Smokers

How do you deal with smokers on neighboring balconies when they seem to ignore the rules? Also, do aft wraps and extended balconies have as much of an issue with blowing smoke? Thanks, in advance.

Treat them the way I'd want to be treated. I'd hope no one called the cops every time I broke a rule.

I suppose you could ask them nicely to not smoke there, point out the "rules" because they might have "forgotten" them.

If that doesn't work, report them to the room steward or Guest Services. Maybe see if you can video them actively smoking with your phone (make it look like you are just videoing the whole area, gotta be subtle), then show it to the appropriate folks.

I dunno, most smokers I know are pretty good about going to proper smoking areas and respecting other that ask then to stop smoking near them, but there always seems to be some folks that just don't want to be nice, and it is almost like they are provoking...

You can try to talk to them and see if they will refrain while you are on the balcony. If that doesn't work then a call to security might be in order. DW has asthma that is exacerbated by cigarette smoke so if it was a frequent occurrence we'd have to say something.

I know what you mean. Right? They are causing you a discomfort, so what you are saying, that you would break the rules, and expect forgiveness, even though you are annoying them. If I was smoking where I wasn't I would expect someone to report me.

If you smoke, and it bothers me, I will report it without hesitation. Some people feel that rules aren't for them.

Cross that bridge IF you come to it. We've never been bothered by smoke on our balconies, even when it was allowed!

Just curious...where are you permitted to smoke...I know the casino but is there like a certain side of the ship that smoking is allowed etc?

Husband has asthma. I'd call security. Unfortunately, people can be just mean, especially now a days, so I wouldn't bother speaking with him or her directly. They know what they are doing is wrong and they don't care.

On most ships there is a section on the deck above the lido/Pool deck. Most have sections on one side above the pool area . Some have sections at the back of ship on same deck....Ships with a promenade deck (usually deck 5) have a section on one side of ship closest to front.

Had a smoker next to me once. Took a picture and said I would report it if smelled again. Problem solved

As long as it don't bother us (which it doesn't) and they seem responsible... Let them enjoy it.

I agree with this... I want to be held accountable especially because I take the proper steps to do the right thing. Some people should be reminded that they are bothering others and if I am bothering someone by breaking a rule, I definitely want to know so I can stop. I have a conscious and I have empathy for others so if I am bothering someone, please let me know or contact who you need to. Its not intentional and I will personally apologize to you. I respect you... thats why!

To avoid confrontation, I would just call guest services. People can be nasty if confronted. I can't breath with cig smoke around me. The smoker does not need to know who reported them.

If I'm paying that much more money for a balcony cabin, I want to enjoy my balcony without breathing in cigarettes/cigar/whatever smoke. Too many people think the rules apply to everyone but them, and yet others assume that if no is complaining then it's not bothering anyone (not true, some people are just not comfortable confronting an offender). I'd probably call guest services.

My first and only cruise so far was on Celebrity and had a balcony and sure enough the cabin below had a smoker and it seemed every time I walked out they were or just finished smoking. I didn't know what to do, so I just came in. That left a bad taste so to speak as I quit 35 years ago.

You're lucky your phone or camera didn't end up on the bottom of the sea.

I don't see anything wrong with recording the offense and/or contacting security. Whatever method that gets the cruise line to enforce their rules & fines and helps them quickly resolve the issue, works for me. My family's health comes first.

Report them without hesitation for safety reasons. Fire onboard a ship is extremely dangerous and the designated areas are positioned to mitigate this risk.

Thank you for mentioning this...I didn't think of it but I agree that safety is another very good reason to report him or her.

As a smoker, I was disgusted when cruise lines stopped allowing smoking on balconies. You're outside for heaven's sake. With that said, I abide by the rules and do not smoke on our balconies and smoke only in designated areas on the ships. I would definitely call Security or guest services if I smelled cigarette smoke - why should someone get away with it when I abide by the rules. I would not confront the person doing it, but would just make the call.

Yes. This is so true.

It happened to us the first time we had a balcony. I reported them to guest services on two separate occasions. They stopped after that. The smell of smoke makes me physically ill, so I won't tolerate it.
