2018 World Cruise Blogs

A world cruise is on my bucket list, although it's probably not going to happen for quite a few years yet. Still, not too early to start dreaming. I went back and read your first world cruise blog and enjoyed it very much. I'll definitely be following this one on Holland America! I've sort of narrowed my choice down to HAL or Princess, so really interested in reading about your HAL experience.

Of course my choice of cruise could change by the time I actually start planning in earnest. (Who knows who'll be doing world cruises in 6-8 years when I finally retire.) For now, I'm saving for a solo world cruise, and will enjoy "travelling along" with you.

I likely will never cruise on Princess simply because they routinely charge 200% for solo cruisers and HAL and Cunard do not.

Thanks for following along!

For now, I get a great casino rate for Princess, but doubt that applies to world cruises which is why HAL is on my list, but hard to do any real planning when I'm 6-8 years out, so keeping all options open.

A couple of things you can do while you are waiting is to watch the websites and check prices and perks. I have seen the cost of world cruises slashed a great deal in some years (of course, never in the year I want to go:rolleyes:). I know at least one couple who got a really good deal on Princess for the 2018 WV. On the other hand, the HAL 2018 GWV itinerary was different enough that a year ahead of the cruise it was sold out. Cabins for certain segments and in certain categories opened up as people cancelled but almost always at a higher price. My grade cabin increased (with the solo supplement) over $10,000.

Many cruise lines give their world cruisers some perks for booking early. On both my world cruises I booked very early (as soon as booking opened) and received free hotel charges (over $1000 for a full voyage). Also some travel agencies give nice perks.

Another thing you might do is check the itinerary that a cruise line does each year. How similar or different are they? Do they make a complete circumnavigation (that was very important to me)? (You might have guessed by now I like doing research.:D;):D).

Happy planning!

Scrapnana - was it ever decided whether OTC drugs could be shipped by FEDEX, and can we ship mouthwash which does contain a very amount of alcohol?

I did not put any OTC drugs in my FedEx bags. Everything electronic, drug, cosmetic related, etc. is going in the bag that will be checked on the plane (I may have to leave the clothes at home because that case will weigh a ton:eek:). My gut feeling is that ATF would not care about mouthwash but don't think I would take the chance.

I've already started a spreadsheet to gather pricing information over the next few years as well as other considerations (hints, tips, things to remember, etc.). Will be following you on your voyage and know I'll learn a lot from reading your posts, as well as posts from CC members in this forum. I too like doing research ;)--helps to keep the dream alive!

Good to know about the volcano. Lots were upset that Madagascar had to be cancelled and were not real sure about Reunion. I posted a link to your blog on our roll call so they can learn more about Reunion. Thanks, Roscoe!

I really enjoyed Le Port, hope you do too....just dont go swimming there! . I have friends who have been to Madagascar by cruise ship and were very disappointed, they said there was very little there and this was backed up by crew members I spoke to who had been there. I think the exoticness of the name outlive the actual experience.

Also the thought of the plague is slightly off-putting......

can't wait for your trip to start so we all can live vicariously through your blog, I have to wait till 2019 to do it again.

brest regards Roscoe
