Pisa/lucca

I think we are going to DIY and leisurely see Pisa and Lucca in a day. Is there a church to be seen that will require a certain dress code while in this area? Just want to be prepared.

Didn't see any signs but I typically wear long pants and shirts with short sleeves when I'm ashore so I probably wasn't paying attention too much attention.

Pisa has a church and a baptistery next to the tower. General courtesy is no bare shoulders or short shorts though I didn't see anyone turning people away. I didn't seen anyone handing out head covers either.

Head covers are not required and have not been commonly used in many years.

Covered knees and shoulders are a requirement. A short sleeve or cap sleeve will do.

There are churches to visit in both places if you so desire. I wear longer pants but if DW is off the shoulder she carries a lightweight shawl which can be put on for the visit as needed.

I am wondering what DIY method you are planning? Will you take the train or rent a car?

I don't think we have had to worry about dress code, but the last couple of times we have been has been spring and autumn so we were dressed appropriately to enter a church. The Vatican was the place where they were strict.

We went to Lucca by train. It was mega easy.

We were on NCL and they have a shuttle to the train station. I think not all ships do, and therefore a taxi, if you can find one, would be easier (but a shuttle to town still works - just find out how to get to Livorno train station from there.

The train to Lucca changes at Pisa. Go reasonably early and you will have time for both towns. You buy a ticket at the train station, there are self-serve machines (change the language to your preference) or there are real people to buy from.

It is best to get to Lucca first. The town is right opposite the train station. Enjoy the squares and the walls - don't expect a lot of wifi to catch up with your family. The only place we found was the San Luca Palace hotel.

On the way back to Pisa, we were on a local train (suspect they all are) and I noticed that the stop before Pisa Centrale was right beside the Tower - if you want to see that. If you are planning to go up the tower you need to book timed tickets ahead and plan more carefully.

As long as you are off the ship as early as possible there is time to get the train to Lucca, wander around for a couple of hours, get to Pisa see the monuments and catch the train back to Livorno. Easier if your ship has a shuttle directly to the station.

We took the ship's shuttle to Livorno's main plaza. We had booked transportation to Lucca and Pisa with TuscanyBus for $28eu round trip. The pick-up spot for TuscanyBus was at the same spot as the shuttle drop-off. We were escorted with commentary to Lucca on a motor coach with free Wi-Fi. We had 3 hours free time in Lucca and then proceeded to Pisa. We had a hour in Pisa before they took us back to the ship. The bus contained passengers from NCL and Princess. it cost a few dollars more than public transit but it was stress free and quite easy.

Friends of ours took the Florence/Pisa trip for $30eu but they started at 9:00 while we departed at 10:00.

I had stumbled upon the company in 2008 when the tourist information suggested taking them to Pisa for $15eu instead of trying to figure our way by public transportation.

Did you notice if anyone who didn't pre-book was able to get on this tour Lucca/Pisa by just walking up? We are not sure which one we want yet so thought we would wait until we get there.

There was at least one person that was a walk up. She was going to walk around Livorno but joined us. We arrived to the pickup point early so she managed to get on. The bus was full though.

I think it would depend on how many ships are in port. We were in port with the huge Royal Princess so Pisa and Livorno was crowded.

We stayed in Lucca for several days and enjoyed it very much. I would start here. Then catch the local train to Pisa. As per the OP, get off one stop prior to Pisa Central. You will know the stop because there will be lots of university folks getting off.

We only spent an hour or so in Pisa. Saw the tower, etc, and left. Not much else of note really.

We think that Lucca is a much bigger draw and more enjoyable.

Not an issue at all. They spoke English well.
