We're looking at hotels for both ends of the South America cruise. Just wondering where others stayed, which neighborhood, what is it close to & did you like it? I really appreciate any information you can give me!!

We stayed at the Marriott Renaissance in Santiago. On paper, it seemed to be a little distant from the "action" and the downtown area. Since we had hired a guide to show us around, that didn't really matter to us. Turned out to be a great decision. We were able to walk through beautiful leafy residential areas to a couple of great restaurants. There's also a big mall just a 10 minute walk away. Rooms were beautiful and quiet, and service was excellent, especially the concierge. We had a spectacular view of the Andes and enjoyed the lovely outdoor area with bar service and live music. The Executive lounge had very decent wine on offer (better than we have had in other Marriotts). For our money, it was a perfect 10 and we would stay there again.

In BsAs, we chose the Alvear Art. Again, our room was beautiful and quiet. It was located right on the border of Recoleta and the (sorry I forget what they call it) area leading to downtown. We thought it perfect. Easy to walk to either area. We never taxied to any restaurant and had some awesome food for two days and two nights. The hotel is very new, so everything is pretty much pristine and the neighborhood (left out the front door) is residential and leafy. However, there is no outdoor area, which I like to have when visiting a place with a totally inverse climate to the one I'm coming from.

I was in and out of BA 3 times in February before a cruise. I first stayed at La Perla, a lovely bed and breakfast near Plaza de Mayo (http://www.bedandbreakfastbuenosaires.com/). I next stayed at Argenta Tower Hotel & Suites in Retiro during my OAT land tour (http://www.argenta-tower.com.ar/). Finally, my husband and I stayed in an apartment just down the block from Recoleta Cemetery through Airbnb (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/2959839?checkin=02%2F24%2F2017&checkout=02%2F27%2F2017&guests=2&s=scmRGz2-). All 3 were great!

I used to travel to BA regularly before retirement. I have stayed in a wide range of hotels and apartments in various parts of the city. My one post-cruise stay was in the Alvear Art Hotel, mentioned earlier in this thread. I agree with the poster's assessment. It's a beautiful hotel, not far from Plaza San Martin, the Florida pedestrian street, and the Galerias Pacifico Mall (worth a trip for the architecture and the mural on the ceiling...it was formerly the Headquarters of the railroad in Argentina). It is also within easy walking distance of the Plaza del Mayo and Casa Rosada (Argentina's White House..only Pink....see Evita for an idea of the masses that gathered in the plaza to listen to her speeches from the balcony of the Casa Rosada), the Obelisco on 9 del Julio) and Recoleta with its toney neighborhoods and world famous cemetery(where Evita and most of Argentina's rich and famous are buried).

I actually prefer to stay in Recoleta for a hotel stay and in Palermo for longer stays but the Alvear Art made staying in Retiro/downtown worth the stay. If you opt of Recoleta, there are hotels in virtually every price range. The Sileo is a good solid middle of the price range pick.

Palermo Soho (a part of Palermo) is a trendy part of town, but its not as central as either downtown or Recoleta. My least favorite neighborhood is Puerto Madero, BA's newest neighborhood...it lacks the neighborhood feel of most of BA's areas...too new to have a developed infrastructure, I suppose.

If you want an authentic Buenos Aires apartment check out the B&B that we stayed in in BA. It would be great for a family, with sleeping for up to five.

In Santiago, we stayed in two different hotels furnished by SouthExcursions. Both were good.

We're staying at IBIS in Santiago. Not the best area of town, but the hotel is clean, cheap, near a metro station, and you can ride a bus to or from the airport for next to nothing. It's also right next to the bus terminal for buses to and from Valparaiso.

we have only been to Santiago once. We stayed in a smaller boutique hotel in Bellavista, the Castillo Rojo. Great little hotel but no elevators. They will take your luggage up, but you have to be able to navigate one or two flights of stairs on your own. Bella Vista was a perfect location. Tons of restaurants and shops nearby. We took a tram to the top of a hill overlooking Santiago. The tram was within walking distance and the view was incredible. The hotel itself was a little pricey. There are probably better cost-effective options but we had a very nice stay.

Hi Joy, in BA, we stayed at the Novotel. Not luxury, but very nice rooms, lobby, dining room. It was next door to an excellent pizza place. It was within easy walking distance of the Obelisk.

In Santiago we just went from the ship to the airport on a tour/transfer from Micheal the German Pirate. He also does tours for people staying in Santiago and Vina del Mar by the way. When we thought we were staying the night, we had booked a room at the Hostal Morgan, which looked very nice.

We stayed at IcaroSuites Suites in BA. Great stay....large rooms, excellent location..spotless. Big plus was the laundry room. We travel light so it gave us an easy chicle to catch up.

In Valparaiso we stayed at Ibis. Typical Ibis. Convenient location.

In Santiago we stayed at Ibis Estacion Central. Big reason was that it was beside the bus station and the subway. We took a Turbius from Valparaiso to Santiago. Two days later we took the Turbus to the airport to pick up a rental car. Typical Ibis. Basic, clean, good value. Not a four star but we are travelling for several months at a time so our preferences and budget may be different.

Hi, I was in Santiago last fall and took the Valparaiso to Buenos Aires cruise with Holland America. I stayed two nights at the Sheraton Santiago. It was near all the shopping malls and it was the hotel the cruise company put me in. However, there were no shops or other facilities around the hotel. It was a beautiful hotel with excellent food. The pool area was beautiful--outdoor bar and restaurant, and a place to really relax and enjoy. The rooms were well appointed, clean, and comfy beds. There is a hop on-hop off bus stop right in front of the hotel. In the lobby there was a tour company set up that sold the tickets for the bus, as well as other city tours. Holland America also had its table. In Buenos Aires, there was a Sheraton right near the docks and the train station and again, used quite a bit by the cruise ship lines. This Sheraton had a lot of shopping around it and I heard an excellent restaurant next door. Hope this helps!
