Ile de Pins has to be the prettiest port stop in the entire South Pacific.

Tip: While the beach side French hotel pavillion looks tantalizing for lunch, we had to walk out to the main road and down the long driveway to the hotel itself rather than just walk across the beach. There was a guard at the beach entrance who would not let you past if you were not a hotel guest, even if you said you were going for lunch. Lunch was in fact a bit disappointing after all, but the setting was wonderful. One has to realize anything they offered beyond basics would have to some in by ship, be pre-packaged and lose any fresh or "French" appeal. Chose menu items carefully. Same thing happened in Noumea at a very charming French bistro - everything was canned.
