be $15-20.
