Age Group Activities

Recommended Posts

We will be traveling with our children....23, 18, 17. I noticed that most of the activities are age grouped. Will our children not be able to enjoy the same activities?

the 17 yo can be in the teen program...the others are on their own...I see your second post to cruise critic welcome...RCI does have some "meetings/get together" scheduled for 18yo..23 not sure

Sorry to break it to you but your 18 and 23 year olds are not children, they are adults.

The 23 year old can do everything you are doing and the 18 can do almost everything except drink and gamble.

The 17 year old can participate in the club.

I know the 18 and 23 are adults but the 18 and the 17 year old are only separated by 3 weeks in age. According to what I have seen, they can't even hang out in the same locations.....hanging with 15 year olds without his friends isn't real exciting at the moment .

Well, I suppose they will have to make a choice. The older two are going to be on their own. The youngest can go into the club for his age, and although there will be younger kids there, it might be fun for him. Alternatively, they can all just do their own thing, can't they? The two younger ones can hang together, just not in the nightclub or casino. The older one can do whatever he wants - drink, gamble, etc. :)

Having said all that, you can see why an 18 year old would not be allowed into the club with your 17 year old (which has 15 year old girls in it). Right? Makes sense. They have to err on the side of caution and have the age cut off somewhere.

Sounds like they might just want to do their own thing anyway. What ship will you be on? (EDITED - sorry, I see it is Freedom. All their spare time will be spent at the Flow Rider and Sorrento's pizza!! LOL :D )

There are plenty of places your kids can hang out together and plenty of all ages activities they can do together if they want. I don'T think DS17 even went into the teen club once on either of the last to cruises--but he was always busy.

16 and up can use the gym and the adult pool/deck--so all can go together to any of those as ell as the main pool, rock climbing mini golf, flo rider, etc and there are always several lounges open to all ages throughout the day to sit and chat or play cards, etc

Activities like most stage shows and live music events, trivia, games run by cruise staff, etc are mostly all ages as well.

My kids are year apart in age so the last 3 cruises one has been over 18 and one not---they still spend most of the eek together and still have a blast.

I think poster above has the best take.

IMHO Royal miss a trick with the 18-21 age group though I guess the vast majority will be travelling with family groups which will have their own dynamics.

I have heard of some flexibility to accommodate siblings in the younger age groups programs but never in the teens. There maybe a meeting for 18-21 yrs but the only first hand experience (that is, DS and friend) was very disappointing don't think anyone else turned up:o

I want to apologize for the huge number of mistakes above--in addition to my terrible typing skills, my keyboard is being fitful and some letters are not working well and w not at all--I am pasting it in, but sometimes forget as I type

the 18 and 23 yo will not be allowed into any kid's club programming at all and may enjoy any/all other adult or family activities.

the 17 yo is eligible for the teen club but not any of the Adult activities( mostly the R rated comedy show, any lounge that goes 18+ after certain hour) but is eligible to participate in any family activities.

this is an issue on all mainstream lines. the 18-20 demographic is in limbo: can't drink, but can do pretty much everything else but they do not go out of their way to coordinate activities that appeal to this age group. it's either family friendly/ all ages, or nothing. at best one of the Trivia sessions might appeal to their interests.

Thanks for all of the input...sounds like they will just find their own things rather than organized though the 17+ will be confined to his cabin at 1:00. FTR, I wasn't implying that the 18 and 23 be allowed into the kids club but rather was hoping that the kid 17+ could travel with 18.

The 17 and 18 year olds can hang out together just about anywhere (pool, sports deck, arcade, etc.), just not in the teen club, and at certain lounges that are considered 18+ after 10pm or so.

not true at all. while the 18 yo is banned from the kid's club/teen hangout area and the 17 yo is banned from the casino the ENTIRE REST OF THE SHIP is open to both of them of most of the day. after 10 pm, one or two lounges will go 18 or 21 and up only. hell not even the enforced curfew will be an issue if the 17yo is in the company of either sibling after 1 am.

hardly 'nowhere to hang out together'

The 17 year old isn't confined to his cabin at 1 am. There are youth club activities until 2 am that he can participate in. Otherwise if he is out and about after 1 am he must be with a parent.

actually either of the elder siblings would also be acceptable. they just have to be in the company of an adult.

I am not so certain about that. DS17 was with our 28 year old friend, whom he shared a cabin with, as well as to others in that upper twenties age range, chatting near park cafe on Splendour and security checked all their IDs and said DS had to return to the room since it as past 1:00 and he as under 18. Our friend explained that they were travelling together and booked in the same room, but they were told it did not matter and that even if us parents had been there he would have to return to the room.

It honestly never occurred to any of us that it would be an issue if he was out with the adults in our travel party. Luckily he is not normally a late night kid and they had all just lost track of time that night, so it has not been a big deal to him.

Actually: your 18 year old can go ANYWHERE the 23 year old can. This includes the casino (and yes, they ARE allowed to gamble), and the night club (BUT they can't purchase alcohol).

The 17 year old can go anywhere with them besides these 2 places. And as long as they're behaving well, security should also be fairly "nice" (but this will also depend entirely on the ship and the security).

I wouldn't worry though - they'll have fun together! The 17 year old can go and see what the teen club scenario is like, and if they don't like it they don't have to go back and can spend time with the 18 and 23 year old.

That doesn't sound like their normal curfew rules, but such things can be up to the discretion of the ship's captain. Normally, it only applies to children who are not accompanied by an adult.

  • 2 months later...
It's possible it has changed since then, but our son was 19 when we sailed RCCL and he was allowed to gamble, won several hundred dollars playing Cards.

Royal allows age 18 and over to gamble on their ships, except when doing an Alaska itinerary.

On RCCL cruises in and out of Europe ( but not TA ) 18 plus can drink. It was one of the reasons we chose RCCL over Carnival this time for my 19 yo son.

Also I noted 18-20 meets organised - maybe those will be attended and the full sports court will be somewhere for him to hang out and meet similar aged buddies.

We had a nightmare last year on Carnival out of Miami. The demographics on the boat were different ( I think now it was a theme cruise ) and almost everyone of that demographic kept to themselves - so he was totally bored as no sport court and no alcohol.
