Getting the train to and from Southampton for our cruise, travelling down the day before but need to know a suitable time for the return journey as I am buying advance tickets, any help or advice appreciated.

We always risk buying advance tickets for a train about 9 30 but we always make sure we self disembark if we choose this option. There is always the possibility that the ship may dock late (and horror of horrors we have to buy another very expensive ticket!!)but so far we have been lucky. If we weren t self disembarking we would probably book tickets for 11am or noon

I would book tickets for 1100 or slightly later and request a late disembarkation, which is then usually around 10.00.

We usually book for the 9.15 north train, but we've always self disembarked and so far always made the 8.15 north instead.
