I am a full time wheelchair user and was wondering if anyone knows if Hawaii has wheelchair taxis available? Also if any of the shuttle buses from port to shopping areas have lifts? Thank you!

I was there 10 years ago, and we rented a full-sized van for the time we were there. It was expensive, 100 dollars a day or something like that, but it sure was nice to be able to get in it and go whenever and wherever we wanted. I don't remember the name of the place, but it shouldn't be hard to find on Google.

Which ports in Hawaii??

The shuttle from the pier to the town in Hilo has seating for one wheelchair at a time. If you are going to be there, go to the Visitor's Center on the pier as soon as you disembark, and they will get you onto the shuttle. It was $3 each way the last time we did this. We also were able to get a lift equipped bus for a tour from here to Volcano National Park (through the cruise line) twice.

In Honolulu, the shopping shuttles are not accessible, but The Bus (city bus) is. Walk over to King Street and you can get an accessible bus all the way to Waikiki and back.

On Kauai, we were also able to get a lift equipped bus tour to Waimea canyon. Most of the view points here are accessible.

Lahaina is a tender port, so unlikely you will be able to go ashore there unless you can walk on and off the tender under your own power.

We also rented a ramp van once in Honolulu, and drove all the way around the island, but it is VERY expensive. If you have 4 or more passengers it may be cheaper than the cruise ship tours though. There are accessible buses to the Polynesian Cultural Center if you plan to do that.

If you can transfer to a car, and have a manual folding wheelchair, you may want to consider rental cars as well. We have done this in Hilo, Nawiliwili (Kauai), Kona, Lahaina, and Honolulu in the past.
