The duct tape afficinados will tell you it is critical - you can patch up anything with it from rips in the suitcases to beach toys. Personally, I've never taken or needed it, but do have a few oddball things I DO find necessary - a "pop-up" laundry basket comes in handy as a hamper and as transport to the laundry room and back, and in a pinch, can double as a beach carryall and/or shopping "bag." Don't know if they have 'em down under, but here in the States, you get them at the discount dept. stores. They're like those windshield thingees but with net sides and handles. When not in use, you bend them back into a flat circle. Also don't go anywhere without a small first aid kit with bandaids, ace bandage, first aid cream, and on cruises take both ginger tabs and for rougher weather, dramamine. Also like to take a highlighter marker for the daily schedule and sticky notes in case I need to leave a note for DH or the cabin steward.

Reef shoes are a must in Lifou too. We all had ones from Big W and Quite a few pairs fell apart. It must have been a faulty batch in Canberra as I bought a new pair for daughter in QLD and had no probs. I have had my Big W ones for 4 years with no probs.

The underwater cameras are great but be careful if you buy them on the ship. If you get them from the kiosk it is $25 and doesn't include free processing. Only from the photo shop and if they offer it at the tender embarkation. The one I bought from the kiosk also wasn't reusable. I bought one from the photo shop on the Sun and it included processing worth $6.95 and it also had a flash. very cool.

Post it notes are handy for the keeping track for friends in other cabins. They also may appear on a scavenger hunt. I love my travel stretchy closthesline and one of those $2 shop round mini peg hanging thingy.

As someone else said water bottle. If you have one with a wide neck it is handy for fill with ice and then water. I did that every day and carried it with me.

I bought one of these specially for the cruise (not sure if it has handles though) cost me $5-00. Might even by another one yet. Don't even know what I'm going touse it for but thought it would come in handy for something. Dirty washing, shoes - who knows?

One thing I will probably bring is cordial to mix with water from the ship. Wouldbe much cheaper than buying soft drinks, we could easily rack up $30 a day in soft drinks alone otherwise. And water bottle to take on the beaches at the ports, unless the ship provides that.

yes the ship did provide clean cold water at the pier on the island stops. Plus drink were sold via cruisecard. They are not too expensive and they serve you.

karen instaed of taking a pop up hamper take one of those blue/red striped bags from the $2 shop. hang it near the front door (there are hooks) or in the bathroom. put all your dirty washing in it and then just zip it up and take it home like that straight to the laundry. Not so good if you are flying though

You can also use them for beach bags as we seemed to take a lot with us to the beach, snorkels, towels, camera video etc

Karon, yes I probably will take 1 or 2 of those bags as well but I thought the hamper might be good to chuck all our shoes in rather than have them spread around the cabin. When I get back I'll use at home as there are always shoes sread all over the place

We take Aqua-ear drops for after swimming...
Read on another packing tips thread that some people take one of those plastic slide under the door stoppers for privacy during the day in case the cabin steward pops in I guess they use this when taking a nap!

For those going on the Asia cruise, Sarah suggested toilet paper (or toilet wipes) as some places have "rustic" toilets. Nothing worse than being caught off guard.
