Sydney Itinerary Ideas

I thought CC readers who will be traveling to Sydney might be interested in my latest blog posts. My husband and I recently spent three fabulous days there before boarding a cruise that disembarked in Auckland. We did an all-day tour to the Hunter Valley (wineries & animal sanctuary; link is in blog) and toured on our own (city highlights and Bondi/Coogee Beach walk) before boarding the ship.

Jennifer, thank you so much! Sydney is a great walking city, and I'm glad the blog gave you some additional ideas. My next post will be on the Bondi/Coogee Beach Walk – another wonderful experience in that equally wonderful city. Happy travels!

The Sunshine Girl, thank you! Bondi Beach will be on the blog on Monday.

GUT2407, The animal sanctuary is called Walkabout Wildlife Park. Here's a link to their website: http://www.walkaboutpark.com.au/.

Lovedale sounds really interesting, as well. We were fortunate to see wallabies in the wild on Philip Island, our stop after Sydney...a real thrill!

Thanks I’ll need to follow up on that one.

My wife is, at times, late to work as she will stop to watch wildlife, she works at Cessnock.

GUT2407, That's a pretty great reason to be late to work :)

jdvmd, Yes, I will definitely be sharing stories & photos from Auckland! It was our final port, so it will be at the end of this series of blog posts. We spent one day walking in the city and another on a terrific wine tour on Waiheke Island.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on Auckland. We are headed there on the 17th, arriving on the morning of the 19th. Also, plan on doing a wine tour on Waiheke Island and trying to decide which one now. What wineries did you visit? Did you DIY or book through a company?

Thanks, Linda

Or wobbly wombats or a family of ducks, we have discovered that black crows consider Echidna a delicacy

Linda, We had a fabulous wine tour with Phil Parker. It was a full-day tour by ferry from Auckland and then a small van on Waiheke. Phil does all the tours himself and is quite a wine expert. We loved that it was a small group – just one other couple was on our tour. We visited three wineries – Mudbrick, Peacock Sky and Kennedy Point – and had an outstanding lunch at Mudbrick, which was included. It's a gorgeous setting, which made the day even more special. Here's the link: https://www.insidertouring.co.nz/

Auckland is quite spread out and not the most ideal walking city. That said, my husband and I spent a full day exploring on foot! The harbor area is lovely, and so are the Wintergardens in Auckland Domain. If you're tight on time, it might be worthwhile to do a small group city highlights tour or the HopOn/Off bus.

It's such a wonderful part of the world...Happy Planning!

FWIW, we've just come back from an NZ trip that included a couple of days on Waiheke. We managed two lunches at wineries:-

  1. Peacock Sky, which did a great lunch but where the wines weren't that great, and which also provided a winery tour, including a bit of a nature walk, but I'm not sure whether that was specially arranged for our group because of our size (about 17); and
  2. Man O' War which did platters rather than cooked meals but which had some really wines, which is in a really lovely setting right away from the built-up parts of the island (which I have to say were really rather disappointing, given Waiheke's reputation), and which I'd happily go back to next time.

Great information, we arrive in Sydney on April 6. I am doing the bridge climb that night, then we also do Blue Mountains one day and Hunter Valley another day. Sunset dinner cruise the night before our cruise so we are pretty loaded up. Thanks again for your info!

Sounds like you will need your cruise to recover.

Mary - I realized your blog had lots of other great info on it, and have just enjoyed your trips to New Zealand (where we are going along with Australia in November) and , Spain, Portugal & France as well, as we are going there next year. Your writing is fantastic and your pictures are wonderful, and you have the greatest smile! Just wanted you to know how appreciated your info is.
