Exchanging money

First time cruising...should I exchange any money for the ports we are visiting?

Depends...what are your ports? And where are you from?

If you're American, and visiting the Caribbean, they take USD just fine! If you're going to Europe or Asia, or elsewhere....you'll have to get local currency.

We are American..Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Mexico.

Nope. They all accept American dollars.

What about Aruba, curacuoa, barbados , StLucia and St;John's Antigua

Yikes! That’s terrible. We cruise to those ports every year and have never needed anything other than American $$. Apparently your travel agent hasn’t been traveling [emoji4]

If on a tour away from the port area and do shopping, you might get your change in the local currency. If in doubt, ask if the change will be US currency.

That's why you do your own research when traveling.

We've cruised to all of those ports, some multiple times. We always used dollars. As said, it might be possible that you would get change in local currency, but not usually.

If at all possible, take small bills so you can minimize the amount of local money you might get back. But the vast majority of the caribbean islands take USD, you’ll be fine.

We drive into Mexico every other year so we had a lot of pesos. We took them on our western cruise to costa maya and we could hardly get a price in pesos! Everything was in Us$. Lol

And, depending on where you go and what you are buying, you may be able to just use a credit card.

I've been to all those islands and they all take US dollars.Smaller bills are helpful or use your credit card for a larger purchase. Enjoy your holiday! Pat

Some places or people won't want to take old-looking currency; they prefer new looking bills. But not sure that will be a problem in the islands listed.

We have had someone really look over a more used looking bill and ask if we had newer ones.

Aruba does have Aruban Florin (Guilders) and Curacao has Neth Antilles Guilders... but both are pegged to USD.

Official rate 1.78 guilders/1 US Dollar.

Street price 1.75.

Casino price 1.80.

The key is getting change on a purchase: HT69 is right.

In Aruba, getting US change is easy, esp. in tourist areas.

When I lived in Curacao, ten years ago now, change was almost always made in guilder.

You will be fine with USA currency.
