Smoking in cabins

Hi all,

I posted this on general forum, but may be better here.

I am looking to book my first cruise with HAL. i understand you can smoke in all cabins.

My only concern is whether smoking in an inside stateroom would be bad, due to poor ventilation etc?

Not sure I can afford a balcony room.

I just know what my room is like if i smoke with no window open.

Can anyone tell me from experience if this is a problem with cabins on board?

Thanks for any help..

Hi James!

Be prepared to be blasted by the anti-smoking folks! I will say that as a smoker, I don't smoke in my cabin -- it gets really nasty -- no air circulation. I would recommend looking for an inside cabin that is near one of the designated smoking areas. Which ship are you on? I am sure someone can tell you where the specific smoking areas are.

Balcony doors are not to be kept open anyway, so smoking in an inside cabin would really be no different than in a balcony one. :)

True, but you have a balcony -- so you don't have to smoke in the room. Oh gosh -- this is gonna become one of those threads!

Let's hope that someone can tell the OP WHERE the designated smoking areas are on his ship prior to this thread combusting and getting pulled.

I have only sailed on the Oosterdam and know that the bar near the casino was designated smoking, the casino itself (except for a couple nites -- usually formal nites) and several aft designated outdoor areas.

This doesn't have to turn nasty. How about just posts regarding where it's allowed?

Here. I'll get this out of the way:

Smoking is bad.

Clean air is good.

Some people smoke.

Some people don't.

Some tolerate it.

Some don't.

Holland America allows it.

Some want that changed.

Write or call Holland America and voice your anger or frustration there.

Now, hopefully, just posts that answer the OP's question?:)

Smoking is allowed in the Casino/Sports Bar, outside of the Crow's Nest (Observation Deck), Sea View (Aft) Lido Pool Area (the same side as the Bar only) and wherever you see a metallic thingy hanging on the Promenade deck. It will look like the attached thumbnail). These are the only places in the Public areas that I KNOW we can smoke in.

That is great Joanie thank you for that and the picture :)

I really don't like idea of smoking in my room if not well ventilated. So will have to just get to one of the smoking area's.

Of course would love to be able to afford a balcony but just too much as I am going on my own.

Not sure if I want to do a random room share.

This is quite easy to find on the HAL website:

Is Smoking Allowed On Board?

For the comfort of all of our guests, all indoor areas are designated non-smoking with the exception of:

  • Casino
  • Northern Lights Disco (ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdamms Zuiderdam only) &
  • Outside Decks
  • Seaview Bar (except ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam & ms Statendam)
  • Sports Bar
  • Crow's Nest (except ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdamms Zuiderdam) &

Our ships do not have "nonsmoking" staterooms; however, all rooms are thoroughly cleaned after each cruise to assure the comfort of our guests. All showrooms are nonsmoking during performances.

Cigar and pipesmoking is permitted on the outside decks only.

Like many things on the Official HAL Web Site some info is out dated such as the smoking policy for the following that I know personally about.

You cannot smoke on all Outside decks. For instance, the Aft Promenade, the Forward Promenade and where there are signs with the International sign for no smoking.

I also believe I saw No Smoking signs on the Observation Deck both forward and aft sections, but am not positive.

I've been on Westerdam, Oosterdam and Nieuw Amsterdam and none of the Bars/Lounges/Night Clubs have there been any smoking allowed, other than the Sports/Casino Bar.

Also on the Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam there is no smoking allowed in the "Retreat Cabanas area" except for 1 ash tray as you come out of the Crow's Nest.

People who take the ashtrays to a non smoking area should have it pointed out to them, by crew or fellow passengers the correct side of the Sea View (Aft) Lido area. I've done it myself to fellow smokers.

I've been looking for a smoker friendly thread to post this question on... I smoke a tobacco pipe frequently in lieu of cigarettes, which I gave up about 6 months ago... I love smoking my tobacco pipe... I don't think it's safer than cigarettes, but I enjoy it more and inhale it less...MY problem is that I recently read on the HAL website that pipe smoking and cigar smoking are allowed only on the outside decks... Does anyone know, does that mean I can't smoke my tobacco pipe in the casino? What about in my state room? Do I need to switch back to cigarettes for my week of cruising? If so, how many packs of cigarettes is one allowed to bring aboard? And for that matter, how much pipe tobacco is one allowed to bring aboard, or is there a limit for something such as that?

That's correct - pipes and cigars are not allowed in the casino or inside your cabin. (Don't ask me why!)

No limit on how much tobacco in any form you bring aboard.

Thank you so much... looks like I'm gonna be a cigarette smoker again for a week... I did get a room with a balcony... any chance I'm allowed to smoke my pipe out there?

I thought that smoking was only permitted on only one side of the Promenade/Lower Promenade Deck ("Outdoor Walkaround")! I guess that it really is a non issue since the "metallic thingy" is only hanging on a bar & can be easily relocated by the smokers to whatever side on which they so choose to smoke! ;)

Not true. The Ashtray that is hanging is secured by bolts and cannot be removed except with the proper tools.

No worries for you:)

We do not smoke. While we have NEVER encountered a HAL cabin that smelled of smoke, this is always in the back of our minds. It is one of the things that is pushing us a little to Celebrity.

We have never actually had any issues with smokers on HAL-and never on our verandah. There is only one tweek that we would like HAL to make to their smoking policy-no smoking in the staterooms (Ok on veradahs from our perspective). It would have to be followed up with an enforced policy (as in most hotel chains) of a $250. cleaning charge for those who violate the rule.

I would have no problem with that -- as a smoker -- I don't smoke in my house, in hotel rooms or in a cruise stateroom.
