Excursion help - Belize, Mahogany Bay, Cozumel, Costa Maya

Recommended Posts

We're trying to figure out a good beach in Belize where the teens can play, snorkle and maybe slide or do trampolines. Starfish Island seems to only get so-so reviews. Any other beaches that we should look at? We can take a taxi if needed.

On the bright side, I was able to get a great deal through Chase for ziplining in Mahogany Bay. Less than $50/pp and includes transportation and beach time. It was advertised as $65/pp on Chase, but is less once you go to checkout and you can pay with points. Here is a review page for it in case anyone else is interested.

That leaves Cozumel & Costa Maya...

Save your snorkel and beach trip for Cozumel or Roatan, and forget about finding a beach in Belize. Just snorkeling in Belize, some fantastic spots on the reef and off Caye Caulker, but no beaches. Cozumel has Senor Pancho's,(best for families with kids) Paradise, and Nachi, all located on the same stretch of beach. You can combine zip lining and Tabayana Beach in Roatan as well, but you already know that.

Costa Maya has small but nearby Mayan ruins as well as the town of Marahuel, accessible on a short shuttle ride. The town has evolved from a lazy fisherman's village with dirt roads to a tourist friendly site. IMO, Marahuel is better than the immediate port area which has numerous vendors and a pool, as well as one of the chain restaurants.

No beach can reasonably reached in Belize. If you want to snorkel there, take the snorkel that then goes to Starfish Island, but be aware that the beach there is not very good.

In Belize, I'd recommend the cave tubing trip--it was really fun. Sometimes it is combined with ziplining, or other things, but you are already booked for a zip. There are really no beaches on the mainland at any near distance and a long boat ride out to the Cayes.
