Quick question. Cruising the Panama Canal the end of October. Going river rafting in Costa Rica and volcano in Nicaragua...should I get typhoid and hepatitis A vaccines? Thank you.

If you've never had the Hep A immunization it's a good thing to do but not needed for your cruise. We did 17 days from SF to FLL through the canal - included Nicaragua and Costa Rica - and no immunizations were needed. We got the Hep A shots (2 over a 6 month period) for visiting Tahiti but it was only "recommended" by CDC - not required. Most of the passengers on our cruise (I believe) don't bother getting the Hep A shots but they are something that is given automatically now during childhood vaccinations.

No to the typhoid but yes to the HepA. It is not required but is currently a routine childhood vaccination and a vaccine that everyone ought to get if they have not received it previously.

Don't forget to get the noro vaccine. You are most likely to get that.

Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date (every ten years) and seriously consider a flu shot. Hep A/B is something that wasn't available when the baby boomers were kids. We should all get those now.

If you are getting hep a, you might as well get the combo hep a/b

Your local hospital should have a travel center and will give you the recommended shots and vaccines for where you are going...

Don't forget to get the noro vaccine. You are most likely to get that.

There is no Noro Vaccine available. There is a Noro Vaccine in human trials, but will probably take years to be available.
