Marella Discovery dress to impress night

Recommended Posts

Hi first time cruiser here. im wanting to know a little more about the 'dress to impress" night on the Marella Discovery. Our family of 4 intend to dress as we would for an evening meal out at a nice restaurant, however, didn't want to feel underdressed if its dinner jackets and dresses.

What are others experience of the dress to impress night? Is it a mixture of smart/casual or does everyone tend to really dress up?

Also what else tends to be planned on that night? Photos with captain? Special entertainment etc....

Thanks

I've never been on discovery, but was on discovery 2 last year. The dress to impress night was a mixture, about a third in dinner jackets and gowns, most others in nice dresses and trousers or suits, others more smart casual. Don't worry about being over or under dressed. Just dress how you feel most comfortable. Hope that helps.

Dress to Impress night is disappointing compared with the formal Captains nights on the smaller Marella ships. No special meal or entertainment and just a short speech by the Captain in the Atrium when he introduces a few of his senior officers.

On the 2 cruises we did on Discovery 2 last year most people - especially the ladies most of whom wore long dresses or cocktail dresses - dressed up but only around a third of the men wore DJs (although my hubby did and will be doing again next month on Discovery).

To make the evening a little more 'special' we book a table in one of the speciallity restaurants that night.

Thanks for your quick replies. Definately a big help. Good advice 'First Cruise Lady' to not worry and dress how we feel comfortable. And Campolady we will certainly think of doing something a little 'more special' on that night. Thanks again

This "dress to impress" night is trying to not scare off the younger/newer cruisers that a "Formal or Gala Night" might do. So Marella isn't putting a restriction on what to wear but is trying to encourage the formal wear where possible but if gentlemen are only in a jacket and shirt instead of a full tux, then it is fine and not frowned upon.

Most people still dress up for the glamour of a cruise and treat it as a gala night anyway. I have seen more younger/newer cruisers embrace this dressing up night and have fun with it.

But if you want to wear just a dress and not a cocktail one, then fine. If you forgot to pack your best dress, then no panic, wear what you did bring.

Men don't even need a jacket, a nice shirt and trousers will do

From the Marella site

The onboard dress code is smart-casual, however our gala evenings onboard Marella Spirit, Marella Dream and Marella Celebration are all about getting suited and booted. Men don their tuxes or suit and ties, while ladies put on their best cocktail dresses. On Marella Discovery, Marella Discovery 2, Marella Explorer and Marella Explorer 2, our Dress to Impress nights are also a great chance to get dressed up, but how dressy you go is completely up to you.

From the 2019 brochure

If you are on board Marella Discovery, Marella Discovery 2, Marella Explorer or Marella Explorer 2, you can swop long trousers for smart, tailored shorts. If you want to add a jacket or tie that's up to you
