Just checked our ship's Caribbean Culture schedule and realized that unfortunately, there is not much time at all in Dominican Republic. We have booked the paper activity on Thursday morning, the Dominican Fiesta Thursday evening starting at 7pm and the chocolate activity on Friday morning. This will only give us Thursday afternoon to enjoy the pool at Amber Cove.

I see that the Fathom's and Shorex' excursions do not show anything for Wednesday evening when we arrive at 7pm. Wondering if most people just stay on the ship Wednesday night? Anything else happening poolside or around Amber Cove?

Also, what type of activities are held on the numerous sea days?

I'd really like to see some of Puerta Plata, but don't want to give up the 2 impact activities or the Dominican Fiesta that we have planned to do so.Can we see any of town, cable car, shop, etc., enroute to or from the paper activity or from Dominican Fiesta trip?

Thanks so much for any input.

You are right - the Caribbean Cultures trip is very rushed, and seems to cram a lot of stuff into a couple of shore days. On our sailing (Mar12) they had a youth drumming group and some carnival dancers provide a presentation poolside on the Wednesday night. As well, I think there was a band playing poolside, but we wandered around and then went back to the ship after the shows, because we had an early day on Thursday. We did the water filters on Thursday, and were too tired to do much of anything else Thursday night. Friday was English at a school, and then a mad dash back to the ship, as it was leaving port an hour earlier than originally scheduled. I don't know that you will see much on the way to the Fiesta as it will be getting dark by then. We did see quite a bit on the way to our impact activities - but from the window of the bus. There isn't much time to do anything else. As far as the sea days - we went to some of the presentations, read our books, and enjoyed relaxing a bit. We did not feel bored, or lacking in stuff to do. We found many of the other passengers to be super interesting, much more so than any other cruise. There is value in just getting to meet so many unique and wonderful individuals, at dinners, during group activities, and just hanging out.

Be sure to go to the group activities onboard. The history & Spanish classes were very helpful. Tons of great information & interesting fellow travelers. We also enjoyed the wine & rum tastings. Our sailing could not dock the first evening due to high winds but there was a dinner planned at Amber Cove. If you haven't made plans for Santiago, we had a great private tour with Yuri from www.cubaguider.com. spent the day touring in a 54 Oldsmobile. Yuri planned the day to our interests & made sure we had a good understanding what we were seeing. Very reliable & great English. Enjoy
