Alcohol in the Emirates (pre-cruise, cruise/ports of call/ post-cruise)

Don't be distracted by the recent story in the news. That woman was detained because she arrived without a visa and filmed an immigration officer, not because she drank some wine on the plane.

Hotel bars and higher-end restaurants in Dubai sell alcohol by the drink. You can't buy alcohol in stores; it is only sold at the duty free at the airport. The rule of thumb is to behave the same way you'd behave at home: don't get absolutely bombed or pass out in public, and you will be fine.

If you see post #19 on the other thread you will see guidance for British visitors (the same applies to all non-muslim tourists) as issued by the FCO quoted there... The recent incident was sensationalized by the UK tabloid press and drinking a glass of wine on an incoming flight was incidental to the actual issues...

You may not want to drink alcohol if in the Emirates as it is incredibly expensive (about £12 for a pint if I remember correctly). Sometimes you just need some time free of alcohol though.

Duty free limits for bringing alcohol into the UAE are very generous, with some differences between the Emirates.

Buy stuff at home and pack them in your suitcase or buy at arrival duty free shops.

It is not true that you cannot buy alcohol outside hotels.

There are several liquor shops in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and any expat will know where they are. It's just that they are not allowed to advertise or use big signes.

Some shops are better than others, and the local Spinney's Liquor shop near my house has a better whiskey and gin selection than many a shop in Sydney. For a hefty price, of course.

As local residents we would theoretically need a government alcohol permit, but in reality I was never asked to show it.

As for drinking in bars and hotels, most do have long Happy Hours, two for one deals, all night free drinks for ladies, etc etc.

Generally ladies drink cheaper or - quite often- for free, whereas guys have to pay (outside happy hour). We call it "penis tax".
